Demons in the news (2/11/08)

I searched high and low for news of the big clash between the Demons and the Blues at Goshs Paddock today at 2pm but alas, couldn't find a word in any of the Sunday papers. Melbourne is in the news however - tanks to some interesting feature articles in the Sunday Age:

Carroll vows to stay off the booze

Carroll was not among the seven players chopped from Melbourne by Friday's first list lodgement deadline, but the Demons hope to resolve the issue ahead of the next deadline of November 14.

Carroll is believed to be keen to start training with St Kilda in mid-November. The Demons are talking with his manager, Ricky Nixon, about their salary cap, Carroll's rights to be paid his contracted money and the likelihood of another club such as the Saints drafting him and taking over some of his salary.

Robertson isn't finished just yet

A FEW weeks ago, Russell Robertson featured on the television program 20 to 1. But as his face appeared on screen, three rather disturbing words were printed beneath: "Former AFL player." Robertson's phone started ringing.

loved the interview with Robbo... you can tell just how much that man bleeds red and blue... he gets criticised alot around here for the way he plays his footy, but noone loves the dees more than this bloke...

as people have said before

i think robbo is one of our most respected players from outside the club

i have never had an argument with an opposition supporter about robbo, yet i have had huge arguments about rivers, neitz, davey, schwartz, etc...and most recently garland because people still dont know who he is!

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.

After five consecutive defeats, the Demons have now notched up back-to-back victories, comfortably accounting for the Tigers in the traditional ANZAC Eve clash. They surged to a commanding 44-point lead early in the final quarter before easing off the pedal, resting skipper Max Gawn and conceding the last four goals of the game to close out a solid 20-point win.

It's Game Day and the Demons return to the MCG to face the Tigers in their annual Blockbuster on ANZAC Eve for the 10th time. The Dees will be desperate to reignite their stuttering 2025 campaign and claim just their second win of the season. Can the Demons dig deep and find that ANZAC Spirit to snatch back to back wins?
