  1. Yesterday our best long entries into F50 were miss kicks that ended up directed to space, letting Brown and Jackson to run and jump at the ball. Seems like basic footy to kick to space that favours our 200cm forwards and let them jump and use their height.

Every other F50 entry was directed straight at our forwards making it easy for defenders to pick them off.

Also spreading our forwards wouldn’t hurt. The number of times three of the Browns, Jackson and Gawn were standing next to each other was absurd. Even Cox could read where the footy was going to end up, and that’s ridiculous.

I did notice Goody getting stuck into Stafford at three quarter time. Maybe he has run out of patience internally.

  2. Sad for Smith, but I'm glad this happened at training, not half way through the first quarter on Friday night. It makes me think, that if he is not in the selected team, Hunt is the ideal injury sub. He can play at either end of the ground reasonably well, without being brilliant and could hold down a wing if one of our midfielders went down and Brayshaw was needed in the middle.

Teams up - but to save you time - Weid, Hibbo, Chandler, AVB, Jordan, Melk, and maybe Daw must be travelling with us as not named.

The VFL concept is surely broken. Most of the guys above have played three games since May 23rd. How can they stay match fit over that period, let alone find some form.

And now they will be travelling for three weeks with no games. For the apparent elite sporting competition in Australia this is embarrassing.

And before anyone jumps in with the COVID card, I get it, but it’s not as though COVID is an unexpected issue for this season.

  4. I hope the coaches are analysing our set up. Because we play such a full on team defence, every time we won back the ball on Saturday all of our forwards were 75 meters from goal at best, stopping all momentum and chance of finding any space inside forward 50.

Ben Brown in the man to go no further than CHF and the push forward hard as soon we create a turn over. I’d hate to be defending him one on one in space.

The other side of this is Kozzie needs to sprint forward as soon as we create a turn over. Using his pace to find space or get front and centre of Brown in a marking contest.

  5. Last year when he was the number one forward, and Jackson was two, his marking was border-line elite. As soon as Jackson was injured and Tmac came back in his marking fell away. I genuinely feel like he defers to the senior player and doesn't attack marking contests with as much authority when he doesn't feel like he's the main target.

So in short my theory is it is all confidence/self belief, combined with a bit of structural tinkering to separate our key forwards in marking contests.

  6. Guaranteed to upset some, but I rate Mark Howard on Fox. He resists the urge to over commentate, keeping his involvement to the minimum. He also lets the expert commentators give opinion and focusses on play by play calling.

  7. Slightly unrelated,  but how good is it that we don't need to rush our most recent draft picks. I understand Laurie is out of action at the moment, but it is a real luxury to let these young kids develop fully before coming into the seniors, especially after they played very little footy last year. In recent years I feel we've brought a lot of draftees in too soon compromising their growth.

Also, hopefully given they will have had to fully earn a call up they will end valuing the opportunity even more when it comes.

  8. I don't mind the idea of Max spending time forward to preserve his body during a long season. But I see Max and Jackson working in tandem throughout the year, with the club picking and choosing games where Jackson spends longer periods rucking, with Max resting forward. Potentially against teams like the Bulldogs who have younger or undersized ruckmen. This dynamic would change once Brown and Weideman return (which I feel will be closer to the middle of season than the beginning).

I see Daw as a back up swingman option if any more big men go down.

  9. Winning is clearly the only option tonight and any other result should see massive changes to our coaching staff and footy department in general. Having said that there are a few things I wan to see. With the number of coaching and support staff on our books I hope they are working on these or similar things.

I want to see Kossie use his obvious talents to get the basics right. None of the of the hollywood tap on's or trying to make too much out of nothing. Just use his pace to hunt, tackle and harass the Dockers defence. Then use his speed to balnance himself before kicking at goal or dishing off.

Our tall forwards need to be smarter. Too often they were spoiling each other last week. Whether that is Preuss or Gawn deep with Weideman floating around the top half of the 50 or a variation on that. Weideman also needs to get back to crashing packs with intensity. He has been reverting back to his timid self the last two rounds.

Viney is the other issue from my perspective. He obviously give his all, but I have never seen a player get tackled so much. He needs to take a leaf out of Oliver's book and use his power to stay taller in traffic, and keep his hands free. He continually drives low through packs, and now that it seems OK  to tackle people by the neck and head,  that strategy doesn't work. He will get pinged every time.

  10. This situation needs another year. May was good when available, Hogan had pre-season issues and his feet have to be a major concern. I watched King several times (including his best game v Carlton) and can't say I was blown away. Don't get me wrong, he might be the A grader some are predicting, but I would say the jury is still out. He only averaged 7 possesions a game and just over a goal, I know he is developing, but there's not much there to get excited about.

  11. The word i have heard is that Goodwin doesn't rate Frost as highly as some on here, and feels his trade value will never by higher. Same source called the Watts and Hogan trades mid season. Doesn't mean he will be traded, but if the deal is right they won't hesitate on moving him on.

Aside from the cluster F that was the Sydney game, we haven't been too far off the mark since the bye round:

Fremantle - good win against a side on a 4 game winning streak (although they were down to 2 men)

Brisbane - good first half. Lost our way in the second half. Who knows what would've happened if Hipwood didn't kick 5 goals in 5 minutes.

Carlton - That win stacks up now, as underwhelming as it was at the time, 40 odd points up at one stage with T Mac kicking 6 goals in 3 qtrs.

W Bulldogs - An 8 point loss against a team that has caught fire since the break is a decent effort. One of the rare games Lever and May played together.

West Coast - Another more than competitive effort against the reigning premiers, as we were in front at 3 qtr time. This performance was better than some of our (rare) wins. Again, Lever and May played together.

St Kilda - Bitterly disappointing performance to lose against what I consider a poor side but we lead with 10 minutes left, before our skills and fitness fell off the cliff. May didn't play.

Richmond - A meritorious first half going into the sheds on even terms. Kept the margin somewhat respectable.

Collingwood - Bitterly disappointing middle 2 quarters however had a rare good last quarter. Inaccuracy cost us dearly in this one as we lost by only 17 points.

    Sydney - A disgrace.

Hopefully next year, the Dogs, WC, St Kilda and Collingwood losses are turned into wins.

I have been thinking this as well.

Also it needs to take into account how deep into our list we were looking to select a team each week. it was amazing we were even competitive when ANB, Wagners x 2, Stretch, JKH, Dunkley, Spargo and Chandler were making up over a quarter of our team over the second half of the season.

At best we could carry two of this type of player but six or seven every week was just too many. The number of times their lack of skill, decision making, strength and experience stopped momentum was massive. And it is not necessarily a knock on these individuals, its simply that when you have so many depth players in the same team it is impossible to hold form for four full quarters.

Not having a functioning forward line after the Carlton game didn't help either.

  13. Just had a look back through the weekly injury reports.

    Stephen May

    Round 4: 2 - 3 weeks

    Round 5: 2 - 4 weeks

    Round 6: 4 weeks

Now I understand the human body is unbelievably complicated, but how does a players recovery go so dramatically  backwards when he is supposedly benefiting from being in an elite sporting environment.

I guess the alternative question is why put an estimated return date on players when the club clearly has no real idea.

  14. I feel as though this draft might be of extra importance for Taylor and his team. Given the numbers he was picking at they have had to get creative and look far and wide.

My take on things, given the state of our list going into to the draft, is if one of the players picked becomes a regular contributor that's a pass, two or three would be a win.

  15. I very much believe we are one of the best three or four teams in the comp. But we can’t win these important games even when we are clearly the better team. The question is why? Poor coaching? Lack of infield leaders? Inexperience? Or have we been so bad for so long we have forgotten how to win a big game?

  16. I know this dangerous and lopsided after a seriously disappointing loss. But i’d be interested to hear people’s thoughts. Which individuals on our developing list have improved this year? Other than those who were injured last year and our recruits. I’m struggling to come up with more than three and they all came off a very low base. ANB, OMac and Harmes.

  17. I am I the only one reading this thread and almost being embarrassed to be a Melbourne member. How can people be calling for Hogan to be dropped. Two weeks ago he was mentioned in almost every expert commentators mid season All Australian teams. He then has two quiet games for the most obvious of reasons. I lost count of the number of times ANB, Jones, Oliver and Petracca kicked the ball on top of or over Hogan's head giving him zero chance. But it seems to be easier to blame Hogan.

Also,  I understand Max Rooke is our forward line coach. Does he need to take some responsibility for McDonald and Hogan being so close together inside fifty on Friday night making the long kicks even more predictable. Surely it was obvious they needed to spread the Port defenders more.

  18. Thought Lewis really struggled again tonight. His time has probably come, but who comes in.

We cant forget Port averaged a full season of experience per player more than us. That’s a massive. It showed in the composure throughout.

Garlett simply has to play next week. It’s obviously every time we play a decent team. Probably could play Spargo as well.

Aha. Thanks for the info. Do you recall we had a Gary Byers played for the Dees in 1961. He killed John Nicholls in the last home and away game. We played Carlton again in the first Semi. This time Nicholls dominated...

I bought Gary's house three or four years ago and met him to go over a few things. His career was definitely before my time, but he is still very much a proud Demon. He saw a demon sticker on my car and we chatted for an hour or so about the Demons and where they were headed. Things were a lot more gloomy back then. Seemed to be a ripping bloke.

I sit half a world away from the Melbourne Football Club but regularly exchange emails with a mate of mine that is much closer to the club. The latest mail says that Hogan is no chance to leave the club at this stage or in the foreseeable future. Watts is a different story. Discussion on a possible trade will only be entertained if we get value for him. Currently, MFC would prefer to keep him on the list and see how he responds.

MFC will look to get in Lever plus a 23-25yo mid to build the list for a real tilt at the flag over the next 4-5 years.

Take this in any way you wish and keep in mind this is a trade rumours board and that is exactly what this is, a rumour.

I have heard very similar things about Watts for the majority of the second half of this season.

My source is third hand so have not posted previously. However putting it together with what you have heard makes me think there's something in it.
