SCORPIONS DISCOVER THEIR FRIEND, THE WIND by KC from Casey The Casey Scorpions managed the windy conditions far better at home against Sandringham than they did a week ago against Footscray and the result was a resounding 46 point victory that saw them hold second place on the ladder a game behind Williamstown but with a game in hand. In stunning contrast to their efforts a week earlier, the Scorpions kept the Zebras down to a single point in two quarters against the wind as they dominated the stoppages despite the early loss to injury of giant ruckman Jake Spencer. In his place Cam Pedersen and red-head Declan Keilty were given the responsibility of taking on the Sandy tall brigade and they did so effectively. They were in total control and allowed their on ball teammates to decisively win the contests at ground level thanks in part to two Demons - Tom Bugg and Ben Kennedy - who were emergencies over in Perth and made the trip back in time to take part in the game. The Scorps were also well served by Jack Grimes, Jack Trengove, Vic Michie, Ben Newton and hard nosed youngster Clayton Oliver who turned 19 during the week. They dominated early into the wind scoring 3.4.22 to trail by a mere three points at the first break and turned that into a 19 point lead at half time. From there, they withstood a Sandringham fight back which was mainly achieved through some long goals against the tide of play and aided by the strengthening wind because Casey's midfield continued to win the contests and control the football. The unlikely hero up forward was defender Dean Terlich whose move into attack reaped a four goal reward for coach Justin Plapp. Terlich had a partner in crime in Angus Scott who was damaging all over the ground and chipped in with a couple of goals. The unsung heroes in the back line were experienced pair Colin Garland and Lynden Dunn who provided the steel to keep the opposition forwards at bay even when the strong wind made the job of the defenders difficult. The Scorpions ran away with it in the ended to double the Zebras' score and give themselves a much needed percentage boost. When old rivals Casey and Sandringham met at Casey Fields in the VFL's televised match of the day on Saturday, the home side produced an exceptionally poor opening quarter to virtually cede the game from the beginning of the game. Kicking with the aid of the breeze, the Scorpions were goalless at the first break and it took until the 11-minute mark of the second term before they were able to kick their first goal. Both teams had a strong contingent of AFL listers but Casey lost Shannon Byrnes and Jack Hutchins to injury from their VFL list before the game and James Munro (shoulder) early in proceedings. It also struggled in attack throughout the game and relied on resting ruckmen Mark Jamar and Max Gawn to take the marks in front of goal. Alas, both failed to convert when they had the early opportunities and, as a consequence, the team played catch up football all day. The Scorps struggled with the wind all day and fumbling and poor decision making was a feature of their game. By half time they were in arrears by 25 points and a big effort was required if they were to get themselves back in with a chance. The inspiration came from Gawn who kicked one himself and have another away to a teammate as the opened the third term with three quick goals to get to within 7 points before the Zebras regrouped to push the lead out to 12 at three quarter time. They then dominated the final term to run away to a comfortable 35 point win. Former Demon captain Jack Grimes was the best for Casey in a defensive role and was well backed up by Viv Michie and Matt Jones. Max Gawn was the best of the big men while youngsters Alex Neal-Bullen and Oscar McDonald continued to show encouraging form. All in all, it was a disappointing result after the team spent last week basking in second spot on the VFL ladder. This spurred Sandy on and they improved their direction into attack to score three unanswered goals. During the break, coach Brett Lovett stressed the importance of using the big wind advantage but the Zebras bottled things up nicely and did a lot of the early attacking. Things were looking grim as the Scorps struggled to score until Jordan Gysberts read the play well and goaled for the home side. Soon after, Jack Fitzpatrick marked on a lead to kick his second to make it 2 points the difference and when a courageous mark from Matthew Bate led to Casey's fifth goal, it took the lead. A late goal against the run of play to Sandy saw the Scorpions' lead cut to a mere two points at half time. The midfield battle was being won by the home team which had Dave Collins, James Magner, Brent Moloney and Jordan Gysberts winning all the close in battles that were so important in the tough conditions. The lead changed hands again early in the third term after a lucky free to the Zebras who scored another soon after for their third unanswered goal. Casey tightened up its defence in the swirly conditions and Will Petropoulos took advantage of a fifty metre penalty to goal from close in to bring it back to a four point game. Late in the quarter, Sandy goaled from the boundary but most felt that an eleven point lead would be difficult to defend in the conditions. Comeback kid Kyle Matthews kicked the first of his two final quarter goals early in the term and then a series of points to Casey got things to even terms before a long goal from defender Jai Sheahan gave them the lead. A minor revival by Sandringham saw them take the lead back with two goals against the run of things but Fitzpatrick chipped in with a couple of real team lifters. Matthews put things beyond doubt with a captain's goal and Josh Tynan added one at the end to make it a 19 point win. The real bonus then came as scores from the other grounds saw Casey on top in the final ladder calculations. The result was a triumph for the team and its blend of AFL and VFL listed players given that the circumstances allowed only nine Demons in the side. The benefits of the mix were evident everywhere from the rucks where Mark Jamar and Luke Hill (38 and 28 hit outs respectively) had the edge to on ballers Collins (34 touches), Moloney, Magner (24 each) and Gysberts (23) who held sway at the stoppages and the tight contrsts. Jai Sheahan, Troy Davis, Evan Panozza and Luke Tynan held together a tight defence and Jack Fitzpatrick, with four goals, was the star up forward. Josh Tynan with 24 disposals played his best game since returning from injury while Matthews and Danny Nicholls are also proving their value to the team after long stints on the sidelines. Casey has a score to settle with Werribee in Sunday's Qualfying Final at Casey Fields. The Tigers knocked them out of last year's finals at the semi stage and inflicted the Scorps' biggest defeat of the season earlier this year at Avalon Airport Oval. It promises to be a cracker of a game.
