  1. Try working 9 hours in a toy store the first day of school holidays. You need every minute you can get.

If a Melbourne player gave that kind of effort you'd boo them off the park. Harden the fark up mate.

  2. As a Melbourne supporter I was disappointed to hear the boos and jeers directed a Brad Miller today from some of the Melbourne fraternity. It wasn't his choice to leave the MFC and good on him for getting the opportunity to continue his AFL career. I wish him luck in the future.

Didn't hear a single boo myself.

  3. I find the fact that people are waiting for a 'breakout' game strange.

Why does he need to have a breakout game? Why can't he just continue to improve at the rate he is going at the moment.

If he shows gradual improvement like he has soon he will be creeping up to 4 and 5 goal games soon enough.

Completely agree. The concept of a 'breakout game' is typical wanky modern 'footyspeak'.

  4. I would like to highlight the assist he gave to Petterd today. The important thing to note is that Watts didn't give the quick dishoff that would have put Petterd under pressure from the defence. Instead, he took the ball and ran a few steps towards the boundary, drawing both men with him, then shot the handpass to Petterd for an easy, no pressure shot on goal. It's these little details that tell us just how well he thinks the game. I loved that little passage.

I agree, it was great how he timed the handball and drew the two defenders to him. Sign of class.

  5. Fair points, DP.

Everything we do this year must be viewed in the light that we are still very much a work in progress. Getting flogged by Collingwood is not the end of the world, no matter what the pearl clutching drama queens in the media try to say. And hello to you, Andrew Maher.

Our rebuild is still in its early to middle stages. We started off rubbish. We are currently inconsistent. Eventually we will start to show results.

When you consider Melbourne stripped virtually their whole list and replaced it with youngsters, is it any surprise we are inconsistent?

    No.

More generally, I would love to know why the media are chronically incapable of spotting the bleedin' obvious: we bounced back against Essendon because Essendon were rubbish and allowed us to bounce back. Collingwood are miles better than Essendon and did not let us play the game on our terms like Essendon did.

Melbourne tried hard, but Collingwood are bigger, more experience and better drilled. We are still several years away from Collingwood's level of performance.

    100% correct.

  6. I think it's fitting that we'll have to win a game or two at Etihad to make the finals. We've been rubbish there for ages and now would be a good moment to turn that around.

It's obviously completely impossible to predict how we'll go from now on. I think people should expect to have some matches like Friday night and some like against West Coast. That said, I think we'll slip into 8th. This is based on nothing but the fact that I'm generally an optimist.

  7. I might be overly optimistic, but I think the club still has a very bright future just around the corner. We do have a good list, and I think any deadwood will be cleared off at seasons end regardless of where we finish.

I didn't suffer through the 80s as much as some of you, as I was only in primary school. The passion still burns the same, and falling in love with the lovable loser that is the MFC is one of the most rewarding and horrific experiences I have ever had.

Hang tough, I think there is going to be light at the end of the tunnel this time around.

    As for the coach? TBC

I agree. I think we've got a great young list that will be a terrific side in the not too distant future. Maybe bails will be the man to lead us forward, maybe not. I hope so, because I like the guy, but if it's not I won't be too worried. We'll just get someone else in. Our ascent from bottom to top was never likely to have an evenly spaced trajectory.

I don't think the support being divided on the coach is a desperately terrible issue. It's just human nature to have differences of opinion. It doesn't mean either side loves the club any less.

While I'm at it, I'm sick of the, "Essendon/Collingwood/Carlton wouldn't stand for this" opinion. If you're so enamoured with the supporters of opposition clubs, fark off and follow them.

  8. And after you've answered this question, the next question is:

Which of the following am I most likely to pick up when I go out on Saturday night?

    1) Megan Fox

    2) Miranda Kerr

    3) Jennifer Hawkins?

Remember, you're not allowed to answer "none of them".

I reckon Megan Fox. Americans birds love aussie accents.

  9. as d Commetti said after he took that spectacular mark in the goalsquare then goaded "it is the sort of thing where you can say I was there that day when it all started ..." quite a statement. D Commetti is a huge Demon fan

He's got that wrong. I reckon Watts' first big contested grab was against West Coast at the G last year.

  10. From the AFL Website...

Trengove was charged with a level three engaging in rough conduct offence against Adelaide's Patrick Dangerfield in the third quarter of Melbourne's win on Sunday.

Dangerfield was helped from the ground and was immediately substituted off after hitting his head on the ground in a Trengove tackle.

The incident was assessed as negligent, high contact and based on a medical report from the Crows, was also classified as high impact, drawing 325 demerit points and a three-match ban.

An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 243.75 and a two-match ban.

BASED ON A MEDICAL REPORT FROM THE CROWS!!!

The judiciary in this league is an absolute circus.

  11. I don't think it's unreasonable for people to put family ahead of the football. I went, but my mum doesn't really care about Mother's Day.

The points made by Rogue (I think) above about how our supporters have supported our club through the dark points of the last few years are very salient.

  12. I'll be going on Sunday because two and half years years ago they were going to shut the doors of this club. Forever. They said that this club didn't stand for anything, that it wasn't worth holding on to, that we should move to tassie or the Gold Coast. Then, as the saying goes about when the going gets tough, the Melbourne fans got going. It was the fans who donated the money, who signed up in record numbers even though we had our worst team in 25 years, who kept turning up, who made more noise than I'd ever heard Melbourne fans make. It was even the fans who found the sponsors.

The Melbourne supporters saved the club.

Doesn't stand for anything my arse.

And the players responded. Who could forget, when Jimmy told us he was sick in 2009, the match the following weekend against West Coast. It was our most important match since the 2000 Grand Final. If ever there was a test of what the players stood for, it was that day. They needed to show that they loved the club half as much as Jimmy does. We won by 10 goals. In a season when we finished bottom and won four games. And Junior and Flash carried Jimmy's old jumper off the ground at the end.

I still believe in these players and this coach because Jimmy still does. I know they'll turn it around because of the way they played that day in 2009. Other people can do whatever they want; it's not for me to tell other supporters how to act. But it seems silly to me that, having saved the club in its darkest hour, the fans would not get behind the team now. That they wouldn't turn out in even greater numbers, make even more noise.

So, in answer to your question, yes, I'll be attending this Sunday. And I'll go every week because I'll love this club forever, unconditionally, and I'll always believe in it.

If the players show me that they love the club half as much as I do, I'll go home happy.

    Unleash hell demons.

  13. You guys are carrying on like Richmond supporters. Setting up a facebook group is very tacky and lacks class. His kids will probably see that. Have a valium and go to bed. We'll win next week.
