  1. I do listen to people who know something about football, unfortunately I don't find many on this website that fall into that category.

I'm old enough to have endured that dark ages of the 70's, when I did go to the football and accepted honourable losses, simply because watching Robbie Flower was worth the admittance.

What Hannabal wrote was spot on, but I tend to take the pessimistic view, rather than see things through rose coloured glasses. That's what 27 years of supporting Melbourne does to you.

Yes i too remember the '70's when we never ever played september even though i went to all the Grand Finals....

Bailey has by far the Toughest Job in AFL footy at the Mo. He must be given time. We as Supporters have got to stick Fat, as i doubt any of us would do a better Job.Bailey has had numerous occasions to "lose it" in Public after MFC performances over the last 12 Months, but he has kept it together.

That said I Believe we can TRULY beat Richmond this week & i hope those boys know it to. Dean Baily must demand a win this coming sunday. The team has been training since last October.

I will not accept defeat this week. The Tigers are Mentally weak & we must be tough over 4 Q's

  2. I didn't find that movie offensive, it actually made me laugh, and I'm a woman.

Was it in poor taste? Sure. Was it the most horrible, demeaning thing available freely on the net? Hell no (I'm sure most people here have seen the famous Jizz in my Pants clip, which is just as tasteless!)

If I was a North supporter I'd be pretty [censored] off at the players not for making this silly movie, but for being stupid enough to have North Melbourne logos appearing in nearly every frame and then putting it on YouTube for all to see. It would have [censored] off the sponsors, and in general was an unnecessary distraction.

Given that I couldn't care less about North Melbourne or the stupidity of their players, the overreaction to the whole situation had me wondering just how bored is the media?!

Yes the video was rough, but if a guy is going to watch it and deduct from the video that mistreating women and running them over with a van is OK, then they are a lost cause anyway and are most likely [censored] already.

Aker is 100% right in saying that there are plenty of dirty slappers out there who throw themselves at footballers in the most demeaning way, and they give football-loving women a bad name. It is much more upsetting to me as a women to know that there are girls out there silly enough to put themselves in harms way just for the sake of getting it on with a footballer.

100% correct. The Media is getting worse by the week in how they blow out stories. It has definately got worse since SEN started broadcasting. Stories just Fester & Morph. There is one journo on SEN who drives me insane Matt someone, he is the most unimaginative Journo i have EVER heard (I worked in a newsroom for 10 years way back). Acker was Spot on. The "Death Row" headline was the same. Tasteless & Wrong. One day a coach will suicide & the Herald Sun will be to blame.

  3. I Don't believe the Rubbish spoken about the "Clash" Jumpers. Its all Marketing. There is no clash with Ports Jumper.

This is all designed as a marketing ploy & also to dilute the History of clubs in case the AFL ever decide we must move. To be forced to wear a Clash strip against Port is a disgrace. I shall ring the club.

  4. For Carltank, perhaps going with Judd was the right choice, because they already had the nucleus of a high quality midfield in place. I say perhaps because I still think their backline is a little suspect - in terms of winning a premiership.

For Melbourne, as exciting as it would be to have Judd in the red & blue # 3, what we would have probably traded away to get him may not have suited our aspiration to build a premiership list...and for that you need both class and depth.

Fear not Judd would have Made a Huge Difference to this club particularly with

stynes as the Prez. Anyway i can't think about it too much as i get to Pi$$ed off that he went to Carltank after following G Lyon as a kid....Grr. Judd will regret his decision. (Fingers Crossed!)

  5. Call it what you want. However, reality is Colin is on our list ... like it or lump it.

I just don't feel its beneficial to give up on our players ... sorry I personally just cant do that.

Work on their strengths and try to improve their weaknesses ... will I get it right 100% of the time - No I wont. However, I'll never give up trying.

Think we will have to just agree to disagree on how we should treat our players.

Ps Should add I think this is a nasty trend evolving on gameday (possibly learned from places like this) ... Where people go and abuse and give their players the Bronx cheers ... again sorry I cant do that.

The Reality is he has been on our list for six years. We all want him to do well but how long do you wait? If we are to see a Premiership in the next few years Tough decisions need to be made. Is Colin going to help us win that Flag.... I don't think so. He has been given many chances.

  6. It shall be very interesting to see how many games Fremantle, Richmond & Melbourne win each this year.

Tanking will happen by round 13 i predict (Team selections Early Surgery appointments Taken) Those on the park will continue to play hard But Team Tanking will occur pre Gold Coast.

  7. Disappointed that the thread about Bailey's coaching has been locked. We should be able to openly discuss an issue as vital as whether or not the coach is measuring up to standard. I agree he needs time to develop the team but I also believe that its time to see the development of some tactics and strategies and I don't want to wait 5 years to discover that our coach isn't up to it!

At the moment the forward line is injured or in the classroom learning. What would you do that's different. The clean out at this club should have been done after the 2006 Finals campaign. IE "Good effort Blokes, but that is as far as a lot of you will go" Harsh but True. It wasn't done then, so Bailey is carrying the can for that. At least we are getting Draft Picks before GC & west Syd Ravage the country. Baileys Game plan will be shown in full once the forward line & Midfield are represented properly. I am prepared to be patient for this & next year before i start Yelling!

  8. First time poster here. But long time Demon Fan and member.

Just thought I'd direct all "Bailey Bashers" to an article by Leigh Matthews on AFL.com

Here is what I thought was a key point

"If I had to give a percentage, a successful team is 80 per cent playing ability and 20 per cent what a coach does with them. Of the coach’s contribution, nine tenths is getting the basics right and one tenth would be devising a game plan that maximises your strengths.

The longer I coached the more I became convinced of this fact."

Full article can be viewed here.

    The truth about coaching

Great Article Thanks. This Should be read often by all Melbourne people over the next 5 years. Lethal Coached 3 in a row. Richmond supporters now want Lethal to wave a magic wand & bring Glory to the Tigers. It won't Happen. Bailey is doing a fine job i believe.

  9. I met Sam a couple of times as a kid. Sam was totally Melbourne, one of our legends that other clubs could only envy.

I hope the team plays well in his honor this week (and always) R.I.P. Sam Allica.

  10. Cool He sounds like another Chris Judd type. Great, these are the players we need before Demetrio's Psycho love child GC17 gets to rape & pillage the Draft.

We are the last club to prosper from victoria for the next 10 years. Maybe i can bare the humiliation of this Cold & Bitter year after all.

I still want to win a few games this year, we must to keep the kids & sponsors interested. A fine balancing act.

  11. None of the Above. (Morton Maybe) Personally Green should have it. I love junior but i fear the game has passed him by. I wish he was an assistant coach this year.

Hopefully Mr Watts will be our next long term Captain.

  12. After Watching all of yesterday's game i really hope we beat Richmond. They are a joke. The Bulldogs were awful as well. Richmond had no leadership or structure after the first Q. If we can kick to Targets and play to the standard of our second half against the Power we are a big show. Drop Sylvia immediately-He just doesn't care.

Can you imagine the papers next week if The Tigers Lose? Bring it on.

Dean Bailey get the boys up for the challenge.

  13. He has coached 25 games, and in that time he has -

    - Completely rebuilt our back line, turning it from a laughing stcock to one of the leagues best

    - Weeded out the deadwood from the Daniher era

    - Blooded more promising youngsters in one year than Daniher did in a decade

    - Made Brent Moloney a less predictable player

    - Took Garland, who most fans wanted to delist, and made him arguably our most promising player

    - Turned Warnock into a fine backman, after doing nothing under Daniher

    - Revived Aaron Daveys career in a new role

    - Backed an unknown kid from the Tiwi Islands who electrified us in 2008

    - Coached is a to an AFL record come from behind win, 51 points down

On paper the results are awful no doubt, just 3 wins in 25 games. But the guy has literally had to start from the ground up. He inherited an untalented, aging list and has already rejuvenated it and will continue to do so.

This guy knows what he is doing, and once everything clicks, the wins will come.

Good to see some one has written the voice of reason Here. Bailey is doing a great job. The clean out for this team should have started after the 2006 Finals Campaign. It didn't so sadly the Club has hit Rock Bottom with a thud. On & off the field. How do we kick winning scores when the majority of the Forward line are injured or a first year player? I was stoked we kicked 7 Goals in the last Q against the "Pathetic Power" I want to build a winning Culture at this club yes but i want it to be done RIGHT. No more Band aids. We are in a much better long term position than North, Richmond & maybe even Port Adel. Be Patient Guys!!

  14. When I was a boy..... we had to live in a cardboard box because we were too poor to afford a house.

A box? You were lucky to have a box, we had to live in a hole in the road...

    (Read in Pythonesque voices)

Luxury! We got up 4 hours for went ta bed.....and you try telling that too the young people today. And they won't believe ya!

  15. I'm no legal expert, but that's bloody mind-boggling. How can taking drugs and punching the sh!t out of someone not be a breach of bail? How can bail be granted again? I know they can't take the assault into account because it hasn't been proven yet, but he admitted to taking drugs. Surely this bloke's a danger to society?

Perhaps there were Masonic (Collingwood) Handshakes going on. That club seems to get most of what it wants.

  16. the hawks have done well, tasmania government might not want to put there hands in there pockets if they cant have there own club, i think there sponsorship was a private agenda, they wanted to prove to the AFL they could maintain a team, kennets idea of fools gold, could haunt him in a decades time, but it was the rite move for the hawthorn.

In 10 years time it will be very intersting to see where all the victorian clubs are. I predict many changes as the new Broadcast rights have been touted as a $1 Billion. So you can imagine all involved will want top Bang for a $. The weak clubs will be in the shadows i have no doubt and it will be harder to improve Greatly if a club is in trouble. As David Bowie sang years ago "we've got 5 years" to get this club Rocking.

  17. I think the list is VERY incomplete

Players i remember being on the WILD side

Mopsy Fraser , Delicate Des Dickson , Robert Muir , Robert Dipperdemenico , Ian Shelton , Jim Odea , Phil Carman , Peter Crackers Keenan , David Rhys Jones , Mal Brown , Gary Mcintosh (Sth Aust) Don Scott , Ron Andrews , Gary Hocking , Sam Kekovich etc

"Delicate" Des Dickson. Now there is a name to remember!! He would not not last the opening bounce today! The First wave of Kennedy's Comando's..

  18. RR,

You're right, I do fly the flag for the current Board and their initiatives in terms of sponsors and attempting to shore up our financial position have been great. BUt I am talking about something that is far more intangible than that and that is the spirit of the footy club.

There is one thing that is more contagious than confidence in a footy club and that is the lack of it. Again, I have no question about the need to re-build the list. However, mine is an observation and that is all. Regardless of how we rate their skill level, we still have enough "senior" players, who, themselves, need to fly the flag more. Sorry for the cliche, but the one percenters are just not there at present.

In terms of Hawthorn and Carlton??? Since the 1996 merger debacle, Hawthorn have regularly attained over 30,000 members, even in their lean on field years. Carlton (who I think everyone on here would agree) have manipulated the system terribly, but as low as they got, the club itself was always viewed as strong at its core and again, its membership was always at the higher end for Victorian Clubs. As bad as they were, they had a core group of players, around which the gun recruits could be moulded and supported.

RR, it is the spirit of the Demon I want back, that's all. The kids will be great, but I want them to understand we are proud and at our heart, we are strong.

I agree 1996 really showed where this club was & to some degree is. Hawthorn & Melbourne went in almost opposite directions. Tiger Ridley knew we were in trouble. The Band aids were not going to last. To me it looks like they lasted until the end of 2006. I am eternally grateful we did not merge but it is only now ramifications are being repaired. But yes we need to find that old demon spirit back. I hope Todd Viney returns while Jim is the Prez.

He is the type this club would benefit from.

  19. The suggestion of giving free memberships is a valid one for a number of reasons and has been debated for a few years.

1: We already get money from the MCC and with the recent announcements more benefits will follow, I'm sure somewhere in that $1m they can say 10% covers MMC members, membership of the footy club or by some other internal mechanism.

2: They are MFC supports and already attending games, through the MCC.

3: Giving us 40/50k+ registered members gives us a huge appeal to sponsors. ie more customers to reach directly with their sponsorship.

If you worried about hiding our true figures, I think the AFL rules requires the publishing of the different categories of members such as non-game day members at Richmond. We simply add a MCC members section.

4: It gets the MCC members more directly involved in the footy club, with updates, newsletters and correspondence going directly to them. This has flow on affects to building more support, socially and financially.

I am an MCC Member & i think free Memberships to MCC Members to the Football club is the worst decision that could be made. A supporter is free, a member of a club should always pay their way to make the club stronger. Sure The MCC Member may have a reduced Rate but should still be very Financial.

  20. Should already be in the team, without doubt.

Stick him in a FP with Miller at FF to give him some protection.

I dont buy this crap about him not being ready and school footy and blah blah blah.

He was number 1 pick, he is he best teenager in the country, he should be playing AFL.

    Hope he plays vs Port.

I have heard through a neighbour who lunched with Brad Miller last week, there is a strong chance Mr Watts will play for the senior side within 4-6 weeks. He is doing weight training in the morning before school to Harden up. If i hear anymore i shall pass it on.

  21. It's been so long since I even turned 3AW on to listen to footy I can't believe Rex Hunt is still there. If anyone can decipher the drivel that comes out of Rex Hunt's mouth, then they probably deserve to be locked away with him in a lunatic asylum. The man does not speak English as far as I can tell, and certainly does not actually 'commentate' a single minute of the game he is watching. Most of the time it is hard to tell whether they're actually even playing football when he's calling. You can hear a crowd... it sounds like there must be a game on... but the words just don't match up to the action. How they still have him around after so many years of the same tripe is beyond me.

I have no particular bias against MMM. I can listen to them if I have to, but I agree that they do seem to rant on and get over-excited at times.

KB gives me the irrits and should be sacked. If not for him SEN would be a pleasure to listen to. Did anyone hear during the Collingwood Adelaide game when a Pies player (I think Daisy Thomas) took a screamer that was disallowed for hands in the back because he used his hands (in a trivial manner) to fly. The Ox turned to KB and told him that his stupid rule had "taken the great mark out of the game". KB's irritatingly typical defence was, "no I haven't David, I've increased the number of great marks in the game". Enough said.

Don't get me started on KB's "Hands in the Back" Rule or should i say "Finger touching the Jumper"
