Going to be very interested to see how Schache goes. He’s got a good opportunity here to make him difficult to drop if he can make himself a target a get a couple of goals. I’d like to see him play with enough presence where a defender has to be thinking ‘where is Schache’ and not just be able to run off him at will to other contests.

Papley can have an all Australian small defender on him every game and he’ll still do what he does every second weeks. Loves being under fire, loves being roughed up, loves being doubted and especially loves being a focal point. Take care of the rest of the ground and Papley can’t do anything.

Remaining hopeful is all you can do when you have little to zero control over a turbulent situation. Watching the boys over the last couple of seasons, it doesn’t feel like there was the joy of playing like there was in the Premiership year? I could be totally wrong but there was also a tension there. I can’t explain it, just a feeling I have. I have a singular hope and that’s the coaching staff reminding the players to have fun on game day. Take a bit of the pressure out of everything and first and foremost go out there and enjoy it. Any task is harder if it’s sucked of all joy. Especially playing sport. Everything else will flow from that. Hopefully. Go dees.

Kozzie and Goodwin, could look at Rioli last night and give that as a role for Kozzie to emulate. He didn’t try and play like a millionaire, instead worked hard and found space for himself across the ground to hurt GWS. He was effective and hard at the ball by getting himself involved in the play. Rioli kept Port in that game for 2 1/2 quarters. I think Kozzie could do with trying less flashy things that look great and more concentrating on running hard into dangerous spaces across the front half of the ground. The more he gets the ball the more dangerous he will be IMO.

The combination of Gawn, May, Lever, Tracc, Oliver and Viney will not just happen again regardless of how well we recruit. This is a once in a generation combination of players. We are a massive chance, Goodwin has to demand a change in forward connection and we need to recruit forwards that can convert. The next generation could be Jimmy Toumpas and Morton all over again. It’s not a given the next gen will be anywhere near the players I’ve mentioned above. Strike whilst the iron is hot. I’m out anyways for this year. Bring on 2024.

Next year could be our last shot at it. May and Maxy (arguably our two most important players) already aren’t spring chickens. Blues, Crows, GWS, all look like they’re primed to get better which makes competition for top 4 even harder. Sydney are the 4th youngest list so with good recruiting in the off season, they’ll be up their again. If we don’t win it next year, that could be the window closed and we’ll be surpassed by other clubs. Glad there’s 6 months off. Bring in the cricket season. I love you Dees. For god sakes recruit some big forwards that can convert.
