  1. Am I the only one that hates the term "war chest"?
  2. For what it's worth I really only had you in mind for the last paragraph. For the first two I had in my focus the amazing contributions from the likes of McQueen and wizardofoz. Quoting is way too much effort. Anyway, I think this is one of the types of situation free agency is designed to engineer; a player who doesn't add much to his current side now has an open door in to a club that needs him a lot more without the need to roll the dice in the draft. It's a win for us and the system I think.
  3. Who was the last premiership player we had on our list? Dual premiership player I might add. He's an exemplary character with a strong work ethic coming out of the best team in the current era. He got overtaken by young guns like Christiansen and Motlop - no shame there. He will play a role where our previous options were Davey and Bennell, and he's proven he can play that role at Flag grade. We're desperate for senior players with leadership as we seem to be in a permanent spiral of our list getting younger. He comes for free. I'm amazed people can't see the upside here. No, he's not Tippett. But if you're looking for that one player who's going to lift us above his shoulders and carry us from our current misery to glory then you're going to be spending the rest of your life disappointed.
  4. Sorry to those who took the time to respond to oli's dribble (particularly Oucher, RGRS and Jordie) but I've deleted the Cook/Menzel comparison and everything that followed - that line of conversation was destroying any possibility of a readable discussion in this thread.
  5. Yes, I despair at the thought of paying pick 4. We throw away the opportunity to get a much needed star for two players who definitely aren't.
  6. Not sure if it's been posted elsewhere, but I heard the complete opposite; he'd been told in no uncertain terms where his game was lacking and where his career was headed, and said he'd rather stay and work his guts out to correct his game than be traded. Gotta love this time of year.
  7. FFS. If this wasn't already ridiculous, it definitely is now.
  8. I agree. It's not being panned that irks me - as others have said there's plenty of reasons to pan us, it's the general way he does it that is irritating.
  9. Wow. Feels like he's been around long enough to be 40.
  10. Ditto. As much as I'd love it, if Rivers and Moloney added up to one golden pick then the system is buggered. It will (or should) be two middle of the road picks.
  11. Not involving Free Agency is surely a con rather than a pro. It means the club they are at have an opportunity to play hardball and force us in to overpaying in terms of draft picks. None of those guys are any sure thing either, there would be a significantly higher level of risk paying for someone like Butcher or Gumbleton than having a proven forward come for next to nothing. And I thought the idea was to increase our competitiveness now. The two options don't have to be mutually exclusive either. There's no reason we can't go after Lynch and Butcher/Gumbleton. Edit: beaten to the punch by Oucher.
  12. Someone younger such as...?
  13. I like the other unfounded rumour better than this unfounded rumour.
  14. He must be thoroughly sick of playing in Grand Finals by now.

  16. Exactly. He said post-match that he got a wakeup call from his teammates mid year. This is his third club and in half way through his 8th season in the system he shows signs that he might finally get it. Even then, my money is on the wheels falling off sooner or later. I don't have a lot of faith in guys who have shown traits of extreme laziness in the past. For every Steve Johnsons who turns it around permanently there's heaps of Adam Heuskes and Travis Johnstones and Nick Davises who just can't sustain the effort for any longer than a year or two.
  17. Same here DOF. This site (and 'ology back in the day) gave me a connection to the club and an opportunity to network with other MFC supporters I'd never had anything like before. I don't think I'd be even a fraction as passionate or active as a supporter if I hadn't had such an opportunity to feed of others passion and support. It's why I like to give back to the site as much as I can.
  18. Mark Thompson resigned too and is in a similar position at Essendon. Wonder why?
  19. Our best defender... who spent half the year as a forward? Chip the Spud. FFS. For every poster with the rose coloured glasses on, there's one with poo coloured glasses on that sees the worst in everything.
  20. What? You're not saying that it's all just wild speculation? I can't believe it. I honestly thought that if it came the internet then it must be true. Thanks for enlightening me. The majority of people contributing in this thread have been around for years and don't need to be told of Nudge's track record. He's almost reached legend status around here these days. Take the rumours for what they're worth and stop assuming that everyone who has bought in to this thread is an idiot.
  21. Your post(s) implied Kennedy left for money, and now that you've been challenged, you've changed your story. You've done exactly what BH reckons I did earlier in the thread
  22. Or draft picks.
  23. Obvious sheet-stirrer is obvious.
  24. Shannon Byrnes? :D
  25. I don't actually think you missed my point, because from what I've read in this thread I don't think what you're saying is very far apart from what I'm saying. Got the money, got the space, use it to improve the list. I'm not trying to defend the numbers I put forward, by the way, I'm trying to dismiss them. I put zero thought in to the numbers I put in that post because I didn't really think it was the point. They were throwaway, but you've run with it. McGlynn, Kennedy, Richards and Shaw were all players that were either on or very close to the scrapheap. They were fringe players at their existing club. The equivalent on our list is James Sellar. Wellingham is obviously not as valuable a player as Mumford, but for the purposes of this discussion he's closer to Mumford - who you agree Sydney overpaid for - than he is to those other guys. I agree with every word of this.
