The sunny skies and still, clear conditions that greeted fans on their arrival created a dreamlike Easter carnival atmosphere for Casey’s game against Footscray at Casey Fields. After their dreams of a flying start to the new season were shattered a week earlier with a disappointing error-riddled opening, the home supporters were given much hope with an improved performance from their team. They were treated with a high standard game of VFL football played in perfect conditions. It was Footscray’s steadiness under pressure and a huge advantage in experience that saw them run out victorious by 14 points, but what the fans saw in the Casey performance was not only improvement but also, a plethora of encouraging signs for the future. Both sides came well out of the blocks early and traded goals until Casey got on top with three quick goals to hold an 18 point lead in mid-term. The Casey rucks and midfielders opened strongly giving the forwards room to move and the goals came. In defence, Jed Adams was a key in his defensive role but when he went off injured, the strong marking Rory Lobb booted two goals and Bianco another to even the scores with the goals deep into time on. After the break, Casey dominated the first half of the second quarter but apart from an easy initial goal to Schache, his third, the Demons simply could not hit targets. Moved back to full forward this week, Matt Jefferson had a purple patch taking some strong marks but his good work was undone with wayward kicking for goal. During this period, he hit the post twice while two other shots failed to score at all. As often happens, the Bulldogs made them pay for their errant kicking at goal scoring four of the next five goals (with Jefferson finally hitting the target for the first time) to go into the sheds at half time with an 8 point lead. The Dogs’ greater accuracy in the third quarter when the Demons kicked only six behinds, saw them stretch the lead to 19 points and while Casey finally got their kicking boots on in the final term, Footscray always had the answers and held on to record a well-deserved 14 point victory. The visitors were loaded with experience at the highest level including two 150 plus AFL games players Rory Lobb (5 goals) and Melbourne premiership player James Harmes (with a game high 33 disposals), 100 gamer Alex Keath and a bevy of other names like Garcia, Jones, McNeil, O’Donnell, Scott and Spicer. By way of contrast, Casey’s only Melbourne listers with experience at AFL level were Josh Schache with 76 games across three clubs and Brisbane recruit Tom Fullarton with 19 games at the Lions. Both had good games with Schache important with four goals but in the heat of battle, the experience differential was significant, especially after Bailey Laurie and Adam Tomlinson were withdrawn from the side and flew to Adelaide to be with the Melbourne team. One of the main functions of this tier of football is to provide a good platform for an AFL club’s youth and another, to give local communities access to a high standard of sport. In this regard, the game showcased the potential at Casey for the fulfillment of many future dreams. Despite Jefferson’s missed goalkicking opportunities (he finished with 2.3 but his accuracy in the past has been sound), the game proved to be a massive confidence booster for him in terms of the way he clunked his seven marks and also, for his ground level play. His duel with fellow uncapped 2022 first round draftee Jedd Busslinger was a ripper and one can imagine similar contests in the future on a higher stage. Also impressive from that class of 2022 were key defender Jed Adams who played his best game yet at Casey, finishing with 11 disposals, rookie ruckman Will Verrall’s 25 hit outs, 19 possessions and two goals and late rookie pick Oliver Sestan (18 disposals, six tackles and a goal) whose improvement over summer has been remarkable. He crashed through packs and intimated the opposition at times in a strong display. Andy Moniz-Wakefield was good again with 23 disposals as he pushes hard for senior selection as he awaits an opening to present itself at Melbourne. Adding to the excitement was the form of Melbourne’s 2023 first-round draftee Koltyn Tholstrup and father/son pick Kynan Brown. The Kolt was again super-impressive with his strength and maturity and the classy way he gathered his 19 touches and six tackles, setting up numerous forward opportunities. The club will have to find a way to include him in its AFL plans soon. Brown was busy again and finished with 16 disposals. Much has been written about the departure of a number of Casey regulars at the end of last season. Some, like heart and soul player and hard tackler Jimmy Munro are irreplaceable but the club’s recruitment has, on this game’s evidence, been very strong. Campbell Husthwaite was again prolific in the middle, Leo Connolly, a revelation off half back (both had 24 disposals) and Mitch Szybkowski was excellent, particularly early in the game. Skipper Mitch White plugged away to be his team’s best for the day while Tyler Edwards also picked up plenty of the football. The end result was most satisfying for the fans who came to support the team over the Easter holiday. A win is not far away and could come next Saturday week against Port Melbourne. Such an outcome might not be the stuff of dreams but the promise of good times is definitely on the horizon for the Melbourne/Casey alliance. There was an ill wind blowing for the home side at Casey Fields on Saturday but you wouldn’t have noticed if you turned up seven or eight minutes into the second quarter with the scoreboard showing the Casey Demons holding a lead of 7.5.47 to Footscray’s solitary point. Up to that stage, the depleted Dees combination had taken full advantage of the windy conditions and headed by veterans Nathan Jones, Jimmy Munro and Mitch White had came out of the blocks and plundered the Bulldogs’ defence. The game took a dramatic turn after that. The Bulldogs scored their first major at the 9 minute mark of the second quarter and went on to add five more unanswered goals to be within reach of the rapidly tiring Demons by half time. The slaughter continued unabated and, apart from a single third quarter goal in the middle of the third term, the Demons were able to add a couple of late game junk time goals to George Grey to fall by an inglorious 37 points. This was only Casey’s second loss for the season, the first was by just a point, but it plunged the Demons down the ladder into fifth place. No excuses are acceptable but it should be said that the Delta strain of the Covid19 panic played a crucial role in the outcome. While the Bulldogs AFL side was playing locally on Saturday, the Melbourne Demons were flying around the country with a large contingent of players who would otherwise have been playing for Casey. Players such Chandler, Daw, Melksham, Joel Smith, Weideman and vandenBerg should have formed the backbone of the team but instead, were flying backward and forward between Melbourne and Brisbane. The total number of changes was seven - all of them AFL listed Demons! It was left to the very few older hands such as Jones, Nev Jetta and Jay Lockhart and the Casey older guard to lead a very green group of younger players from suburban and country competitions into the fray. Many had been playing very little football of any sort in recent weeks due to the lockdowns and it showed after the frenetic pace of the opening. In the ensuing gloom of the day, the Demons’ mid season rookie Kye Declase once again stood out. He amassed 27 disposals and kicked a goal in a promising display. Oskar Baker also had his moments With Melbourne and its extended squad up in the air again this week, little respite can be expected for the Delta Demons next week. 2021 VFL Mens Casey Demons 6.4.40 7.5.47 8.9.57 10.9.69 Footscray Bulldogs 0.1.1 6.3.39 11.5.71 16.10.106 Goals Casey Demons Grey 3 White 2 Baker Bedford Declase Ellison Jones Footscray Bulldogs Cavarra McNeil West 3 Bedendo Drummond Craig-Peters Glass-McCasker McComb Vandermeer William Best Casey Demons Jones White Declase Ellison Lockhart Jetta Footscray Bulldogs West McComb Sullivan Bedendo Young Cavarra Statistics Oskar Baker 1 goal 14 kicks 6 handballs 20 disposals 5 marks 2 tackles 83 dream team points Toby Bedford 1 goal 7 kicks 7 handballs 14 disposals 3 marks 8 tackles 80 dream team points Jack Bell 5 kicks 5 handballs 10 disposals 1 mark 2 tackles 12 hit outs 49 dream team points Aaron Bradtke 4 kicks 3 handballs 7 disposals 2 marks 7 hit outs 22 dream team points Jaxon Briggs 6 kicks 4 handballs 10 disposals 2 marks 5 tackles 52 dream team points Kye Declase 1 goal 16 kicks 11 handballs 27 disposals 5 marks 1 tackle 86 dream team points Corey Ellison 1 goals 6 kicks 2 handballs 8 disposals 6 marks 4 tackles 2 hit outs 61 dream team points Zac Foot 1 behind 5 kicks 5 handballs 10 disposals 2 marks 2 tackles 38 dream team points Tom Freeman 8 kicks 8 disposals 3 marks 33 dream team points George Grey 3 goals 4 kicks 1 handballs 5 disposals 3 marks 6 tackles 62 dream team points Jack Hutchins 4 kicks 4 disposals 4 marks 18 dream team points Neville Jetta 8 kicks 5 handballs 13 disposals 5 marks 3 tackles 58 dream team points Nathan Jones 1 goals 3 behinds 20 kicks 9 handballs 29 disposals 4 marks 3 ttackles 105 dream team points Bayley Laurie 5 kicks 2 handballs 7 disposals 2 marks 4 tackles 41 dream team points Jay Lockhart 11 kicks 5 handballs 16 disposals 4 marks 3 tackles 66 dream team points James Munro kicks handballs disposals marks tackles dream team points Fraser Rosman 1 behind 6 kicks 2 handballs 8 disposals 2 marks 4 tackles 42 dream team points Deakyn Smith 5 kicks 7 handballs 12 disposals 1 mark 1 tackles 36 dream team points Ryan Sparkes 5 kicks 1 handballs 6 disposals 5 marks 3 tackles 44 dream team points Cory Stockdale 1 behind 7 kicks 2 handballs 9 disposals 1 mark 4 tackles 42 dream team points Daniel Turner 9 kicks 4 handballs 13 disposals 4 marks 1 tackles 51 dream team points Mitch White 2 goals 1 behinds 11 kicks 2 handballs 13 disposals 6 marks 3 tackles 81 dream team points

Thanks to the large injury list at Melbourne, the Casey Demons went into their fifth round clash with Footscray VFL as the underdogs and despite a courageous showing up to half time after conceding the game’s first four goals, their third quarter fade out saw them fall short against quality opposition for the second time in a week. Casey went into the game with only 9 AFL listers after Declan Keilty was called up to make his debut when Tim Smith was forced to pull out of the Melbourne team with back issues. The Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead of 25 points with the breeze before Casey skipper Mitch White scored his team’s first goal and another by Kade Chandler brought the Demons to within two goals at the first break. Corey Wagner was superb throughout but his contribution in the first quarter was exceptional and kept his team in the game. The Demons applied great pressure early in the second term and took control of the game with the wind at their backs and three goals by the 15 minute mark saw them in the lead by 9 points at one stage. The Bulldogs slowed the pace of the game down and scored a vital goal in the shadows of half time to lay the foundations for a big third quarter with the wind. Casey fought back after conceding the first goal of the final term but they were unable to match their efforts of last week when they nearly stole the game from the Tigers. Sam Weideman reacted strongly to his axing from the Melbourne team and was always dangerous whether up forward or giving a chop out to Liam Wale-Buxton in the ruck. Oskar Baker played his best game since suffering a bad hamstring injury late last year and chimed in with a couple of goals in the second quarter. There were also encouraging signs from two young South Australians Tom Sparrow, again hard at the ball and developing key defender Harry Petty. Casey’s Jimmy Munro was hard at it as usual in his 100th game and youngsters Tom Freeman and Aidan Quigley were excellent contributors on the day. Things don’t get any easier with a trip to Windy Hill against the top placed Bombers. 2019 Hard Yakka / Totally Workwear VFL Casey Demons 2.2.14 5.7.37 5.8.38 8.11.59 Footscray VFL 4.2.26 5.4.34 9.9.63 11.10.76 Goals Casey Demons Baker Weideman 2 Chandler Munro Quigley White Footscray VFL Boyd 3 Cavarra Gardner 2 Barnett Lipinski Nash West Best Casey Demons C Wagner Sparrow Petty T Freeman Baker Quigley Footscray VFL Williams Young West Smith Scott Boyd Statistics Oskar Baker 2 goals 1 behind 15 kicks 5 handballs 20 disposals 5 marks 4 tackles 99 dream team points Toby Bedford 1 kick 2 handballs 3 disposals 1 mark 2 tackles 15 dream team points Jaxon Briggs 5 kicks 7 handballs 12 disposals 3 marks 2 tackles 34 dream team points Kade Chandler 1 goal 5 kicks 2 handballs 7 disposals 3 marks 2 tackles 44 dream team points Wayne Collis 4 kicks 1 handball 5 disposals 1 mark 7 tackles 1 hit out 44 dream team points Jake Di Pasquale 9 kicks 11 handballs 20 disposals 2 marks 5 tackles 75 dream team points Tom Freeman 12 kicks 4 handballs 16 disposals 7 marks 1 tackles 70 dream team points Mitch Gent 6 kicks 6 handballs 12 disposals 4 marks 2 tackles 48 dream team points Jack Hutchins 6 kicks 3 handballs 9 disposals 3 marks 28 dream team points James Jordon 13 kicks 6 handballs 19 disposals 6 marks 3 tackles 81 dream team points Mykelti Lefau 1 behind 8 kicks 3 handballs 11 disposals 1 marks 4 tackles 4 hit outs 55 dream team points Mitchell Lewis 1 behind 8 kicks 7 handballs 15 disposals 5 marks 2 tackles 60 dream team points Nick Lowden 5 kicks 2 handballs 7 disposals 3 marks 2 tackles 33 dream team points James Munro 1 goal 9 kicks 12 handballs 21 disposals 5 marks 6 tackles 88 dream team points Harrison Petty 10 kicks 6 handballs 16 disposals 8 marks 2 tackles 71 dream team points Aidan Quigley 1 goal 9 kicks 8 handballs 17 disposals 3 marks 4 tackles 74 dream team points Charlie Spargo 8 kicks 7 handballs 15 disposals 5 marks 4 tackles 59 dream team points Tom Sparrow 1 behind 14 kicks 7 handballs 21 disposals 1 marks 6 tackles 82 dream team points Cory Stockdale 7 kicks 2 handballs 9 disposals 3 marks 4 tackles 47 dream team points Corey Wagner 16 kicks 9 handballs 25 disposals 6 marks 5 tackles 104 dream team points Liam Wale-Buxton 1 behind 2 kicks 2 handballs 4 disposals 2 marks 3 tackles 22 hit outs 48 dream team points Sam Weideman 2 goals 3 behinds 13 kicks 8 handballs 21 disposals 7 marks 2 tackles 6 hit outs 108 dream team points Mitchell White 1 goal 1 behind 7 kicks 3 handballs 10 disposals 5 marks 2 tackles 55 dream team points

The Casey Demons continued their winning run against Footscray on Sunday to make it nine in a row after a hard fought battle in a wind affected game at Casey Fields The winning result was however, not as easy and straightforward as one would have anticipated especially after some withdrawals from the team through injuries. At half time, the Demons were staring at defeat for the first time in two and a half months after the Bulldogs took full advantage of the northerly wind blowing down the ground, kicking four goals in time on to take a 20 point lead into the sheds at the main break. But it is not for nothing that the Demons are sitting in second place on the VFL premiership ladder and they showed their class by holding the Dogs scoreless in the premiership quarter while they piled on five goals four behinds of their own and then they narrowly outscored their opponent in the last to win by 15 points. Footscray, which is battling with a log jam of teams for a finals berth were never one to be taken lightly, given that they are one of only two clubs this season to have beaten ladder leaders Richmond. So while the home team scored the first goal through James Munro, the determined Doggies defended strongly against the wind and held them to a lead of only a goal. After an arm-wrestle for much of the first half of the second term, Footscray edged ahead to lead by 26 points in the shadows of half time before a handy Angus Scott major against the run of play gave the Demons some breathing space. Sam Weideman who had been a little off target in the first half came to the fore with the first goal after the main break and two more in the last quarter. That was enough to see the team home particularly as our friend the wind decided to moderate a little and the Bulldogs' legs seemed to tire as well and the game came to a spluttering halt with the Dees well in control. When the heat was on, Casey was well served in defence by Jay Lockhart, Declan Keilty and the Wagner brothers and skipper Jack Hutchins. Cam Pedersen was strong throughout and Dom Tyson had far too much skill and ball winning ability in the middle for the Demons. Aaron vandenBerg backed up his excellent first up return game with another solid performance and will be challenging soon for a place in the Melbourne senior side. Next up for Casey is an away game against Geelong VFL at GMHBA Stadium when second place and a home final could well be determined. In a tight contest played on a cold night and in slippery conditions when the lead never stretched beyond the final 13 point margin, a little known Casey footballer was one of only two on the ground to score multiple goals. It was journeyman Yilber Zijai's three goals that made all the difference in the VFL 2016 grand final replay against Footscray to make it four wins in a row for the rapidly rising Demons at Casey Fields on Saturday night. Zijai who previously played 27 VFL games for the Sandringham Zebras over a four-year period moved to Eastern FL club Noble Park last year and was recruited to the Demons along with the returning Mitch Gent at the start of this year. He injured a calf in the opening match of the season and this was only his second senior game for the club. His third goal, kicked at the fourteen minute mark of the final term, helped break the deadlock between the teams in a tense period of play. Seven minutes later, first gamer Mitch Cox made the game safe for the home side with a goal after a fifty metre penalty. It was a fine effort because the Doggies had 16 AFL-listed players while Casey's team was a far cry from the one that won the minor premiership and contested last year's finals. Gone are the likes of Lynden Dunn, Jack Grimes, Matt Jones, Viv Michie, Ben Newton, and Dean Terlich while Colin Garland is out injured and some of the younger players are now at AFL level. The Demons did gain from some significant contributions of players on the cusp of an AFL recall, especially given the circumstances of the club's multiple six day breaks at this time. Jack Trengove is one "veteran" of last year's campaign who continues to provide inspirational leadership. His 29 disposals through the middle were huge. Jay Kennedy-Harris was again impressive with his work rate continuing a superb run of form in recent weeks. He was on from the beginning, kicked the game's opening goal and amassed 33 disposals and nine tackles. Billy Stretch was in fine touch and all class with 24 possessions and Josh Wagner also put his hand up for recall. Rookie Corey Maynard looks a likely type who has made great strides in the transition from NBA to VFL. On current form, further promotion beckons at some time in the future while James Munro was once again solid and prolific in his ballwinning efforts. Now holding down sixth place on the ladder, Casey faces a challenging encounter with top-of-the-ladder Box Hill Hawks away from home next Saturday afternoon, especially given the likelihood of some players being rested in a rotation to cover Melbourne's interstate trip of a second six-day break.
