The 2014 AFL National Draft
Jack this to me is the error of many a thinking both now and the last 10 years. This myth of needing elite. We struggle to put a decent AFL std team on the park because we dont have enough good meat and potatoes let alone any fillet mignon..Kids wont impact a team tomorrow and thats been our folly. Roos will endeavour to ensure kids spend more time learning their craft not less. Any reliance on kids, no matter how elite , will be less. I hope Roos uses both high picks to bring in some good 'decent' players who WILL lift this club quickly. We will still get some fairly lively picks. History suggests theres as much chance anywhere up to 50...and even then some gems appear late. Lets worry less about the cream and more about whats beneath.

if we , just for a moment , put names to the side and just go with intent then I can see many here also think its either a)desirable b) probable that picks will be traded. If we do get the bonus prize ( compo ) and if it is band 1 I still maintain theres a greater benefit this year to re-invent those picks as players able to impact immediately and accompanied by some still handy picks to garner some development youth. We are different from many teams. We arent looking to top up and continue along a well established path we're doing some emergency re-engineering on the fly ....the foundations need fixing and the roof is leaking and the floor's a bit wonky etc All things equal next year we'll still have a decent 1st and 2nd round pick. Right now we need rtr players thats my take

strangely....I've been there....lol.....wasnt all that warm that day from memory to tell the truth its a hop skip and a jump from a YHA I stayed at many many moons ago. I was broke...I made a deal with the manager to trade labour for lodgings ( and food ) I painted thebasement and stairs. A few others caught on to my deal. A certain Mary from Colorado ( funny what you remember ) did it to and decided to thank me . She took me out to dinner..A little cafe at the end of a lonG LONG pier in Halifax. I swear at one moment I was being set up and reminded me of a funny Get Smart episode.. Lapping water, deep fog, boats fog horns etc. quite surreal anyhow sat at table . No chairs matched not the cutlery. She ordered two house specials. Promptly two mugs of tea arrived. Followed by the biggest bowl of hand cut chips.I thought..Cool..Tea and chips...we were both pretty broke after all. Then Then Two plates with half a lobster each... It was the chepaest meal in Halifax...no lie . The lobsters were rejects. bashed shells etc Cafes restaurants wouldnt touch them and so this weird littel cafe bought them for next to nothing. I sent back a telegram ( htas how long ago ) to Dad... In Halifax...stop Broke..stop Forced to eat Lobster....stop please send money.....stop strangely none arrived !!!! LOL ALL TRUE !!

The 2014 AFL National Draft
No its not HH...tfft huh Ironic that names likes Wines are noted There will always be some that do...of course. I don't think it's a stretch to suggest history would have us side with a thinking that goes to the notion its often more like 2-3 seasons before most show where they're heading. We can't keep having the teams age median so low. Cant have games average so low. As long as it is were underdogs and underdone. We need to recruit some ability and experience. ..and now or its a perpetual game of catch up footy and we never will.

This gives us NO immediate divend and for mine just conitnues this notion that kids are the salvation . Thery arent. They are part of a replenishmnet and regrowth but they are NOT the reason you will climb up a ladder. Given a decent fwd set up of sorts next year you dont want to starve them game after game. You need a really effective midfield and some depth to it. . Two more kids who might take anywhere from 2-4 seasons to get really going dont add to it , not in a hurry anyway. By all means get some new young blood but prioritise the recruiting of more Tysons , Vinces, Crosses etc. This immediately steps up the list. trade 3 and 4

Agree with you re Jimmy. Im not having a go at him as such its just there might lay better value for him to return and they win , he wins ,WE win..All happy . Goes with my thinking also that Chips real value sits with his compo. Shiel and Dangerfiled would be amazing pickups...even just to get one keeps the midfield advancing and thats what needs to happen..We need to keep stepping up. My thinking simply revolves around thenotion that many are salivating at the possibility of EARLY picks and I dont hink we'll have them Why ? Roos doesnt work this way and I reckon hes is absolutely right. Reminds me of driving a brand new car out of the lot..Instant mega loss of value... its the same in reverse I reckon with early draft picks...they just arent really worth their hyped up status. Let others go that way and take the beefed up trade and run .
