Concluding the series on the AFL PROSPECTUS Top 25 draft prospects, we start with a player from the strongest state for under 18 talent at the present time.

Alex Spina (North Adelaide, SA) 179cm, mid-forward plays like Robbie Gray.

Spina is a midfielder who could play as a small forward in the higher levels. He played in the NAB AFL Under-16 Championships as a 15-year-old in 2010 and again in 2011. He also played seven SANFL Under-18 games for

North Adelaide in 2011, averaging an elite 25 disposals and four clearances per game. With good composure and awareness, he started the 2012 season in the under- 18s and progressed to reserves level, playing the final three matches and averaging 18 disposals, five marks and three tackles per game. At the 2012 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, he played four matches averaging 12 disposals, four marks and two tackles per game, but these numbers were diluted due to only managing 28 minutes in his match against Western Australia.

FREAKO A level-headed creative midfielder who should make a big impact in 2013.

Small forwards with pace to burn are a valuable commodity at AFL clubs these days.

Lewis Taylor (Geelong I8) 173cm, mid-forward plays like Brent Harvey

Taylor is a small midfielder/forward with excellent disposal on both sides of his body. He is evasive, possesses very good leg speed and agility, enabling him to work out of tight contested situations on a regular basis. At the 2011 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships he averaged an elite 21 disposals, 14 uncontested possessions, four marks and two clearances. In season 2012, he played 15 matches at TAC Cup level for Geelong, with elite averages of 21 disposals and 13 uncontested possessions, as well booting 16 goals. From his four NAB AFL Under-18 Championship matches he averaged 18 disposals and 12 uncontested possessions with his performance against Queensland the standout - 26 disposals, 16 uncontested possessions and one goal.

FREAKO Wins his own ball, takes the game on and is a good decisions maker. What e1se could you ask for!?

Not sure if Freako's comments will help this player's cause.

Dwayne Wilson (Sturt, SA) 177cm, mid-forward plays like Danyle Pearce

Wilson is an exciting mid-forward who has good skills on both sides of his body. He is able to step through traffic with ease and is an excellent kick on his preferred left foot. At the 2011 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships, he averaged 11 disposals, seven uncontested possessions and three inside 50s for South Australia, while for Sturt in the SANFL under- 18s in 2012, he played 17 games, averaging 23 disposals and booting 30 goals and 14 behinds to finish eighth on the goalkicking table. Playing only 57% game time across his three 2012 NAB AFL Under-18 Championship matches he averaged a modest eight disposals per match but recorded an elite disposal efficiency of 86%.

FREAKO Timid, yet a prolific ball winner in the SANFL. Hoping the work ethic will match the talent.

  • PREVIEW: St. Kilda

It seems like only yesterday that these two sides faced off against each other in the centre of the continent. It was when Melbourne was experiencing a rare period of success with five wins from its previous six matches including victories over both of last year’s grand finalists.  Well, it wasn’t yesterday but it was early last month and it remains etched clearly in the memory. The Saints were going through a slump and the predicted outcome of their encounter at TIO Traeger Park was a virtual no-brainer. A Melbourne victory and another step closer to a possible rise into finals contention. Something that was unthinkable after opening the season with five straight defeats.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.
