The pressure is on for Melbourne to win its match up this week against the Gold Coast Suns who, by virtue a combination of the AFL’s weird fixturing and a tropical non-cyclone named Alfred are one of five of the competition’s undefeated teams. Strangely enough, despite their impressive percentage of 277.6 they are only sixth on the ladder, their only game being a Round 1 virtual walkover against the West Coast Eagles in Perth which basically, was a training run against witches’ hats.

Melbourne itself performed that same Eagles role in the final quarter of last Sunday’s game against North Melbourne at Marvel Stadium when it capitulated to the speed and run of a young up and coming team which controlled the middle and was high on confidence against a team which ran out of puff and could do almost nothing right in those final thirty minutes.

The were some extenuating circumstances that have been discussed extensively but there will be no excuses this week. 

Despite evidence to the contrary from Hawthorn’s run into last year’s finals after a 0-5 start, a loss on Saturday to the Suns at home would be a disaster and unacceptable. A failure on the part of the coaching panel to address the forward line’s shortcomings against the Kangaroos would be unforgiveable and unacceptable. A show of team love that also involves fumbling, poor decision-making, and a lack of awareness about what your opponents are doing, whether in defence or in attack, would be a cop out and unacceptable. Taking the opposition for granted would also be unacceptable. Playing Jekyll and Hyde football from week to week would be an insult to us all and unacceptable.

The only thing that supporters would find acceptable is 100% effort and no excuses that should in any event, be kept “in house”.

The club should therefore be desperate to turn things around and gain some momentum before the return in the next round of quicker players like Kozzy Pickett and Caleb Windsor who were both sorely missed during last week’s final term rampage at Marvel Stadium. They face the Suns who are a strong side at the stoppages but were well and truly exposed in that department when they met at People First Stadium only seven or so months ago. This time around, the Demons have a handy pair to add to that mix – Clayton Oliver and Christian Petracca although the latter might also be needed to provide some forward power as well.

The redeeming feature for the club stemming from the fact that the Suns have only played one game in a non-pressure cooker environment is that they might be coming into the game a trifle underdone. That might also have been the determining factor in the Demons’ defeat at the hands of the Giants a fortnight ago when they lost to a last minute goal after seemingly having the game in hand for most of the last half. All eyes will be on skipper Max Gawn who has had to shoulder a great deal of unnecessary attention after the rare occurrence of lowering his colours for the first time in living memory in the final quarter last week (i.e. two less hit outs and fewer handballs than Xerri but still a decent effort in the circumstances). That isn’t likely to happen again but for heaven’s sake, let’s give him some decent support!

Melbourne has established a winning streak of 12 consecutive games against the Gold Coast Suns stretching back to April 2014 when they won by eight points at the MCG. In the interim, the teams have only played three games at that venue, the last time being in August 2018. If we were to rely on history, the Demons could already claim the victory but unfortunately, things don’t work that way.

However, I do know that in their last meeting at the Suns’ headquarters, they smashed the home team who were strongly favoured to win and therefore, I’m going for the underdogs to withstand the pressure of the past week and to win by 25 points.

A weakened Melbourne team, despondent after four defeats in a row, travelled north to a place where no team from out of the state had conquered the Suns during the season and despite the fact that they were on the nose form wise and many of their stars were out, the Demons were far too composed for a disjointed home side and won by nine goals with Jack Viney and Ed Langdon starring and the young tall key forwards finding some connection with the dominant midfielders who kept them well fed all game long.

      As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.

Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide.       There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

      Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact.
