Good Call, Bad Call

In a two or three years the midfield will look more like Scully, Trengove, Grimes, Gysberts, Viney, Mckenzie and the likes of Moloney and Jones will become depth players. Much like the Pies this year when you had a few younger boys step up and blokes like Lockyer couldn't get a game.

I'm sure I can remember stats from last year that Moloney had about 70% game time on the ball, while Scully had something like 9%. If we're to challenge, that's gotta change! In fact, I reckon it's not until Sculls gets 70% on-ball time that we're serious about challenging.

Moloney is going to be important against some opposition midfields - Saints come to mind, where we'll need his toughness - but will be a liability against speedy well-drilled midfields ... like Essendon, obviously, and maybe Carltank. We need to use him more wisely, not just plonk him in every game because he can't play anywhere else.

The question for me is that if Moloney's on-ball time is going to decrease, where else does he play? I'd like to see how he goes HBF or even BP, where he could give a lot of drive, and could even change onto the ball in the last quarter if the game was tight.

Moloney & Jones should never be on the ball at the same time. Jones has more strings to his bow, as a tagger for instance, and perhaps forward. Another problem with both of them is that neither of them kick enough goals. Maybe either of them could be defensive HFFs too. They're both born-&-bred on-ballers, but in years to come they're going to have to get used to other roles, or just lose importance.

  • REPORT: Adelaide

The atmosphere at the Melbourne Football Club at the beginning of the season was aspirational following an injury-plagued year in 2024. Coach Simon Goodwin had lofty expectations with the return of key players, the anticipated improvement from a maturing group with a few years of experience under their belts, and some exceptional young talent also joining the ranks. All of that went by the wayside as the team failed to click into action early on. It rallied briefly with a new strategy but has fallen again with five more  consecutive defeats.

  • CASEY: Coburg

The Casey Demons returned to their home ground which was once a graveyard for opposing teams but they managed to gift the four points on offer to Coburg with yet another of their trademark displays of inaccuracy in front of goals and some undisciplined football that earned the displeasure of the umpires late in the game. The home team was welcomed by a small crowd at Casey Fields and looked right at home as it dominated the first three quarters and led for all bar the last five minutes of the game. In the end, they came away with nothing, despite winning everywhere but on the scoreboard and the free kick count.

  • POSTGAME: Rd 17 vs Adelaide

The Demons were wasteful early before putting the foot down early in the 2nd quarter but they chased tail for the remainder of the match. They could not get their first use of the footy after half time and when they did poor skills, execution and decision making let them down.
