Oval Dimensions - Game Style?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

As you all know, we've got Port at Adelaide Oval this week. Last week, we had the wide and long MCG where we've struggled this year. Some have fairly put that down to a lack of outside running, but when we look at Collingwood's performance on the QB weekend, they also cut us up through the middle.

So, my question is, based on the table below, what type of game-style should we 1. expect from Port and 2. use to our advantage (if we have one). Port has a very solid midfield, so where do you think the game will be won or lost?

My personal view: 1. Port will have the long option well-tuned, 2. With such a narrow oval, longitudinal separation, kicking to the free-man with a quick-hands to flow on will do it. I hope others can share their views as for me this is an interesting topic on game-style.

Cheers,

DN

I've come to wonder if our discrepancy in performances on the MCG (disregarding the better quality of opposition) are possibly related to the pace of the deck more so than a width issue - as there have been certain similarities in our losses regarding speed and spread from the contest. We have pace with movement and momentum on a hard deck but get exposed as slow off the mark when it's softer? I have no way to confirm this - maybe when we head to Perth it will give an idea - but we looked a million bucks in Alice.

Adelaide Oval use to be pretty flat - but I have no idea after the redevelopment?

Fair point SK,

my thoughts are that the dimensions do have an impact on game style. Take the Swans at the SCG for example, Or on the other extreme, Subiaco and WCE.

In my mind, there’s a definite style to be countered this weekend.

A soft deck should ameliorate both teams right? - extend both teams to display pure speed/accuracy, work rate and gut running.

Wonder what we can do to negate Wines, Gray and Wingard who all have shown recent form?

  • CASEY: Richmond

The winds finally returned to Casey Fields for the Demons’ third home game of the VFL season, and its impact was immediate. After two opening rounds played in uncharacteristically fine conditions, the Anzac Day clash brought back the familiar gusty conditions that have been a feature of the region at this time of the year.
Forced to kick into the breeze first, the slow-starting Demons faced a tricky opening against an enthusiastic young Tigers outfit. Casey responded by turning the contest into a scramble, pressuring Richmond into errors and missed targets. The tactic proved crucial, keeping the game tight for three and a half quarters before the Demons pulled away with the autumn wind at their backs.

  • REPORT: Richmond

It seemed as if the whole purpose of the Anzac Eve clash at the MCG between the Demons and the Tigers was building toward that single, unforgettable moment when Kozzie Pickett soared above Campbell Gray and all but fittingly etched his name onto the face of the 2026 Frank ‘Checker’ Hughes Medal.
