David Neitz interviewed in the Melbourne Weekly Bayside

Featured Replies

Melbourne Weekly Bayside Newspaper has a special feature interview with Demon skipper David Neitz in this week's edition.

The interview was conducted by David Bonnici who asked whether Neitz ever dreamed that he would be up there with some of the game's greats. "Not really," he replied. "As a kid you just hope that you're good enough to get a game, but I can look back and say that I've been pretty happy with my career up until this stage."

Neita doesn't really compare himself with other Demon greats like Robbie Flower and Garry Lyon but "the thing about football and leadership is that you bring your own unique abilities, and failings, to the table, so you've got to do it in your own way."

The best thing about being skipper of the club has been "having to confront things about yourself that make you grow as a person and enable you to lead the team better," he said. Neitz is not sure whether he will remain in the captaincy role much longer and has every confidence in the younger up and coming members of the leadership group who will follow in his footsteps.

Neitz believes that the difference between this year and the past few when the club has made the finals only to be beaten is "a combination of belief and the spur of our recent disappointments," and adds that the team relies on an even contribution from all players.

Of the young guns likely to burst onto the scene, it's a case of "who knows? No one really predicted Clint Bartram last year." He hopes that players like Matthew Bate, Nathan Jones and Lynden Dunn can take the next step in 2007.

Having finished a PR degree, Neita is looking to do something in the communication/branding/leadership field after football.

Melbourne Bayside Weekly readers can also enter a competition to win a free MFC membership.

Thanks for posting that alpha.....

It is greatly appreciated, especially for those of us who have absolutely no chance of ever reading the piece.

And Neitz always seems to come across as a complete class act.

Neitz the nobleman!

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

  • PREGAME: St. Kilda

With just over two weeks until their opening match of the 2026 AFL Premiership season, the Demons are already well on the path to redemption and have the Saints firmly in their sights ahead of their mid-March clash at the MCG. What do you think the team will look like when they run out on to the G?

  • REPORT: Richmond

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.

It's Game Day and the 2026 AFL Premiership season is almost upon us as the Demons take to the field for their final practice match before the first ball is kicked in anger in 16 days time. What are you expecting to see from the Dees today as they take on the Tigers at Mars Stadium in Ballarat?
