Three people will 'win' us the priority pick

We all know what's required of us to get a priority pick, we play Richmond, North, Fremantle, Carlton and St.Kilda and we can only afford to win one game. I don't want to get into the discussion of whether we should tank or not, it's been done to death and the decision has already been made. The MFC want the pp, there is no doubt about and we should all accept it.

We have three obstacles standing in our way - Richmond, North and Fremantle. First though I'll discuss the other two games. We won't win against Carlton, they have two much class in the middle and they're desperate to play finals. Their fans will tear princes park down if they fail this year. St.Kilda will be in one of two scenarios, if they remain ubeaten they'll be determined to go through the home and away season undefeated and if they drop a game between now and then they'll want to to go into their finals campaign with some good form. Either way they obviously have far too much talent. Good news for us.

Now the bad news. Richmond, North and Freo. All poor sides playing ordinary football. I've pencilled the Freo game in for a win, although if Pavlich and Sandilands have a good game anything can happen, cross fingers.

The focus is then on the tiggers and North as the danger games. So, who are the three people who will get us our priority pick? The first two are Darren Crocker and Jade Rawlings. In a situation very similiar to late in 2007 against Carlton, we were up against a team whose coach was secure in the knowledge that he had the gig the following season, whilst our caretaker coach knew if he didn't get the main job he would most likely leave the club as it's standard practice for new coaches bring in their own group who they know and trust. Just like our coach back then was desperate to prove himself, Rawlings and Crocker and in the same boat. Uncertain future but with a chance to cement themselves.

Who is the third person you ask? Well, that's Nathan Buckley for deciding to stay at Collingwood and leaving the door ajar for Rawlings or Crocker. So at the end of November if Melbourne adds Scully and another young champ like Trengove to the list, have a beer for Bucks in honour of his contribution to his services to the MFC!!

We've actually got 2 obstacles standing in the way of the Priority Pick in my opinion. They are Richmond and North Melbourne.

  • PREVIEW: Collingwood

Way back in March we contemplated the possibility of a Demon resurgence after Simon Goodwin’s summer of love. Many issues at the club had seemingly been addressed, key players were returning from injury and a brand new day was about to dawn. We imagined the coach pulling a rabbit out of a hat. The team would roar up the charts, push aside every opponent and make its way to a Grand Final ending in ultimate triumph with Goody and Max holding the premiership cup aloft under a shower of red and blue ticker tape.

We’re back! That was fun. The Mighty Dees’ Season 10 campaign is off toa flying start with a commanding 48-point winover the Western Bulldogs, retaining the Hampson-Hardeman Cup in style. After a hard-fought first half in slippery conditions, the Dees came out in the second half and showcased their trademark superior class, piling on four goals in the third termand never looked back.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
