i can envisage situations where you (should) get more picks than net player loss\ e.g. lose 2 x band1 players and gain one band5 player should equal 1 x band1 + 1 band2or3or?

We'll find out shortly, but I think we will get one pick because we lost one net player The band will be determined by points taking all the three players into account
