Sorry if its already covered in other threads but I only found one post for this weekend on it in this thread by @Tassie DevilI think. Also not wanting to disappoint any others that missed tickets.

WA G2G pass? I assume there should be no issues since I'm flying direct from TAS but any advice on form completion for answers such as "Reason for Visit"... First MFC Premiership in my lifetime! etc.

One of the options is "AFL Finals", so it's an accepted reason to enter WA.

    Hi all,

I am a long-time daily reader but very infrequent poster. I just arrived from Germany into Darwin yesterday and will be in quarantine in Howard Springs until September 21st. I am a huge Dees fan. Before moving to Germany two years ago, I attended every game in Melbourne and sat in the MCC (I am a joint MCC/MFC Premium member) with my brother and father. (@Fat Tony is my brother.) I can't remember when I started following the Dees, but it would have been when I was around 3 or 4 years old. I used to watch "Demon Attack" repeatedly after school, which was a video of our 1994 season (Brett Lovett was my favourite player back then).

I am looking to get 2 grand final tickets should we make it - one for me and one for my wife, who is with me in quarantine. I managed to convert her to the Dees about four years ago, and now she watches every game, but she is not a member yet because we were living overseas. I believe my MFC membership means that I am Priority 2 for the Grand Final. What would Demonlanders advise, given that I need two tickets? If people are looking to offload a Grand Final guarantee, I would be happy to buy them at cost price if we beat Geelong on Friday.

Hi all, I'm still looking for one Priority 1 barcode. Will be eternally grateful if someone can help me out and am happy to refund you or donate to the club or a charity of your choice

From the website: "Going out of the side is key forward Christ Dawes and utility Tomas Bugg. Midfielder Viv Michie, second-year player Alex Neal-Bullen and ruckman Jake Spencer have been named emergencies."

Hard to believe he can't play with a name like that!

  5. I think this post would have been received a lot better on here if the title of the thread was chosen more effectively, and one that did not elicit such emotional responses from posters. It raises some interesting points about the strength of our key position forwards on our list, particularly relative to our complete dearth of midfield talent.

Premiership sides are always founded on very strong midfield groups - which we are a long way off at the moment. We need to be creative in our search for midfield talent and the opening post does this.

Sometimes you have to give up something good to get something good in return. For example, consider the Chris Judd trade. While West Coast were desperate to keep Judd, they also did very well out of the trade - essentially getting Masten and Kennedy and pick 20 in return for pick 46. Certainly for the next 6-8 years West Coast will get more from that trade than if they had kept Judd (and are getting significantly more out of Masten and Kennedy this year than Carlton are out of Judd). Furthermore, by bottoming out they managed to snare Nic Naitanui, who has the potential to be a dominant player more consistently. The point I am making is that even with very good players (or in Dawes' case - good players) trades can have positive outcomes.

In terms of trading away one of our key position forwards - as the opening post discusses - I agree that Dawes is the only one that we could receive anywhere near what they are really worth (given Clark's injury and Fitzy's lack of games - although if his form continues he may be in high demand come the end of the season). However, there are a few key reasons why I think trading Dawes is not advisable - unless the offer is exceptional.

Firstly, as a footballer Dawes provides a lot. He is excellent at being the 'lead-up' type forward as he always provides a contest and importantly, he delivers the ball very well into the forward line. He also provides excellent defensive pressure which is very important, especially with how many tall options we have in the forward line.

Secondly, Dawes is clearly a strong leader. By all reports, Dawes is an excellent trainer and it looks like he has a very positive impact working with our young players. Clearly this is the type of player, and character, that we need to dig ourselves out of our current hole.

Thirdly, Dawes is a big bodied, strong, experienced footballer. Again this is something we are short on.

Fourthly, I do not think it is a good precedent that you set by trading away a player that you have just traded in - even if you have, as we will, a new coach. Dawes is only one year into a four-year deal (and has clearly had a positive impact thus far) and trading him would send the wrong message, both to players from rival clubs that we are seeking to attract but also to our own players. Under both Neeld and Bailey we have alienated senior players through disgraceful mismanagement and the consequences have quite clearly been disastrous.

In summary, I think it is unlikely to be a good idea to trade Dawes unless the offer is exceptional. But with several clubs such as the Bulldogs and Carlton crying out for a key forward, and undoubtedly looking at our key position stocks with envy, it is not completely out of the question. I think the standard of the debate on this thread is disappointing given the amount of thought that has gone into the opening post, as well as the importance of looking at ways to improve our deplorable midfield.

  6. This is a summary of Colin's stats over the period of time he's been with us, they are about 10% down on the previous two years.

    http://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/pc-melbourne-demons--colin-sylvia

When he's hot he's hot, when he's not he's not. He is a very good player and hopefully the new coach will get the best out of him. It looks from this article that he will re sign so let's hope he can prove to be the player we know he can be.

    http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/7415/newsid/121574/default.aspx

Looking at those statistics, while his disposal numbers are down about 10% from last year or 2 possessions a game, he is kicking 0.2 goals more a game (around 20% more than last ) and getting 1.2 more tackles per game (around 20% more than last year). This indicates he has had in many ways a similar season to last year. In my opinion Sylvia is one of few must keeps on our list. As our side improves, Sylvia will become an elite player of the competition. I think he actually plays his best football when he spends more time across half forward, as evident in his games against Richmond and Collingwood this year. The fact that people on this site would entertain the thought of trading him is ludicrous. He is clearly worth the $500,000 if that is what we are prepared to offer Scully, who at this stage has far more weaknesses as a footballer than Sylvia.

  7. I think the FD do. This is his seventh year at MFC and he should be making a position in the side his own.

Despite the illusion in 2010, he still has not nailed that spot.

And Bate is in the same boat.

Its amazing we seem to be getting more from a lower pick in the 2004 draft in Newton (and good on him).

P.S. Dunn turned 24 on Saturday.

You're kidding aren't you? Newton plays one decent quarter and he's 'giving us more' than Bate and Dunn. Dunn is clearly the new Cameron Bruce on this forum.

  8. It is juat diabolical how bad this guy is.

30 odd useless possessions, smashed in countless one on one contests and even managed to give away a 50 metre penalty.

He is not part of the future,m he is a liabilisty. So why is he even in the team? Someone pleasse tell me what he brings to the table.

Every game that he plays is one less game for McNamare, Watts, Maric, Gsysberts, Strauss etc etc to learn theiur craft at the highest level.

Trengove and Scully must snicker at the fact he is the Vice Captain of the MFC. I pray they ignore him when he tries to give them advice.

And thank God he is out of contract at seasons end. Denmons should let cut him loose as it will free up 500K in the salary cap to sign some real footballers.

Is this YzeMagic in disguise? This kind of player bashing is ridiculous, he was in our best 3 or 4 today, it's diabolical how bad your post is.

  9. Cameron Bruce has never been a champion but since 2000 he has been and still is a good player.

I thought he played a good game but as usual there are demonlanders calling for him to be dropped

and one even stated he cost us three goals.

Am I missing something ? So to answer my own question I watched the game again. I only watched

Bruce and I often rewinded the tape to make sure I did not miss anything. Its amazing how much

you miss watching the first time. You often only remember the bad things. An example is Bate, he

made two bad mistakes ( kick into man on mark and not kicking to Petterd) everyone just remembers that

and not the many good things he did during match.

So this is my view on Bruce's game.

His role was to be a defender and due to the woods rotations he had many different opponents such Thomas,

Anthony, Cloke etc. His direct opponent did not kick a goal, he was never beaten one on one, and the

possessions his opponents had can be counted on one hand. He often blocked for his teammates allowing them to mark.

Leon Davis is difficult to tackle so how many of you remember that great tackle in the last quarter which

    earned Bruce a free kick.

So as a defender he earned a big pass.

So I will now move on to his possession game and execution skills as everyone bags.

Tony Shaw bagged Bruce for a turnover that cost a goal in the first quarter, I'm sure a lot of you did to. Bruce marked the ball from full back and McKenzie ran passed for handball. Lets stop here, It is Mckenzie's responsibility to look ahead for clear space before demanding the ball. Bruce was facing the woods goal so its his responsibilty to make sure that no one is catching Mckenzie before he handballs. Bruce marked the ball and gave it to Mckenzie who was clear, Mckenzie ran a few metres but stopped because a woods player appeared behind Bruce, he panicked turned around and handballed to Bruce who had three players around him. He was tackled with a resulting goal. On this occassion Bruce did everything right but Mckenzie made the mistake.

Shaw had another go at Bruce for a handball to Bate. Yes it was low at Bate's knees but he received OK and gave

a good handball of. It was the next passage ( trengove) which made the error yet Bruce cops the blame.

Bruce had 19 possessions and they all and I repeat ALL hit the target. He did drop a chest mark from a kick in but he quickly gave a quick handball to a running defender which commenced another inside 50.

So in summary he beat his opponent all day and had 19 possessions which ALL hit the target.

So all you Bruce bashers out there, get hold of a tape and watch it with pen and paper. On the left had side

write all the good things he did and on the right the bad.

Please do not come back to me and state I remember this or I remember that. If you want an intelligent debate

tell me at what point it happened in the game.

Fantastic post. 100% agree. His defensive game is very underrated. His kicking is average, not "terrible". However he did have a terrible kicking year a few years ago when he had ankle problems. His handballing can at times be poor... however I don't think you can blame him for the turnover with McKenzie as he had his back turned and was attempting to keep the ball moving quickly after a fantastic kick out from Strauss. Thus I think it was primarily McKenzie's fault, as the caller, as he had a clearer view of the play.

The other handball to Bate was ordinary and slowed us down but it didn't cause the turnover, the next handball from Bate, (and the dropped ball?) did. Bruce is still one of our most consistent performers and will be top 5 in the best and fairest this year if he remains injury free. What more do we expect from a senior player other than consistently high performance? If Bruce is so terrible why does he consistently figure highly in our best and fairest count? Sorry but I think I'll side with those in the inner sanctum, who rate Bruce as one of our best players and leaders and not the Bruce bashers on this site.

  10. B: Bennell Warnock Rivers

    HB: Bruce Frawley MacDonald

    C: Grimes Moloney Davey

    HF: Bate Miller Garland

    F: Green Jamar Petterd

    R: Martin, Jones, McDonald

    Int: Dunn, Trengove, Scully, Maric/Jetta

If Garland doesn't get up then I'd play Maric or Jetta, whoever misses out.

I'd play Jamar in the goal square like against Carlton last year for 60% of the game, the rest in the ruck when Martin needs a break.

Green will also run through the midfield for parts of the game.

  11. Steph Martin is not a ruckman, and could end up being that "extra tall" fwd/back that we needed. The truth is our midfield needs heaps of work, and with Brock exit stage left, and Macca soon to follow (retirement) the dees did the right thing picking up mids in the draft.

Fitzpatrick could end up playing forward if he gets his body/game right.

Stef Martin has the makings of a very good ruckman if you combine his rucking ability and athleticism. Remember he is still learning the game - and the ruck position

  12. B Rivers/Macdonald Warnock Garland

    HB Morton Frawley Bruce ©

    C Davey Grimes Scully

HF Green (VC) Miller (VC) Bate

    FF Maric Jurrah Sylvia

    R Jamar Moloney Jones

    IC Trengove Martin Watts McDonald

    Unlucky: Bennell, Rivers/MacDonald, Wonaeamirri, Dunn

If McDonald is not captain he would not be in my best 22 as he will take a spot of a developing midfielder, but I think in all likelihood he will be.

  13. What a f'ing [censored].

He's been a great servant of the club, but he's clearly not an "f'ing [censored]". There's obviously a lot of resentment within many senior players about the way the club has been run under Bailey. This is probably a large reason why Brock chose to leave. You can understand why they'd be frustrated, we've been trying to lose and for the players winning is their career and what they strive for.

Sadly the way football is going these days careers are cut short for those who are no longer/never have been outstanding players or in bottom 4 clubs. But if you were in his position you would be annoyed too, he's given his all for the club and his delisting is clearly not on merit but on age. I think the AFL should look at ways to keep players in the game longer, such as Lloyd and others who, if they were playing tomorrow, would still be very damaging. I do agree though that the right choice with Robbo was made for OUR club, but I can certainly understand why he would be frustrated and do not see a problem with him giving honest answers.

  14. I don't know if this has ever been raised? If it has I apologise.

How about having a draft ladder which is taken from the results from mid season - mid season, rather than working off the end of season ladder. To me it makes sense and it is an easy solution.

    Any issues with it?

In my opinion I think the best way to avoid tanking for a priority pick is to issue them not on number of wins, but on percentage. A system where to get a priority pick the team has to have a % under 75 for two consecutive years. A team like us would rightfully get the priority pick, but a team such as West Coast with a much healthier percentage of around 86 would not get one, even if they only win 4 games. It is much harder to "tank your percentage" than "tank a game" in my opinion.

  15. Cameron Bruce - a laughable effort today in his 200th. Classic dinky hand passes putting team mates under pressure, constant fumbles, running from contests. It was all there on display today. Who was the genius that gave him a 3 year deal? Untradeble as no other team will touch him.

AFL website has him in our best YM.

    BEST

Geelong: Selwood, Scarlett, Ablett, Chapman, Ling, Enright, Hawkins

Melbourne: Green, Grimes, Petterd, Bruce, Moloney

Maybe it is time you open your eyes and stop being so biased. His disposal efficiency was actually the same as Moloney's today at 67%. He is our vice captain, reigning best and fairest and good chance for this year's best and fairest, for a reason. As for his future he is 29 and barely ever had a soft tissue injury. There is no reason therefore why he shouldn't keep a spot in our side for 3-4 more years.

I do however agree that McDonald and Robertson should retire. Mclean has been good the last few weeks and had a bad day but let's keep things in context, he's playing in a B grade midfield against the competition's best. He is still one our best players.

  16. Or We could recruit Brent Girgic back..... No Thanks.....

If you're going to bag a former player simply because they weren't up to it at least spell their name right.

This year draftpicks will be worth more than usual because of the Gold Coast concessions so we should have a good chance to get an up and coming player at another club that we know will make it especially with our second round pick. A good finishing midfielder with pace would be desirable.

In terms of recruiting a forward I don't think Hawkins is the answer. I don't see much real scope for improvement and the modern game doesn't really suit him. Forwards need to be quick and agile in today's game as well as good on the ground. That's why I think we should look at someone like Mitch Morton who is potentially a 50 goal a year forward in a good side. As we improve I think he could be a useful 3rd forward. In this year's draft there seems to be a shortage of good forwards too.

Bailey has basically ruled out going after Hall but he is still playing good football so you'd think he could get picked up somewhere.

  17. If you look at the stats Cameron Bruce's disposal is around average. This year his disposal efficiency is 77%.

    http://superstats.heraldsun.com.au/profile/200052.html

This is better than Brad Green who is perceived as a much better user of the ball. His efficiency is 72%.

    http://superstats.heraldsun.com.au/profile/200054.html

Travis Johnstone is recognised as an elite disposer of the footy. His effiency is 68% for the year.

    http://superstats.heraldsun.com.au/profile/980050.html

So many of you have jumped on the bruce bagging bandwagon and continually ignore the good parts of his game. He is one our best players and whilst he does have the occasional shocking kick he is actually very good at linking up and setting up play.

  18. Just returned home after a week at Lord Somers camp where Jack Watts was one of the guests for lunch one day. He speaks very well and seems to have a very mature and humble head on his shoulders. I spoke to him afterwards for a few minutes and he is loving his time at the dees and has already put on 6kg. He looks as though he still has plenty of growth left in his body too. Just thought you guys would appreciate my findings.

  19. thats rubbish , if there fair dinkem bruce ,green. and white will get dropped this week.

If I go to all that effort to write that...do you think you could explain why that is rubbish?

Yeh lets drop three of our best players - seriously all this will achieve is more thrashings!

How can you justify dropping three senior players who have been good performers over their careers on the basis of one ordinary game? And to think, none of these three players were that bad! Whilst stats dont tell the whole story, White had 28 hitouts, Bruce got around 20 disposals whilst severely underdone and Green was far from the worst with 2 goals and 25 odd touches. If you start dropping your best players all the time you will be playing a bunch of rookies everyweek who will simply get smashed! The MFC can't afford to sacrifice games in such an important year. Memberships are well down and losing games will not help this! Plus, does it really do young players any good throwing them in the deep end if they get belted everyweek?

  20. I have had enough of this pretender. The usual crap from him today. Soft, crap skills, junktime possessions.

He has a heart the size of a pea. He would be on about $400,000 a year. An absolute joke and boy does it get my blood boiling that this pansy can make so much, and not give a stuff about the jumper.

Whoever said he should be next Captain, please put ypur hand up in this thread. What the hell were you thinking?

I may as just copy what i said in another thread on the matter:

"To be honest, I'm fed up with demonlanders around here continuously bagging fantastic servants of the MFC such as Green, Bruce and White. Firstly, Green and Bruce are blokes that give 100% in every game that they're involved in...to suggest otherwise is ridiculous. They are not and have not ever been superstars, but all our supporters seem to blame them for everything that goes wrong around this club! Brad Green is a good kick, someone who puts his body on the line for the team, but he is not an exceptional athlete and he does not know how to find the ball like a Scotty West. He does NOT have exceptional talent and he gets the most out of himself as a footballer. What more can we ask of him than that?

As for Bruce he is clearly playing injured and has done for the last few years. Bruce is a midfielder and he needs to be played in the midfield! Makes sense doesnt it? Bruce would be in the top echelon of distance runners at our club... when he's fit we need to put him on the ball and let him run opposition players off their feet. Everyone here has got to understand that Bruce is recognised by the playing group as a leader of this club, someone who gives his all every week and is one of our best players.

Everyone around here is saying its curtains for Jeff White. Am I the only one to think he wasnt that bad yesterday? He got 28 hitouts! and we drew level in clearances..not a bad effort for a ruckman considering we got flogged. Sure his input around the ground was below par...no denying that...but one of the reasons for this was that we never got our game going! A ruckman's job is not to get his own ball but to provide a target and in his case be a link man. He had a bad game but in the context of his career and his last few years for the dees it was an aberration. Jeff White has been a great servant for us...he has played over 100 games in a row (an outstanding effort for a ruckman), and just recently i read on this site that he was considered by another afl player to be the 2nd best ruckman in the comp behind cox. And we are saying its time for him to retire? Are we serious? Good idea guys lets give Jamar another go because he has clearly shown to be of afl standard. Jeff White could easily play 5 more years as a second ruckman!!!!"
