  1. Ratten's Carlton coaching career finished

BRETT Ratten’s coaching career at Carlton is finished. His official termination will be announced at 9.30am Thursday at a press conference at Visy Park headed by president Stephen Kernahan, Ratten and club chief executive Greg Swann.

Why do clubs bother with press conferences to make announcements any more? May as well just announce via a press release and if they really feel like it they can have a press conference to field questions/deny that Malthouse has already accepted squillions in non-sequential bills packed in brown paper bags

  2. any chance of a public apology from the MCG over re-starting the Crows song while they chaired Green off? or am I the only one who cared?

Good to see them pitching in for the farce that this year has been for us I guess

  3. What we have here, ladies and gentlemen, is an honest to god FOOTBALLER. Yes, you heard it. A footballer at the MFC. He can mark it, he can kick it AND (now this is key) he will bloody shepherd for you once he gives you the ball.

I'll admit up front that I didn't see today's game (engaging in my own sporting exploits, don't have foxtel), as such I take it as given that he played well today

I love watching him play as much as the rest posting on this thread, but i cannot let the 'good kick' comment through to the keeper. I went to both corporate dome games as well as the tiges match and his kicking was borderline shambolic in all 3. I'm sure it wasn't always this way, and have memories of him being actually quite good by foot (both set shots and around the ground), so he will hopefully turn it aroundsooner rather than later

NB my favourite Howe moment still remains the uncontested hanger over nobody in the pocket against the Giants, pure gold.

  4. I love how many people here are talking about this as though it's some kind of moral decision the club has to make between now and the end of the year. Not all posters, but enough to raise an eyebrow.

Truth is, we are terrible enough for the OP scenario to pan out even if we put in 100% every week. And thats a deeply embarrassing state of affairs, injuries or not

  5. My god there is a lot of paranoia out there. This is the story of the week, which is evidently of the slow news variety. Next week it will be something else, and no one will remember

Has been the pattern all year. Footy journos are second only to the political variety in generating their own news, though I'm beginning to wonder about that order...

  6. Kevin Bartlett (mate of Gerard's?) going on with it on SEN now. Patrick Smith all over it. Expect a big article in The Australian tomorrow.

WGAF? let them write their articles, it will come to nothing. the AFL can't do anything about it retrospectively and its not like our image in the wider football world can become much more tarnished than it already is (irrelevant ski chalet owning Old Scotch bloody Range Volvo drivers the lot of us). besides, Patrick Smith is the king of the peanut gallery, and is far more interested in making a strong stand about things rather than what he is in what the stand is actually about

the disappointing thing is that I was actually beginning to begrudgingly respect Brock for the way he was grabbing his last chance and running with it. all respect for him, begrudged or genuine, is once again gone

  7. I think there are one or two blood borne diseases other than HIV, which can be transmitted via cuts or, I don't know, wiping blood on someone.

Yet none of those are the reason that the blood rule was devised. Nor does that render my point invalid if you substitute "HIV/AIDS" with "blood borne diseases". But yes, semantics are easier than real arguments

Glad he got off, thought they'd send a message though

  8. The blood rule is largely a hang up from AIDS/HIV hysteria, when these diseases were less understood than they are now. the risks really aren't that great - vague, poorly written Wikipedia articles notwithstanding (interesting that the sports named are almost all American - land of the free, home of the hysterical)

I'm not saying that there is no risk at all, or condoning the practice of wiping your blood on other people, but unless he was intentionally rubbing his open wound on the open wound of his opponent and/or his mouth, as opposed to on the guys clothing, then it really wasn't dangerous so much as distasteful (if someone did it to me i'd probably give them a whack for their troubles, but then I am a certified sufferer of white line fever ;) )

to put this in the same league as Judd's move which obviously caused Adams a lot of pain and could have caused a serious injury is going way OTT

for the record I reckon Howe will get a week or maybe two, on the grounds of unsportsmanlike conduct/bringing the game into disrepute/whatever you want to call it

  9. I reckon referring to members as "ologists" or "landers" is forumist. Can't we all just be "Melbourne supporters"? :P

touche. I wasn't intentionally painting myself into the 'ologist camp, just noting that while I see plenty of stones cast from the respective boards neither can claim the high ground on personal attacks. here i see more sniping, there i see recurring salvos in long running wars. perhaps the main difference is the weight of numbers

that, and the fact the people here seem to hate Morton more that Dee_Flower hates Rivers ;)

  10. Just a question princess, and if anything it kept the thread near the top of the page so that more people would see it.

Go on and have a sook though.

    You're good at that.

and this is why I can't help but laugh when i read posts from 'landers having a crack at 'ologists for resorting to personal attacks in favour of discussion

the odd barney aside there is far more sniping on these boards IMO

  11. Nibali had mounted a couple of late attacks on the final climb which destroyed the main pack and dropped off the other Sky support riders (massive effort from Rogers) leaving basically Wiggins, Froome, Cadel, TJ and Schleck in an all star chase group. don't think there was any big move that broke Cadel (if there was, the coverage missed it), he just dropped off in the end. TJ dropped off to try and bring him back in touch with Wiggins, but Cadel looked absolutely destroyed and to be honest in the end was probably lucky to only lose the 1 min 20 odd that he did. TJ was looking strong, and it would have been a great opportunity to attack

general apology for probable misspelling of names

  12. At least he is going down swinging and actually trying to create an opening, rather than sitting on chief's wheel and waiting for one. Such a shame that his legs deserted him at the end, was in a prime position with the young fella who looked like he had plenty left in reserve. Given how it played out though I suspect froome would have rained on their parade - he looks in better nick than wiggo!

  13. Even if Cadel gets over a tiring Wiggins (and thats Aussie speculation that doesnt appear on British sites) ...

Not discounting the Aussie coloured glasses we're all wearing, but that works both ways re the British sites ;)

Would like to see a bit more aggression from Evans. 2nd mountain stage in a row with a big voeckler (sp?) attack that he hasn't gone with. Could be a handy partner in crime

  14. Yep, Sky's approach of effectively sacrificing blokes who could otherwise be contenders (certainly stage winners) in their own right to run down any challenge (not just Evans) is looking for all intents and purposes unstoppable. Still ain't over but right now luck looks to be Evans' only chance

  15. didn't stay up last night, disappointed to hear the results this morning. long way back from here, will take a major attack probably with help from a couple of rivals, plus a whole lot of luck. not impossible, but given how strong Sky have looked so far coupled with Chief's domination last night, well...

  16. fellow armchair expert here. interesting comment from Cadel after last night's stage that he is anticipating getting a little help from rivals of previous years looking to make up time. early days still but it would be nice to see someone from BMC going with him on the climbs. Think their young guy tried to go with the attack at the end and got left behind, which is a worry. Having said that he managed last year without the same level of support on the flats let alone the hills, not to mention that monster effort on one of the latter climbs to burn off both Schlecks, you'd reckon that he'd be relatively comfortable with where he is sitting for now

makes tonight all the more important, goes without saying that he will have to keep any loss of time to a minimum

  17. Has anyone out there in 'land used their joint MCC/MFC membership to get into Etihad before? MFC website confirms it can be done, just wondering what the process is given that the lack of a barcode on the card might make it a bit hard to just rock up and scan in

Is it as simple as showing your card at the gate (perhaps accompanied by a flash of leg and a fluttering of the eyelids*), or do we have to go to one of the windows and pick up a ticket?

    * preferably with the assistance of a female companion, lest a savage setting to by the security staff may offend

  18. Good sign for Evans there that he was able to ride past wiggins who couldnt go with despite the extra support he had from his team, surprise finish from froome indeed. Dark horse?

Hopefully BMC can stick around to the pointy end on future climbs, Sky look much stronger

  19. And the MFCSS affecianados line up to push the self destruct button and go sit in the 'wallow' corner.

Yes we lost.. yes it was a hiding dressed up as a contest. We probably didnt have half a team of note, they probably lacked a 1/4.

In reality the care factor for this and any game for rest of year.... about 2/3 of 4/5 of SFA !!

Until we actually have a team where the greater majority of players actually give a toss and have at least 2 of the 3 basest of football skills anything we see served up will in all likely be tripe.

People are lining up to give Neeld a serve. whterh he does turn out to tbe our savious or a nother lemon on the list at the moment he has to play those he thinks have relevance to our future and see what they do as well as take note of those that might think they are dead certs for 2013 come hell or high water...well some have a surprise ahead.

Like cars of old they all needed running in....working out the bugs and fixing them. we cant fix ours til seasons end.

Im now focused on that. That will tell us far more about our futre than anything we saw today.

At least a few people here talk some sense

I would add in response to those that lament our lack of 'spread' (cliche du jour), that it's something that can only come with confidence. Are you seriously telling me that if you spent the day watching your team mates missing targets in the open by 10 metres that you would have the balls to lead off your direct opponent in the hope of receiving an accurate pass, particularly bearing in mind accountability is a non negotiable? Give me a spell. And that is definitely not a knock on Neelds message re: accountability, Bailey couldn't spell the word and we all saw the results on a dark day in Geelong. The number of times today that a single tiger beat us not just in one on ones but two or three on ones is testament to just how far we have to go in our ability to contest for the ball

The skills are awful but we are in far greater need of some confidence. Fortunately the 2nd half of our draw is a bit more conducive to finding some. Still, as per my previous post sending Rivers back to his rightful position to help stem the bleeding at the other end wouldn't hurt

In Neeld we trust. What choice have we got?

  20. Ah. Jaded has arrived. Did you have a pleasant day at the footy, then?

Truth hurts, we were absolutely horrid today. If the tigers could hit the side of a barn we'd have been done by 15 goals, and deserved to be. For a football team we have a truly embarrassing lack of players that can execute that most basic skill of actually kicking the ball

How long are we going to persist with both rivers and garland forward? I'm well aware that the year has been written off for development, and I'm fine with that, but it's no coincidence that since sending the two of them forward, teams have scored at will every time they have sent the ball inside our defensive 50. fwiw I would persist with Judy up forward, but we NEED big rivers down back, especially if like today McDonald and Sellar (who has been much better back than forward) are out. As maligned as Dunn is, at least he can mark and kick a long goal, not to mention provide a bit of forward pressure, and if I see watts line up on another key forward I'm going to scream

And can we please just rest trenners and let him get over whatever injury it is that he's carrying? Poor bloke can hardly move out there. Drop Beamer too while you're at it, no impact when he was subbed on

Finally, how pathetic are our supporters? Outnumbered 4:1 at our own home game.

Yeah, suffice to say I didn't have a good day at the footy

  21. Well that was eventful! So long Schlek, well done by Evans and wiggins to stay out of trouble

Shame green edge went missing at the end after doing the hard yards, Sagan is a dead set freak

    Looking forward to tomorrow night

  22. How times have changed... 80's early 90's that's a classic example of a well executed shirt front, now he'll go for 4weeks

More like a classic example of a well executed cheap shot against a bloke who couldnt see him coming.

There was nothing remotely shirt front about that hit - aside from the fact he got him in the head rather than the chest, he was in mid air when he did it. Would be getting off lightly with 4 IMO
