  1. Was just about to post the same thing. I would 100% keep him if there is a chance we can. But I suspect he is going to want to play more senior football than he is likely to play with us next season if Brown and tmac are not injured. So he is likely to want out. His potential sweetens the pot a bit but I don't think his record is such that he has much trade value.
  2. PSA. Maxy just about to do his fortnightly slot on rsn.

  4. Way too much of that peanut darcy
  5. Agree with every comment. Reciting ststs isn't analysis. Lazy Montagna uses them to stats to illustrate an observation he is making. I rarely watch any of the afl video shows. But watched the round previrw daisy does this week. She was talking about the dogs decline. Fantastic. Intersting. And above all informative. Which is what you want.
  6. One of my favourite shows. But only because of montagna. I love his analysis and ability to explain it. One example tonight was matching their extra at the stoppage in the first half (which is something we have only done once i think). And then going back to no extra in the second hslf. Brilliant coaching he said. King is totally random. Mixes some genuinely interesting points with bizarre bulltish. What the hell was king on about when talking up the cats? Sure they were brilliant in that 15 minute patch. But montagna is right we had the better of the rest of the match. And we matched that 9 goal run, with 8 unanwered goals to win the game. They had their 3 talls up and firing. Perfect conditions. And in a must win game they could only manage two goals after half time. Two. Where is the critique of that dismal effort? Or the acknowledgement of how brilliant our defence was. And where was his critique of their three most senior players - dangerfield, sellwood and Hawkins. None had any impact in the last quarter. Danger didnt have a possession! Star power indeed. Their controlled kicking style gets it done in the home and away season. As demonstrated by how phenomenal their home and away record is under scott - who i agree with King is a terrific coach. (albeit bolsterd by the incredible home ground advantage they are gifted on a stupidly narrow ground they get to train on - are they the only club who get to train on the ground they play home games on?) But as their finals record shows it simply does not hold up in finals. When we turned the wick up in the last quarter to finals like intensity their game style fell apart. They were desperately trying to play tempo and control the ball. We simply didn't let them. We have beaten them twice this season. The first time we were clearly the better side, despite losing may early. Tbeir chip mark style wasn't up to it. And in this game tbey had a 44 point lead with 7 minutes to go in the third quarter. On their home ground. And we won. And if we play them again we will beat them again. We are a better team.
  7. I thought you went to bed at half time!
  8. @Lord Nev i was wrong about smith's role and you were right. Not even a hint of playing the hunt overlap run role. Ad you suggested he still ran off a bit but really played as a key tall defender. Took Rohan, Cameron and even danger at times. Played them all pretty tight too. He makes me nervous one on one, but to be fair didn't lose many contests. Beat danger brilliantly on one occasion when he found himself isolated on him (that hit forward along the ground). He has some toe and physically look different from a couple of years back. Its an interesting move actually because all the contenders have at least three genuine talle in their forward line, including us. Smith taking one of them means lever can play his intercept role.
  9. I'd add the replay showed that we were on top in that second, until about half way throught it. They started to get on top in clearnces and contested ball, but even after they got a goal in front our pressure was right up there. Then it was four minutes of madness where we couldn't stop them winning it straight out of the centre- and they had so much space goal side of the bounce.
  10. The afl site will have full replay up today. No registration or fees required
  11. Brilliant. He was in tears. And so was I. And I loved how at the end he thanked them for having him. And then before the team sung the song, and they realised they needed mask (which might have been tracc?l he was the one tbst grabbed a bag of them and handed them out. All class.
  12. We took the red pill. And the blue one.
  13. Agree. That said I think it helps that there is a lot to play for in this game. The loser plays port at home. And port is the only team who will be able to play at their home ground in front of their fans. This should help avoid the situation of player subconsciously holding back, which might be a risk if it was more of a dead rubber.
  14. What a horrible match. Both teams are playing terribly. And each teams key vulnerabilities are being exsposed: The dogs reliance on lots of quick handballs to get it away from stoppages and chain it forward- pressure stuffs it up And the ports one dimensional and old fashion reliance on kicking it to a immobile full forward
  15. You're right Nev, i agree he didn't play Hunts role. So lets leave that element My main point, which i appreciate you don't agree with, is I think Smith will play Hunt's role from here on in. Perhaps with some tweaks that takes advantage of Smith's skill set - for example picking up a roaming tall like Thilthorpe or Cameron, running off them when he gets a chance and getting across to impact marking contests with his speed and leap. The example i highlighted of the scoring shot Smith set up is evidence of his ability and willingness to run the lines and play the overlap running role Hunt plays. And in any case we will know soon enough what role they are asking Smith to play, so yes, lets move on.
  16. Yep, that is true. Which is to be expected given he was playing May's role and was man on man on Himmelburg. After Himmelburg came off the vison suggests he picked up Thilthorpe. In that role he got up well the ground, albeit tracking Thilthorpe and the (extended) vison shows him spoiling three times in the first quarter up on our half forward flank. Involvements that do not not get shown on a heat map. Definitely no run and carry in the first half? I must be seeing things: Thirty seconds into the second quarter Smith comes out and spoils an inside 50 kick aprox 40 metres out from the Crows goal. It spills to Nibbler, who kicks short to Tracc in the centre square. Smith is running hard forward tracking the ball, which tracc immediately handballs to Spargo, who in turn handballs to Smith. Smith, who started the chain inside the crows 50 metre, had run hard enough to get in front of the ball when he receives it on our half forward flank, despite the ball having been in constant motion. Smith handballs back to Spargo, who kicks it inside 50 to Fritter who then kicks to a Oliver to set up a shot at goal. Of course Oliver misses it. Eddie on the mike: 'there he goes again, Smith has run from run from full back to half forward as the link man'

  18. With no possessions, not much carry that's for sure. But he might still have been providing the run Hunt provides. Just like Gus still played as a winger running up and down the wing in the first half despite getting only two possessions. I'm guessing his first half heat map suggested he stayed in one spot for the first half. I feel the need for some AFL Stats pro vison! Maybe Smith had some second half up the ground involvements that might bolster my case!
  19. I'm not. At least not now. As i noted in the post you quoted, the heat map you put up convinced me he played may's role, which is why i said smith's map 'does show he played deep and in mays role. At least in the first half' There is so no data on the heat map where Smith ran in the second half as he didn't get a possession
  20. Fair points about the heat maps. And smith's does show he played deep and in mays role. At least in the first half. However heat maps can be deceptive. For one thing, they only show where a player got their possessions, not where they run to. GPS numbers would give a better idea of how much running a players does. Smith only had 9 possessions in the crows game, almost all in the first half and many of them when he was manning Himmelburg. Once Himmelburg went off Smith was released and played higher up the ground, albeit got few possessions (so not evident on the heat map) In the gc game hunt had 19 possessions. So his heat map demonstrates how he gets up the ground. I'm not sure why you say Smith has not played the hunt role in the vfl. If you have kayo, have a look at the last vfl game. Against Werribee Smith had 19 possessions. And if there was a heat map available it would look very much the same as the hunts one in the gc game. But we will soon see. Dazzler has made the suggestion he might play on Cameron, which makes sense. He has the pace to go with him and Cameron gets up the ground a lot. So Smith can mark Cameron AND provide overlap run and carry and push up the ground. And have the pace to get back into defence.
