Queen..would you think that instead of trying to create a head under which the AFL seem to think a body wil grow ( in teh west ) that they say cool their heels and invest a reasonable amount..but only a fraction of the touted 20M ( say a quarter of that ) into furhter developing a foundation via better participation in AFL at under age levels in the outer burbs !

Personally I think the code is stil half a generation away from even conceiving suficient interest in a second team...but do the ground work and it might just naturally flourish..as opposed to creating something that doesnt really exist..i.e West Syd FC !!

I tend to agree with this BB. Plant a seed and watch it grow for 10 years I say. Invest over time..Ie $5m a year for 10 years to build a foundation. If they put all their eggs in one basket initially, they risk it falling over or spending alot more to keep it afloat or re-planting a seed again further down the track.

I understand the AFL's objective but IMO they can still go there, it's just that better planning is required. It's not a case of "build it, and they will come" - for they will come initially for the launch for a peek, but after that.....If the people in West Sydney dip their foot in (take a look) and don't like the temperature so to speak they may not go in.

Do the ground work first Vlad, plant the seed, add water over time and watch it grow. As you've suggested BB...introduce a 2nd tier team in that area for a start.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

  • POSTGAME: West Coast

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
