  1. Apologies in advance for being boring and sensible, but I would be pretty pleased if we didn't even attend Trade Week. 2011 is not our Top 4/Premiership contender year and no single player we could conceiveably pick up in a trade can change that. Equally, I don't believe we have any expendable players of sufficient quality to attract a high draft pick. I believe we should top up our list with a couple of draft picks and a fresh rookie list then let the kids show us how our list is really shaping. Once we're a finals team, then we can look to fill any gaps via trade.

  2. One James Hird was drafted in the pick-70's...

Ugh... This old chestnut. Just because there has been 1 fairytale story of a player being drafted late turning into a superstar is not an argument that every player taken at the bottom of the draft will also be a good player.

Drafting, talent identification and player development is in a different stratosphere to what it was 20 years ago when Hird arrived.

If Dylan's brother wasn't a good player this conversation would never have even begun. It's as simple as that. Kyle Hardingham was taken 5 picks later than Dylan Grimes and has actually displayed some real ability as a strong marking forward. Why isn't there a thread about him???? It's illogical romanticism.

  3. Bahahahahahahaha

    Surely you're not serious?!

What club would write a captaincy clause into a player's contract?

    Absurd.

If true, the only thing that could conceivably be would be a performance-based bonus for being awarded the captaincy.

Not sure any player runs around discussing the ins and outs of his contract in public.

That's not entirely fair Keyser. There absolutely was talk about the captaincy being written into Davey's contract.

Of course, all that talk was coming from people who haven't the faintest idea how footy clubs are run and what is included in contracts.

  4. QUESTION: If one of Miller or Bell go to GC, do we still have 1 player outstanding on our list that GC may "pinch" seeing (as we delisted both Bell and Miller)??

    Yes & no.

GC can actually take more than one player per club with their "free agency" type arrangement with the other club's permission. So if they wanted both Miller & Bell then we would obviously give our blessing and be compensated for both.

However, outside of taking either of these players through the "free agency" type arrangement they could wait to pick them up in the draft. I doubt they would want to waste draft picks when they needn't so if either or both of these players goes to GC, we will likely receive compensation.

  5. How many games has Bail played at Casey. I thought he had already qualified. If not he has played 4- therefore return to Casey this week.

That list is from the VFL website.

This week is the first week of VFL Finals. If they're not on that list, they're not playing at Casey this week.

  6. I was disturbed when I read in the Age this morning that Miller would not be part of the Scorpions finals team. How can that be. After having put in for the team for practically the whole year and not be part of a possible grand final. If the Club has decided that I think it just stinks. I for one would hope that the Club is not so mean spirited and short sighted that it would not include one of the better forwards of the VFL in the finals campaign. I know, we all know that he is not part of the Club's future but allow him to play. I would have thought that a successful finals campaign would be more important to the MFC/Casey Scorpions ongoing relationship and despite Miller's not being seen as good enough to be an AFL player he has as all would agree had a great year as forward spearhead at the Scorpions.

Of course all this means nothing if it was Miller's choice not to play. If that is the case, well he can take his petulance somewhere else.

I am also concerned that could this mean that they maybe giving Newton ANOTHER CHANCE. Oh please NOOOOOOOO

    Quite the contrary.

SEN reported this morning via Chris Connolly that Brad was leaning towards giving up his farewell game with the Dees on Sunday so that he could play for Casey. Says it all about the kind of bloke he is really.

Also reported that Guy McKenna had indicated interest in him. It'll kill me to see him play well against us, but he is one of the all-time great blokes of our Club so I hope he gets another chance.

  7. Here's the list:

Daniel Bell, Kyle Cheney, Jack Fitzpatrick, Danny Hughes, Paul Johnson, Addam Maric, Tom McNamara, Brad Miller, Michael Newton, James Strauss, Austin Wonaemirri

It's a pretty disappointing list really. I was expecting a fleet of kids being able to play together and get finals experience as a group, but I'd see us delisting 6/11 of those players. Puts a pretty significant dent in Casey's finals chances I'd have thought. Pity.

  8. In all seriousness, i've been following this club for over 40 years. I'd like to see them win a flag before I die. Chronic pain punctuated with fleeting pleasure in this time. I used to think every year we are only a few seasons away from a win. Then the years mount, 10, 20 of shame for the club and in 87 after 23 years, wow! maybe. Sure we will win one soon. No, maybe next year, then the next and the next and the next then 10 years later hope bubbles again but no. A few years later we run into the Bombers. Another 10 years and more misery we are now here. Everything looks promising again. But the playing culture remains the same. I may not get to see the Demons next flag but you young ones be prepared to wait 40 years or maybe never for your chance. It's not going to happen until the team changes it culture and play winning effort football every effing week of the season.

    You're dead right.

We should try to win more games.

I hope Dean Bailey sees this.

  9. I'm just agreeing we are absolute shite when when travel and I'm sick of hearing the developing side excuse touted for our recent no shows interstate or elsewhere for a failure to have a red hot go. Aways has been the problem and seems it always will be if we keep on accepting this. Wheres the effing inner soul in this club? Whats your opinion BTW?

I don't like it when we lose either.

I too would prefer it if we won each week.

Can we rename the thread, "I like it when we win and don't like it when we lose"???

  10. Thanks very much for that, looks like the SCG is the only ground with perhaps acceptable win levels. Marrara and Stadium Australia too few games there. Granted that in the 24 years of interstate history there has been 9 interstate premierships and nearly the same for interstate grand final losers. Improvement interstate is required or else we'll never be any good.

This issue is long recognised by the footy dept and they've been trying to work on it already this season as illustrated by the 'travel' game to Geelong.

There's no magic formula to apply here, they just have to keep working away at it until they improve.

  11. I thought it was a strange and unusual comment for a MFC Assistant/ VFL Coach to make. Not the best aveneue of disclosure unless of course Miller has been advised and the player already know.

Miller had already been advised, and I highly doubt he was keeping the news to himself. But on Brad's behalf, I would imagine the players would not appreciate the news being broken in this fashion.

  12. Really? Of course they would be, but it wouldn't have anything to do with how it was done, more the fact that they wont be playing alongside him next year. Sam Blease even made a similar comment on Twitter about how it was a shame he didn't get to play in the same team as him.

I just hope the kids we have got realise that they have to make the most of their opportunity, because this AFL caper is a bloody tough business. Once Watts, Scully, Trengove and co mature, our Club will not except inconsistencies, and will be ruthless where required. They are in a situation now where they can learn that and to some degree get away with it (or the sake of getting games in to them), but that attitude wont last forever.

They're not going to revolt over it, but it would be a mistake to think they have taken it well. In isolation, it wasn't all that bad given the circumstances, but to have two bad things happen in quick succession tends to amplify the impact of both events.

  13. I agree with this but Melbourne's record overall interstate has been sub par since WC came into the comp and even in their good years. Of course we've been beaten by powerhouses in that time. If anyone can post the full list of stats of interstate games it would be great.

    Marrara Oval Win 100%

    Stadium Australia Win 100%

    SCG Win 41.67%

    GABBA Win 35.29%

    Carrara Win 33.33%

    Subiaco Win 29.63%

    Manuka Oval Win 25.00%

    Football Park Win 17.86%

    W.A.C.A Ground Win 14.29%

    North Hobart Win 0.00%

  14. You don't "announce" the delisting of a player in the leadership group via the Development/VFL Coach chatting with reporters after a game against Werribee.

This is a really bad look and I hope the playing group don't react as badly as they would be justified in doing. They were already stinging from their captain being pushed, they didn't need to see this days later.

  15. Well I certainly wouldn't want to be branded an "apologist" so here is the only sensible solution to the problem of the youngest list in the AFL not being undefeated that I can imagine:

    SACK BAILEY!!!!

    SACK CONNOLLY!!!!

    SACK SCHWAB!!!!

    SACK STYNES!!!!!

    DELIST ALL 46 PLAYERS!!!!

    Will that do the trick???

  16. Good on ya posters for saying it as it is.However, I strongly suggest you also voice your concerns to :[email protected] -attention Jennifer Watts whom also gets emotional but makes sure the message gets passed on.

Yeah, because the chief concern of the Marketing & Comms Manager is how the players perform at AAMI Stadium and once she is informed that the fans of the team actually don't like losing, she'll mention that at the next meeting with the football department and everything will change.
