  1. Perhaps it is time for them to change their nickname. Is that the correct definition? "Bombers" has so many negative connotations in this age. I would think that name was adopted to celebrate the destruction of Germany in WW2 by Bomber Command, something that now seems rather less  glorious with the benefit of hindsight. Dresden and all. They should adopt a name that celebrates a profound and unique achievement in the modern age. I propose The Chemists.

Melksham is another I'd consider as midfield depth.  I think he is most valuable to us at half forward, but did some pretty good mid tagging roles for us in 2017.  I'm personally open to Maynard turning out ok as a defensive tagging type midfeilder.  I don't think Harmes will nessasrily remain our go to lock down tagger for ever, because his offensive wepons are so good and it's only a matter of time before the tagger becomes the tagged, in which instance guys like Maynard could fill the hole.

For foward depth, we also would be hoping that Preuss can step up and be an option, though without seeing how he goes, I'm not sure how realistic that is.  AVB also has some fair size to him and could provide a decient marking option inside 50.

The other key forward depth option we have is May, who can take marks and kick goals.  Obviously our first prefferance would be to play him in defense, but with the realitive depth we have down there, I think we may play May forward if it was called for by the circumstances.

Agree. May was a devastating forward as a junior and could be a very effective stop gap forward if disaster struck. Another reason to celebrate his arrival at the club.

Salem only had 1 good game in the midfield - against the Roos, and he played on ball not wing. He's not an elite runner, the wing isn't the spot for him. He was much more consistent when moved to half back against Essendon and I think he'll feature really high in our B+F with a number of games where he did his job perfectly at half back.

Fritsch is the most natural winger on the list IMO. It's just a matter of building his tank and teaching him some stoppage craft. Considering he wasn't in the TAC system or even playing regular at Casey (senior or development) he's come a long way this year and just got tired when asked to play backline late. If he can get his tank to AFL midfield standard whilst building some core strength this summer he could not only back up but go to another level next year.

Agreed and I think the other "natural winger" is Hunt.

  4. May be true. Just reckon that many talented kids find themselves living out the expectations of others. There is this guilt thing of wasted talent. Not a good life if it doesn't suit and these are people with many different interests and abilities. Never a problem for me I must say. Mental health issues are being mentioned more often and perhaps persisting due to this now being seen as a lucrative career choice despite being incompatible with the associated life style is a significant factor. The feeling of being inadequate.

  5. As a young boy with footy talent it's all about how you're going to be an AFL star. The further you go the greater the expectation. It becomes all about SHOULD. What you really are and want becomes submerged beneath the expectation of others. Family pride in your achievements, the admiration of mates, representing the school. Who you really are becomes secondary to the expectation of living up to the responsibility of delivering to an ever increasing number of people who have no understanding or interest in who you really are. You are a vehicle for the self gratification that others gain from their association to you.

You are a brave man Harley both for persisting despite it not being what you want and then having the courage to say enough. I hope ditching this burden leads to a happy and productive life. Best wishes.

  6. TDI,I'm guessing your last job was in the public service not the private sector. I hope PJ is a more attuned to basic market pricipals

Basic market principles dictate that income exceeds expenditure. Merchandise would have been the winner.

Sausages are a fund raiser and clearly more administrative awareness would have helped the volunteers.

Mistakes are a disaster unless attention is applied to make sure they don't happen again.

    Up to you PJ.

  7. Just on the advertising at the Paddock. The sponsor agreements would be based upon exposure across a range of physical and electronic sites.

Preaching to the converted (that have the opportunity to attend training in limited numbers) or hoping for a glimpse from an harassed passing motorist is not going to earn MFC a cent in sponsorship negotiation. Chuck in an extra $1000 (or more or less) on the off chance someone buys a car through you because they were driving on Punt Road and noticed the signs? Really?

Instead all we have is yet more visual pollution.

Personally I very much enjoy the training photos (and many thanks to those who post them) without the background distraction of signage.
