Now I know this is in the football board, but I read in yesterdays age that the new Soccer team set to join the A-League, might be basing itself out in Cranbourne at Casey Fields...

Now, at first I thought that they are going to steal our thunder, but then I realised that a new team out there could further gain interest in the area, adding further weight to our position at Casey..

can anyone (Casey Scorp?) enlighten me on whether this is more or less likely to have a positive impact on Melbourne.

I think that this would be a good thing for all - the new club, casey and MFC. The place is more than big enough for all and the awareness that the A-League would bring to Casey would be just what they are wanting. A couple of NAB matches a year, plus A-League matches, Scorpion matches and premier league cricket and the cachet of the place just keeps growing.

This in turn would make it less of a leap to consider bringing the main oval up to scratch for an AFL game.

went to training this morning, saw reporters carrying a soccer ball and i wondered what they were doing, the more publicity the better i suppose.

interesting...maybe it could also speed up the process of getting good public transport out there

ps Jacktheripper, any good/bad news from training?

The subject is pretty misleading IMO.

Anyhow, Casey Fields has been slated as a soccer 'centre' so it wouldn't be terribly surprising.

Also went to Casey this morning, the soccer was for channel 4 from the UK. The program was " Location location" a reality program, they interviewed Robbo

[ of course], he tried to teach one of them to bounce the ball, hopeless.

I have it on my camera if I only knew how to put some on this web.

DB came up to me and asked me if I was filming training on video, no just photos.

Rivers looked great, did everything everybody did, he still did everything right.

The boys looked great except Jamar with his moon boot on.

Casey is terrific great surface, the physio said if they were training at the junction oval they would be footsore after a couple of hours. At Casey

no problems . We left after 3 hours and they were still going strong.

ONE TOWN..........ONE TEAM...........ONE PASSION

I think it would help MFC.

While both clubs would probably be competing with each other for lower tier local sponsors, both are looking nation-wide for big ticket sponsors. The competition for local sponsorship probably won’t affect each of them significantly on the bottom line.

As well, as there will be so many new and developing businesses in the Casey area, the local sponsorship opportunities at a lower tier will grow over the years.

The best thing I think, though, is a variation on Club Melbourne theme where elite teams from the two most popular codes in the country (AFL & A-league) have an affiliation with the Casey Fields complex developing as an centre for elite sport. I don’t know a lot about CM, but presumably it had a number of strong points about the benefits of close association between elite teams.

I don’t think we’ll see A-League matches at Casey Fields. I suspect that the new team will have its sights firmly on the MRS for matches.

Let’s hope so – any impetus would be helpful.

…. Casey Fields has been slated as a soccer 'centre' so it wouldn't be terribly surprising.

Casey Fields has been touted by FFV as a soccer “Centre of Excellence” – one of 12 around Victoria (8 in metro, 4 in regional/country).

The possibility of an A-league team being based there, or more likely using it as a part time training base (similar to MFC), is not part of the Centre of Excellence proposal.

Any A-league team proposal would be an added benefit.

Also went to Casey this morning, ….

That’s an interesting comment, and something I wasn’t aware of.

I knew that competing with cricket for access to JO was an issue, and no goal posts, but had assumed that the surface at JO was also first class in all respects. Perhaps not.

I didn't say it was part of the proposal, I said that given it's been touted as one of the major soccer centres - dubbed 'centres of excellence' it seems - it's not terribly surprising that this rumour is going around.

i wouldnt call it a rumour per se, as it came from the Chief that Casey is one of the possible options of a base

The Demons’ aggressive small forward who kicks goals and defends the Demons’ ball in the forward arc. The years are rolling by but May continued to be rock solid in a key defensive position despite some injury concerns. It was another strong season from McVee who spent most of his time mainly at half back but he also looked at home on a few occasions when he was moved into the midfield.
