Aaron Davey Crumbing Forward

We already have a small crumbing forward, his name is Austin Wonaeamirri. He of the sublime skills is back in the side and ready to create havoc again.

And how many games has he played in the last 2 seasons ?????

Main problems with Flash in the midfield are:

* He doesn't have much of a tank; great burst speed, but not sustained running like ... god I hate to say this ... Harvey (I feel so unclean).

* He doesn't have much physical strength, because of his size - these two combined mean that he's at a huge physical disadvantage when it comes to shaking a tag. But the killer is ...

* How the team makes it so damn difficult for him. At stoppages, Jamar drops it at his feet where Moloney is. If we get first possession from a stoppage, it's almost always an unguided kick from the middle of a pack; we hardly ever put it to the edge of the pack to exploit Davey's burst speed and skilful delivery. He's a very damaging outside mid, but at a physical disadvantage as an inside mid, and we don't yet even know how to use an outside mid adequately. Maybe this might change if we get guys like Gysberts, Scully & McKenzie back, providing that we give them enough time on the ball.

* For most other teams, he is the only Demon who needs a hard tag, because he is the only one who can bring so many others into the game if he gets away from them. One day we'll have other mids who will need a hard tag - Scully, Trengove, Gysberts for starters - but until then, it's Flash and only Flash. And he never gets blocked for and protected by teammates in the way that Judd & Ablett do.

In 2014, oppositions will have to tag Scully, Gysberts & Trengove & perhaps Sylvia, who will be just as damaging as Davey.

Davey resting in the forwardline is a good result for this team. He would also take a a good tagger away from the middle. Age and injuries have caught up with him, he certainly is not the jet he once was. Resting him forward could preserve his brilliance for longer in games, and potentially for further seasons of football.

His foot skills are stunning, and could be very dangerous inside 50. As a general rule I would like to have him play inside for parts of the game, but spend some time in the forwardline.

  • PREVIEW: Collingwood

Way back in March we contemplated the possibility of a Demon resurgence after Simon Goodwin’s summer of love. Many issues at the club had seemingly been addressed, key players were returning from injury and a brand new day was about to dawn. We imagined the coach pulling a rabbit out of a hat. The team would roar up the charts, push aside every opponent and make its way to a Grand Final ending in ultimate triumph with Goody and Max holding the premiership cup aloft under a shower of red and blue ticker tape.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
