They’re off in the battle between the top of the ladder Casey Demons and last placed and Northern Bullants. Kade Chandler is in the team so he made the red eye from Perth and the Casey team appears as selected. Mitch Brown gets the ball off a pack and snaps truly the Demons’ first.

With a little over an hour to go before today’s game, it’s worthwhile mentioning that Casey’s closest rival Southport is playing Collingwood at Victoria Park and is getting a bit of a touch up at half time. Needless to say that it’s highly likely that the Demons are going to finish on top of the ladder and in doing so will provide useful back up to the AFL team’s finals campaign. In addition, this means that a few of the clubs younger brigade should get some valuable finals experience to assist with their development. The first round of the VFL finals are four weeks away and, although he’s listed as being still 6 to 7 weeks away, there are reports that we’ll see Tom McDonald in action with Casey at around this time. Watch this space.

I think it’s worthwhile contributing to the debate since I have watched a bit of Andrew’s play over the season thanks to the streaming of games on the afl site and more particularly, the Casey v Gold Coast game played a month ago at the Ausworld Centre on the Gold Coast. He has been played mostly at CHB which suits a straight ahead game and with his height in that position, a feature has been his marking. His year began well with that early game vs Carlton his best. He picked up more than 20 touches in a thrashing but the game was played a lot in his half of the ground. Since then, his form has been no better than middle of the road with some mediocre performances. In the game vs Casey, he was average at best and my note were that if he doesn’t fill out he’ll be destroyed by someone. Took some good marks, showed some good second efforts but nothing to get excited about. He was well beaten last week - his opponent kicked four goals. He doesn’t stop trying but I was surprised that he’s been selected this early. As WJ alluded, it’s probably because the game is against West Coast - I couldn’t see him picked against the Cats for instance. Still, like all here, I wish him luck.

Andy Moniz-Wakefield goals at the 30 minute mark and the Demons are back to 14 points in front.

The game has started with conditions greasy under cloudy threatening skies. The Demons have made a few changes as a result of the withdrawal of Ben Brown and his replacement with Sam Weideman. Toby Bedford and Adam Tomlinson have been held back for tonight’s game. for our Demons today – Riley Baldi, Bryce Milford and Aidan Quigley are the replacements. Both teams are struggling to open the scoring with the Bulldogs favoured by the breeze.

You can already scratch Sam Weideman who has gone up to the MFC team as a replacement for Ben Brown (knee soreness). Jayden Hunt is now one of the emergencies.
