Letter of the Week

This letter appears in today's print edition of the Herald Sun so for those who don't get the paper, here's my letter of the week written by Demon fan Sally Cordner to Mike Sheahan together with Sheahan's response:-

Proud old Dees

REGARDING your article at the weekend about the Melbourne Football Club and its lack of heart, lack of supporters and the question about "Where are the families of the '50s and the '60s"?

Well, in effect myself and my family are one of those from the '50s and '60s and we are well and truly still here.

We attend on a weekly basis, feel every loss, debrief after every game and are as loyal as we were when our grandfather, great uncle, fathers, uncles and cousin played.

The Cordner boys - Denis (my father), Donald, Ted and John produced 15 children, with David playing for the Dees in the '80s. I can honestly say that 10 of these offspring regularly attend games and the others when they can.

And by the way, very few of us ski.

Sally Cordner, email

MIKE SAYS: The day the Cordners abandon Melbourne is the day the footy club dies. Crowds this year suggest more Cordners needed. I NEVER crack snow jokes.

Good for you Sally!

I'm disapointed that Sally didn't mention the Dick Reynolds "Unless it's a tie story" that "the Don' always tells about the 1948 GF.

:P

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 2 Jacob van Rooyen

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
