The Barometer: Check out who is hurt ahead and who might figure in your clubs Round 1 team

It hasn't always been entirely accurate in the past but FWIW ...

MELBOURNE

Chris Dawes (suspended) Round 2

Jeremy Howe (hamstring) test

Jayden Hunt (back) 2 weeks

Alex Neal-Bullen (knee) 3-4 weeks

Christian Petracca (knee) season

Jack Trengove (foot) indefinite

Bernie Vince (hamstring) test

ADAM BALDWINS FORECAST: The Demons have struggled in Round 1 over the past decade and needs an improved showing against Gold Coast after a disappointing performance against Essendon in their final NAB Challenge clash. They will be missing Chris Dawes (suspended), but up to seven new faces could debut for the club. Heritier Lumumba, Ben Newton, Sam Frost, Jesse Hogan and Jeff Garlett are definites, while Angus Brayshaw and Aaron vandenBerg are in the mix, but less likely. Jeremy Howe will play, but Bernie Vince needs a strong week on the track. Christian Salem will be deployed in a defensive post and Frost is likely to start forward in Dawes absence.

... and the opposition -

GOLD COAST

Gary Ablett (shoulder) test

Clay Cameron (illness) test

Charlie Dixon (ankle) 2-3 weeks

Tom Lynch (suspension) Round 2

Jaeger OMeara (knee) test

Henry Schade (ankle) test

BEN BROADS FORECAST: All eyes will be searching for one man when the team sheets

come in. Expect Gazza the Great to be named at the very least, with the champ firming by the day to play against the Demons. With the Suns tipped to bolt into

the eight in 2015, this is a game they should win despite the key outs of Tom Lynch and Charlie Dixon. Itll be a big day for Rodney Eade as begins to put his imprimatur on a side on the rise.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
