gold coast trade salary cap solution

Featured Replies

So it seems the AFL have decided to create an ad hoc entirely subjective process to compensate clubs for losing players.

Here's what should happen:

New clubs get given the draft selctions + salary cap advantages (maybe even double) that diminish over time.

Instead of the AFL awarding compensatory draft picks, if GC17 or GWS seek an uncontracted player at another club that is fine.

However, the clubs can negotiate a trade - like any other uncontracted player.

Significantly the new clubs can trade players, picks or Salary cap space

Imagine this: Geelong know they're going to lose Gary Ablett...it looks like they may get two mid to late 1st round picks

What if they negotiated a second round pick and say 300k of GC cap space

- Geelong would find themselves free of G Ablett's contract, plus 5 or whatever many years with an extra 300k or whatever the agreed amount is. (this may see them with 600k to play with [Ablett salary+cap trade])

This would ensure new clubs actually get talent but not to the effect of a talent drain from some clubs

thoughts?

Yes, but in this the new clubs get a double advantage, more cap space - "better" players.

New clubs would need to balance (and could) between win now/future winning like any club, and would maintain advantages.

And, clubs with the prospect of adding a little more cap room at least there's some incentive for clubs to deal with GC or GWS rather than sook and be powerless

Thoughts? Honestly?

Poorly thought-out idea that has little merit.

And it is far too late for the idea to be of any worth anyway.

They really had me fooled when I picked them with great confidence to beat the Bombers at Gather Round last week. I should have recognised that nothing is more quintessentially Melbourne than defeating the undefeated early premiership favourite one week and losing to a winless cellar dweller on its way to establishing a record losing streak the next.
