Agree with most of what you said:
- Cale Morton - the 'snap' from 50 metres was excellent but at times the game passed him by. Agree that he could be anything, he looks very skinny so may take some time to develop.
- Wheatley - Still looks dashing when running with the ball.....and then runs out of ideas. He had a couple of runs that looked good until he couldn't decide what to do with the football and turned it over. There's an opportunity for him to take the next step, but is he good enough ? I have my doubts.
- Dunn - Surprised me. he has really bulked up and could be a dominator in the middle. He looked very good at times.
Bruce, Bartram, Rivers - All moved pretty well. Bartram really put in some good efforts.
The others you mentioned were pretty spot on.
Daniel Gribbin- His kO was when he flew for a mark and landed on his back. Took a while for him to get up.
agree 100% 'Melbournepotter'.

surely thats the point. we dont want players who stay out past the self imposed curfew.
if he continues to do it, then get rid of him - regardless of how talented he is.
we want a professional culture at the club, which is why the curfew is in place, and someone continues to break it, then who gives a smeg if they leave???
The curfew is both unreasonable & unrealistic & will, i have no doubt, be broken. Its too early for a Saturday night 3.00am would be more reasonable for a single young man on a Sat' night.

Heresy!
Haha.
Oh, and your going to be disappointed, because Judd is coming.
OH?

Carlton have been put in the position they are to large extent by the pernicious impact of the salary cap penalties they receive for rorting the salary cap breaches. The impact of this has decimated their list and denied them an access to the talent pool. However it goes without saying that internal Carlton issues since the salary cap exposure have also played a significant part
The denial of draft picks effectively stuffs a club up for up to 10 years. The decisive impact of the salary cap breaches sent Carlton effectively to the wilderness on the field. And despite a series of No 1 picks in recent years, you look beyond that and their list is crap. They have huge holes that will take significant time to fill as talented players mature. Carlton have been a rather unskilled team of recent years and prior to 2007 I dont think there was any issue of tanking. They were just awful. I believe with the appointment of Swan and the mounting issue with Pagan at the start of this season effectively gave them the basis to throw the season and to chase Judd. Very difficult to prove. And just basing it on the bitter words of an ex assistant coach with an axe to grind is very dangerous and not substantive evidence.
The AFL rules are as much to blame for this.
So whats the penalty for Carlton....remove draft picks?

What happens in athletics finals after a competition winner has been found after the event to have cheated the system for unfair advantage. Take their trophy off them & remove them from the records.

Agreed Jaded. I have been guilty of such negativity over the past few weeks. May I suggest to you or anyone else we have a 'NEGATIVITY SWEAR JAR' on this site. Everytime someone posts something negative they pledge a certain amount of money to the MFC. Maybe 10 cents, 20 Cents, more, whatever. All money will go back to the football club. Alternatively, all the money can go to Andy and Nasher.
Maybe just an abuse jar with the proceeds to go to 'demonland' & leftovers then passed on to the DEES.

I think both McDonald and White will go around again next year. Why should mcdonald retire? He's just come off back to back B&Fs!
And there is no way Wheatley will be delisted.
I hope not! I don't want McDonald to give it away.
We might however have a need for a mobile tall forward @ the Zebras.

Winning games is nice, winning premierships is what counts
If the right player is available, sure...we could trade to get one, but they would have to be: in order of priority:
A) CHB / CHF type... what club is going going to let a quality one of those go?
B/ Ruckman...we may have to trade to get an experienced one, as well a Natanui if 08 all goes to hell
C) Outside Midfielder with blistering pace and skills
A/ CHB / CHF type... There was one there for the taking last ('07) draft [Lauchlan Henderson], he went pick 8 to Leigh Matthews..Potential pick 4? We could have him & be putting games into him now.
B/ Ruckman... Cameron wood, 204cm young ruckman. Why couldn't we trade TJ & our 3rd round pick to the Lions for this kid?
C/ Outside Midfielder... these types are way more common than keys & rucks, & take less time to develope them. Was there a good skilled outside type available @ pick 21???
-
There's gonna be mid-season retirements abound... In many ways, it could be WORSE than 2007.
VERY POSSIBLE! We now have 2 likely type rookies who are definately pushing for a realistic tilt at senior AFL footy.

I would much prefer to see the following team line up:
Backs: McNamara Martin Whelan
HB: Bode Rivers Holland
C: Wheatley Bartram Cheney
HF: T. Johnston Dunn Gilchrist
For: Maric Zomer Jamar
Rucks: Meesen Valenti Liddell
Int: Warnock M. Johnston Biddlecombe Gribbin Lamb
Paterakis Plymin Dean Monaghan Summers
And pigs might fly.
I don't know but I would play the fitter of the Dee boys starting the game & ease the underdone Bartram & Whelan into the game after the first Q.
It needs to be a blend of Zebra & Dees listed players at all times.
Too many defenders in the announced list so I think they intend for Martin to play forward tomorrow.
Dunn seems to be getting trained up as a midfielder to increase his attack on the ball & to increase his posession rate & engine.
-
As a coach in junior footy I'm forever telling players not to be the heroes and kick the goals. When I do that I'm trying to teach the players in the midfield not to crowd the attack but to leave it to the guys in the forward line to kick the goals.
What's the official doing eavesdropping on what the coach says anyway. It's Roos' busineess and the Swans as to how he coaches the team. The AFL and the media should bugger off!
Didn't Roosy publicly criticise carltank for the kreuzer priority pick they laid down for?
Demetriwho I think is getting back @ Roosy for this as the AFL were conspicuously quiet to carltank, seemingly accepting their attitude to the game & the rules.
All is fair apparently as long as you keep the turnstiles clicking.
Even criminals are above sanctioning.

If we can't win this weekend with a near full squad we we will be in real trouble this season.
There are only 4-5 players that are not playing who would normally get a game:
Bartram, Whelan/Wheatley, Rivers and Bruce.
Only Bruce is a real match winner.
I know its still a practise match and it will be 30 degrees but these guys are proffessional athletes with a thirst for winning. I think the writing is on the wall if we cant beet the Roos with a full squad.
It should be a good game, with no guaratee of a win. We have no momentum yet but it looks like the footy dept has seen enough of our list & is now starting to form the side that will play Rnd 1. Just the right time IMO to start to get some form & confidance into the group prior to Rnd 1 kickoff.

Dyer repeated that story often. He thought it was cruel that RDB was given second placing behind Ted who touted himself without any modesty. Dyer didnt come at Teddy and Lou's immense self appraisals.
Barass always had a modicum of modesty about his achievements. Or he tried to anyway.
Anyway I saw most of them play, but I was too young to assess Ron.
I saw Lethal at his best and I saw Ablett and Carey at their best.
I put Leigh Matthews (who as I pieboy at the MCG I saw often) and Gary Ablett as the best I witnessed.Yep, OK.
I dont know who's on third base because these two were a fair way out in front.
It would be out of Williams and Carey I guess. Top 10.
i dont rate the Doulls Walls and ayres who were luxutiating in flanks when they should have been CHB/CHF. Doull was a champ.
I cant split Flower and Daicos as favorites because their play was truely inspiring and they would be in my top ten.
My way of dealing with these decisions is to ponder them playing against one another, (one on one), IMO flower would kill daics, also bartlett (9) wouldn't get a sniff, is the player to stop Hird, better than Buckley & Schimmer, the only one who would give him some trouble would be Matera because of his explosive speed.
-
From a totally biased viewpoint I admit, I saw both Whitten and Barassi play. In terms of what they each contributed there was nothing between them in skill and aggression apart from height which enabled Ted to play KP's. Ron is ranked way too low.
The two best wingers I've seen are Flower and Greig. Keith Greig had the luxury of playing in a team of champions following the recruitment rule changes that gave North two flags in quick succession. Greig was a champion footballer nonetheless. Unfortunately Flower was never so lucky.
It's probably not available but if anyone wants confirmation of how good Robbie Flower was get hold of the interstate clash between Vic and WA at Waverley way back. Flower played wing in a superb team and dominated to the point that he took the ball behind the half back flank (and it was a big ground) ran, baulked, handballed, ran forward continually, received again, gave off, found space, got the ball yet again and goaled. An absolutely sublime moment of football skill.
For anyone unlucky enough to never saw him play I'd be very wary of offering naive/dumb criticism.
Spot on Bob, I to was there that day with my Saints supporting mates & Flower was playing against that WA champion Brian Peake, he gave him a bath then towled him down. FLOWER WAS A GUN of the biggest caliber.
When Barassi was coaching the Dees he'd play Flower @ CHB on Ross Glendinning who was a star back then & Flower would show him how.

I think its a very good article, and reallys shows we have someone committed to developing youngster at this club, unlike the last 3 years.
I hate us losing, but if its giving game to younger players, then I am all for it.
I am confident, if fully fit, our midfield will upset quite a few sides this year.
Above all else if we can unearth 2 young key position players to 'come of age' it will be enormous for the Dees.
DITTO.
The footy dept' are now realists...This is great news, now I feel confidant the club can build a team to win finals instead of a team built just to make the finals.

So Neita is saying that after 1am you're allowed to be hunting for Souvlakis, Maccas and 24 hour KFC
- or a motel room........ :D
-
Geelong - Boring.
Boring??? If the Cats are boring I must be watching the wrong game, they went out and pumped everyone last year with hard direct footy.
I would love the Dees to be boring like that!!

For the record, from a previous post, http://demonland.ugbox.net/forum/index.php...c=8591&st=0.
Bailey said the selection of Martin was all about grooming long-term future key position players for the club.
"Stefan fitted our needs more than Ashley did," Bailey told Sportal on Tuesday.
"He is a tall (198cm) key position player with an enormous leap."
Bailey said he believes Martin could develop into a future key position player at either end of the ground.
"He can play down back or go up forward," he said.
Bailey seems to think he can play in the Back line aswell as up forward i think he was an exelent choice...i think in the Future(when developed more) with his size, mobility and "enourmous" leap along with a good set of hands he could be a very hard forward to stop......
Left hand / right hand?????
Are you following me yet?...............sounds like your a tossing which way to go! the footy dept are coordinated with the development of these kids & do know what the're doing.
And i hardly believe you!
It might be too hard for you but be patient, it will happen.
-
Is anyone else concerned that Martin was playing in the ruck, when he was recruited on the premise of being developed into a key tall back?
Looks like the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing yet again.
Believe me, he wasn't recruited as a defender. He's a tall player who can play many roles for the team. Back, Forward, pinchhit in the ruck, pinchhit @ CH/F.
-
To be fair, how do we know what ND did at times when he thought team discipline was lax?
Whatever he did or DIDN"T do, he wasn't successfull @ getting the quality out.
-
I did come across as a bit of a [censored] so I apologise Schtacker, it was uncalled for an did nothing to contribute to the debate.
Morton has been a very classy outside midfielder with pace and great disposal. I think he'd be wasted in the forward line, leave him in the middle of the ground where he can use his speed, height and skill to cut the opposition up and deliver it to the forwards. Same goes for Bate, can you imagine a future with McLean, Jones and Sylvia playing out of the square and Morton and Bate on each wing? Puts a smile on my face! But I honestly think that a genuine marking CHF would compliment the team perfectly and it would allow us to play our best players to their strengths, not sacrificing them because we have no key forwards.
I have no problems with the club drafting Morton as at the time he appeared to be the best available talent (and will be a great player), but if the club wanted to address the issue then they would have taken Henderson (who I was hoping for, if only we could have gotten the Lion's pick 8 instead for TJ...). Our problems with KPP's have gone back for many years and I've argued long and hard that our attempts to solve them have been unfruitful.
Agreed!
-
Certainly a fairly disappointing effort first up from the Zebras. They lost it in the middle of the ground where they could just not keep possession. Over-possessed the ball, fumbled easy opportunities and when they did decide the kick the thing, they did so very poorly... (Does any of this remind you of any other team???)
Maric looked OK at times but I have concerns over his height and his work ethic - which I thought at times were poor.
Martin was easily outdone in the ruck - had one appalling set shot on goal.
Didn't see too much of any of the others, but its often hard from my vantage point, concentrating on other things.
Fair points.
Maric looks to me a highly foot skilled baby, looks OK in space but in traffic is a little unprepared in his thinking, needs time to adjust to higher tempo & pressure. high school football probably slowing him down. I hope he's a hard worker.
Martin contested strongly @ the cntr bounces where he was the No1 ruck. He was constructive @ boundary throwins working hard for position & very determined, helped linkup through the corridor chased hard & tackled, very promising.
Dunn had a mild hitout playing on ball. OK. has built up a lot, to a mans body. Now needs to start playing more robustly & take the body whilst contesting.
Zomer is a tall rangy boy. not a big impact today.
Poyas now has hair! :D
Chaney & Mcnamara look OK but will need sometime to pickup the tempo & intensity.
All in all a good but quiet day @ beach rd where a very young zebras outfit took the field for their first hitout.

Sounds good, I'll b there.

You can't be serious... you're claiming our boys are underdone only starting praccies 5 weeks before the season? What do you think this is? These blokes have practically been playing footy every day since they were five years old and have just completed months of competitive running, weights, drills etc What do you think that they went away on an end of season trip and totally forgot how a game of football works? If you think a turd is suddenly going to bloom into a daffodil once round 1 swings by you are sorely mistaken
sheesh from now on i'm going to completely shut myself off from pre-season... just serves to build your hopes up for nothing
There's your problem, these games are only practice matches were winning is not as important as following the team patterns & procedures. These are the important things @ this stage, implementing the new ideas into action on the field, this will take a little while to settle.
Only now are we starting to play some of the more important players to the team, blending them with some 'kids' who have just shown us the're ready to take the pressure on.
Why stress over tarted up practice matches?
