  1. The piece in The Age makes it clear what happened. Aussie was supposed to see the surgeon who operated on his ankle on October 10, he didn't show up. He did not come to training yesterday, he is still up in the NT. Aussie sacked the MFC, that's what's happened. So the club had no choice.

  2. From what I have been told, there is a view inside the club that Bailey has been a good development coach but that we need someone new to move us into the new phase and win a Premiership. I have been told by one source that the club has spoken to Roos and Clarkson. Roos has told them he is not interested in coming back as a coach, no word on Clarkson.

  3. I don'tknow if this has been already posted, but I just jumped onto Nathan's website for a bit of gander, and he has written a very moving piece on his Tiwi experience - http://www.nathanjones.com.au/ Tiwi Times.

Our football club does a hell of a lot right these days.

It's a great read and made me feel proud to be part of this great club. The MFC is being really innovative with the way it deals with indigenous players, way ahead of the rest. We should all be proud

  5. GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY - A GIANT COMPROMISE by Whispering Jack

The announcement of the name of the new AFL franchise - the Greater Western Sydney Giants - has been met in football circles by a mixture of dismay and derision.

Among the main arguments of those who oppose the name are that the "Giants" is an unoriginal moniker and that it's "too American"; that it fails to adequately reflect the indigenous nature of the region where the new franchise is located.

I agree, and that is why I suggest a compromise that will please everybody.

Let's call them the Greater Western Sydney Giant Wombats!

The Giant Wombat roamed the region long before the white man invaded its shores bringing to the land such alien foods as battered saveloys and chiko rolls and unusual modes of vehicular travel like the Leyland P76.

According to wikipedia, the "Diprotodon, or the Giant Wombat, or the Rhinoceros Wombat, was the largest known marsupial that ever lived. Along with many other members of a group of unusual species collectively called the 'Australian megafauna', it may have existed from 1.6 million years ago until about 40,000 years ago."

    Now imagine that!

A living species older than Kevin Sheedy roaming the environs of Blacktown (and the animal even looks like Sheeds)!

The connection between the new outfit, the Giant Wombat and the Western Sydney region could even be exploited to popularise our sport in a place where, let's face it, nobody gives a wombat's arse about our game.

I'm alluding, of course, to reviving the symbol of the area made popular by Sydney icons Roy and HG during the 2000 Olympic Games - Fatso the Fat-Arsed Wombat.

Now, Fatso is a Giant Wombat if there ever was one! I miss him and I have no doubt that millions of Sydneysiders do as well.

Who could ever forget one of the great moments of Australian sporting history when Fatso, the three official Olympic mascots, and the Boxing Kangaroo took part in that enthralling diving contest?

And let's not forget that a statue of Fatso stands in the heartland of the Western Sydney area at Olympic Park.

I don't much like the new jumper either. No red head could ever consider playing in that gear so what are they going to do about our heroic young men who go by the name of "Bluey"?

I also think they have the graphics all wrong with that ridiculously contorted letter "G". A simple "W" for wombat would suffice or, even better, they could replace the letter with a facsimile of Fatso's face, thereby reprising the now forgotten national heritage of placing our local marsupials on guernseys started so many years ago by the late Christopher Skase at the Brisbane Bears.

    So please Andrew Demetriou.

You strike me as a fair minded person who understands the spirit of compromise. Make them change the name to the Greater Western Sydney Giant Wombats!

Atually I like how Roy and HG describe them: the Great Western WSydney Arbibs

  6. Leaving doesn't worry me.

The manner in which Bruce had done it is more of an issue for me.

To leave it so long, I'm sure it must have been a hard decision, but he also must've had the naiive belief that the club would cave to his demands eventually.

It may be a case that the hawks (or someone else) came into the picture late, after trade week, offering what was previously not available to him.

Surely he didn't need to leave the decision until yesterday, though.

Either that, or he really doesn't care about the club all that much (which, honestly, I find hard to believe).

The bottom line is this: Bruce did not figure in our long term plans, given that we're looking at Premierships from 2013 and beyond. At his age, and with the talent on our list, how could anyone be guaranteed a game every week. The club did the right thing.

  7. I am surprised that there has been little if any comment on the first trade in this post.

Were we to get A(nother) Davey for Maric surely we would grab it with both hands.

If not IMO Maric will probably just be delisted.

The word is that Maric wants out. I have been told by Club sources that he can't see himself getting a run in the seniors with the likes of Jetta and Aussie filling the role. I think a trade for Maric looks likely

  8. Now this is simply to ask the question. It's been reported widely Cameron has been feted by other clubs including GC. He's none too happy with the handling of good mate Junior. Essentially he's up for grabs. Dees only to offer him one year deal. Will he stay ?

The word around the traps is that GC has offered him two years plus $450,000 more than what Melbourne is offering. The only problem for Bruce is that he hates flying, which he would be doing a lot of if he went to the GC. And then he has to think about what he does after he retires. Would he better staying here. All this is in the mix, I've been told

  9. For those that don't know quote, it goes something like:

Reports of my trading have been widely exaggerated.

He twittered that many years ago...

Apparently it's not happening. The one to watch out for is Cameron Bruce. My mail is Gold Coast has offered him three years plus $450,000 more than what he's getting now. Melbourne is offering two years. On the other hand, the word is that Bruce hates flying which he'd be doing all the time playing for Gold Coast. Watch this space

  10. A few real positives tonight - T. Scully, J. Trengove, J. Grimes, J. mckenzie, C. Bartram all outstanding tonight

Not to be outdone though - had a chat with big Max at half time - reckons he's on track to start playing in 4 weeks. Hope for our sake this is correct. Can't wait to see the GIANT in action :-)

It's exciting but let's not get carried away. Schwab says the big fellas take about five years to develop. Take a look at how long it took them to get Jamar up to a high standard. Gawn should be good, but we will probably have to wait a few years.

  11. With our backline coming together nicely I wonder whether Rivers could play forward? I like him as a player, great hands, but seems to be a little slow to be the damaging rebounding player that we need off the flank? Although he is great loose in defense or 3rd man up could he be a target in the forward line or even a lead a centre half forward?

Rivers' great strength has always been his ability to read the play. That's why we always see him appearing out of nowhere to take a mark, he would be a hard player to tag. I agree with you. As our backline develops, we can free him up for the forward line where he could do some serious damage

  12. Spot on DJ. People seem to forget that it takes years and years to develop big players. It wasn't that many years ago that people were writing off Jamar. Spencer is still raw but he shows plenty of promise and aggro. He will grow into the role, just as Jamar did

Should we really run Jamar into the ground for the remainder of the season when looking at the bigger picture, ie - 2011/2012 and onwards? I think this needs to be part of the argument as the Sylvia's/Miller's that have chopped out Russian have struggled.

Big Spence has a long long way to go, but IMO there is some upside to him. It was mentioned how unco Cox was early in his career (I guess this was why he was rookie listed!) but look at him now.

The ball seems to find him a bit, like a 3rd man bowler trying to avoid a catch in front of Bay 13 maybe! But I reckon he could get better. It would not be good if Russian went missing and Spence carried the load.

We might even sneak a peak at Fitpatrick late in the year?

  13. Cheers for the updates everyone..

Casey FM didnt even get near connecting, to know if the game was on radio or not!

Hope its not back to last years pathetic worst where if more than 3 people tried to tune in at once the server shat itself..

Yeah I had problems with the server too. After the first quarter, there was no connection. Thanks KC and all of you for the updates, it's been much appeciated.
