Talk to Neita about it. He found it often very frustrating because he could not always be involved.
From ground level late in the game it would be hard to see the whole ground unless you watch the scoreboard.
Points to take into account before the final decision.
Deep in defence is very different to deep in attack.

I never liked this from the beginning. His latent knee problems resurfaced uncomfortably soon after the start of the GWS rumours despite reports he was training like a gun immediately beforehand. The rumours and his dicky knee tracked a parallel course for the remainder of the season. Despite the occasional bandage and icepack he never moved or looked like he carried an injury in his few games with us last season. Then he signs the biggest ever AFL contract despite having a season ruined by injury with associated poor form and diminished skills. All too much to believe unless I like to feel gullible.
Doesn't explain why he's been in rehab with GWS...
-
Totally agree, but i think it is very strange that a chronic dodgy knee that missed half our season is now setting a seriously good time within months.
Don't you recall that he was burning up the track last preseason, then after the intraclub match didn't surface again for some time?
His knee issue means he can't handle high loads on it - he's destined to be pulled and held back for the rest of his career.

I think being in backline provides you with an advantage as captain, in terms of organising your "troops" and seeing the play develop.
You can see where your attack is breaking down and/or where the opposition may be getting on top in the midfield, aiding in making real-time adjustments.

Believe DreamTeam is live Feb 1, Supercoach tends to be in line, however i havent seen confirmation.
If you have an account from last year and you bought the stats package (supercoach gold) then you have a team picker already.
They're both run by the same company, so you'd expect them to go online simultaneously.
-
Yeah, not sure if that will happen either. But that's your opinion.
It is.
We'll have to wait and see.

Don't really care what other clubs do....i just remember David Neitz saying that sitting in the goal square was not ideal for captaincy, particularly when the side was being challenged.
Maybe you should - Neitz may have been a great player, but he never won a flag...
And it's an irrelevant comparison anyway - the game has changed drastically in a relatively short time.
No player sits in the goalsquare in today's game.
-
Yep, you certainly are 'smoking' if you think Garland will be captain.
Smoky for deputy.
-
Says a lot about that dodgy knee doesn't it....3 km's is a long way....
It says nothing.
Not sure what you're trying to read into it though...

Maxwell ? Harley ? Glass ?
Captains of some of the best teams in the AFL in recent seasons...
-
Not that I think an AFL captain needs to be a genius but insert Chip Frawley here.
My favourite player by far, but I have to agree.
Grimes, with Trengove deputy.
Garland a smoky.

I'd expect to see Garland elevated to the leadership group, too.
-
Geez, Grimes is courageous and everything but I don't exactly want him showing how to switch play deep in the backline. Once he fixes up his brain fades then i'm all for it.
.
This type of out-dated and over-exaggerated group think is embarrassing.

Ok, I suppose the comment about "interviews" threw me... but I would contend that onfield barking instructions/giving encouragement to players he is comfortable with and knows intimately (not in the biblical sense), is a very different situation than having to speak into a microphone and even speak casually with someone you aren't familiar with.
I think I once stated a long time ago in a similar thread, that appointing Moloney would probably see him becoming far more focused as being a Dees supporter as a child, this would no doubt have been a lifelong dream... I know that applies to others as well (Grime?) but Moloney strikes me as someone who would benefit from the added pressure rather than buckle as Green seems to have done.
I see what you're saying, but I really see the captain's role as being a conduit between the coach and the playing group.
The captain's most important role is to communicate to the players as a group and as individuals, and convince them to buy-in to the coach's gameplan.
They also need to be able to intelligently interpret feedback and then choose the best course of action.
Listening is a very important skill for them to have.
Communication and decision-making just aren't Moloney's strong suit.
There's a lot more to leadership than fire & brimstone.

Honest call - love Jones dearly but honest call.
I love Moloney, but Jones is a mental giant in comparison!
That's why I say no to both those options.

What is this obsession people have with media performance? I really don't care about how he presents himself in interviews as long as he is getting the message across to his team mates on the field of play and at training. I'm sure that he would be "groomed" if the club wanted him to be captain and were concerned about such things as media performance.
I'm not talking about media performance - I'm more concerned with how he articulates his thoughts, gets points across and absorbs what other people say.
Instead, maybe I should have asked - ever spoken to him in person?
-
From what I have seen of him, he seems to be very vocal and he certainly leads by example - he also has a 100% record as captain - in Shanghai ;-)
I'm not sure being vocal is quite the same thing.
Ever seen an interview with him?

Ambitious!

I still believe that if it isn't Green it will most likely be Moloney with Jones as VC. I doubt Neeld would be so immovable as to believe that Moloney's single indiscretion would preclude him from the captaincy... in fact I would think he would view Moloney's resolve to improve himself post-incident, that it may even improve Moloney's chances. If not Jones, then I would not be at all surprised to see Rivers fill the VC position.
Considering communication is such a key element to the captaincy, do you really think Moloney is the best choice..?
-
I think Green will struggle because he'll no longer be a major target in the forward line.
I've not looked at stats, but my general feel is that few of Green's goals come from general play - most come from a lead, mark and set shot.
I think we'll be kicking long to tall targets frequently, limiting his ability to impact on the scoreboard.
I might be wrong, but I don't think of Green as a particularly adept crumber.
-
I wouldn't jump the gun over a Jay Clark gut-feel, but I think Grimes should and will be captain.
Jones and/or Trengove as vice.
-
Remember when Yze wore the 3/4 length sleeves? I was right into that but then the AFL banned it. Shame.
Yet it's all the rage in the international rules series.........
I'm sure you'd get away with it, if you had a bit of strategic taping

Take a footy home and practice kicking on his right foot in his back yard.
Putting extra loads on his right leg, against the wishes of Misson?
My understanding is that it's down to fine science and these things are carefully measured...
-
Nasher, are you for real?
Nit picking - Looking for small or unimportant errors or faults, esp. in order to criticize unnecessarily.
IMO the part of the training report wasnt critical to begin with, so even bothing to post about the error is nit picking. And taking it further, E25 could have just said, "who did you mean by this?" or "we dont have a Johnston on the list". However he chose to list out every person with the name similar to Johnston who have played in the last 5 or so years, to make the error seem all the more silly.
i'll stand by my comment
Stand by it if you wish, but I was merely trying to clarify who he meant.
I was actually wracking my brain to figure out which Johnstone I'd forgotten.
In the end I even tried to help him out, in case there'd been some mistaken identity due to the hair colour...
Anyway, thanks to all who reported.
I was hoping to go on Friday, but the boys have time trials at Visy Park on Friday iirc.
