CASEY SCORPIONS v FOOTSCRAY BULLDOGS - VFL FINALS WEEK 1

Nope one of the elimination finals is -
I'd love to see Declan Keilty play well in this finals series and boost his chances for the upcoming draft period. After last years disappointing first round exit at the hands of the Bombres, can't wait to see us have a very realistic crack at the GF this year...see you all at Casey Fields Saturday!

Grimes and Trengove future rests with Goodwin
DemonDave replied to dazzledavey36's topic in Melbourne Demons
Good result for Trenners! Deserves a full pre-season to get a fitness base up, improve his speed and endurance and hand a crack at getting into our squad rotations -
You'd think Dylan Collis, Tim Smith and Angus Scott would be in this side, even if it is at the expense of a fringe demon, as they've been big contributors for Casey this year, as has Ed Morris.

Here's his old man from back in the day, knew I had one in my collection of him! -
Super win today given we were missing most of our usual tall forward targets from this year in Weed, Hulett and Kielty, and I didnt hear Tim Smiths name called, did he play today?

THE MOST AWESOME POST MATCH THREAD EVER!!!
DemonDave replied to red and blue forever's topic in Melbourne Demons
For what it's worth, if it hasn't already been stated elsewhere: Average Age: Hawks 26y 222d Melb 23y 176d Average Games Played: Hawks 130 Melb 66 So younger by over 3 years, and average half as many games as them per player! -
THE MOST AWESOME POST MATCH THREAD EVER!!!
DemonDave replied to red and blue forever's topic in Melbourne Demons
OK I rarely look at and never really post in post-match threads, but couldn't resist this time. Being at the ground, the atmosphere was unbelievable in that last quarter charge. The euphoria at the siren was about on a par with being at last seasons game at Kardinia Park. I've watched the replay twice now, and could easily watch it again tomorrow and still have a grin from ear to ear. Right from the first bounce, where the umpire fails to execute it, and the camera hones in on him with a smile on his dial, you just knew the camera was then going to go to pan over to Big Maxy offering a few words of advice to the hapless green goblin, all said with a mischievious grin on his face. A few other completely random observations: -Kents field kicking was superb, he really can fire bullets with that left peg when on. -Oliver's clearance work: his ability to get his arms free in heavy traffic is superb, as are his second efforts, see that last quarter where he won a ball in the middle and streamed forward to lay two tackles inside 50. -VDB's second halves in the last two wins have been great, offering a leading target higher up the ground, and the ability to hit the scoreboard. Just needs to bring that sort of impact to his first halves. -The clear coaches instruction early in the match for Hunt, Frost and McDonald to take the game on, and run at and through the Hawthorn forwards. Provided exciting and unpredictable results. -Jetta continued his outstanding season. His vision while in the middle of heavy traffic to find the right option is second to none. -
Not to mention 15 goals this year, which places him 5th on the list at Melbourne.. Hogan 39 Watts 37 Garlett 25 Kent 24 Gawn 15

Even better was the analysis of that play on, I think, the Sunday Footy Show on Nine. First time I've watched that show in years such was my euphoria of the win. They highlighted that Stretch was playing on Mitchell on our half back line, ran really hard up the middle and was rewarded for his efforts whereas Mitchell half jogged and was left 50 metres behind where the ball was. A great highlight of his workrate and willingness to get to contests

Hogan for Pederson is the logical and obvious one. No way JKH comes in after 1 game at senior VFL level in 15 weeks. The selectors have said time and time again that players need to build up match fitness and form over a number of weeks in the VFL this year, he will be no exception (see also Salem)

Clayton Oliver bitten by some VFL spud.
DemonDave replied to dazzledavey36's topic in Melbourne Demons
Player Oliver of the Scorpions, has been charged with a medium level offence of assault on player Cooks' teeth with his index finger. The act was deemed intentional, reckless and low impact. He can accept an early plea of two weeks. -
Eff off Harvey..can still visualise the time he dobbed Dunny into the umpires for hitting him..

Clayton Oliver bitten by some VFL spud.
DemonDave replied to dazzledavey36's topic in Melbourne Demons
Does anyone have the official VFL findings? What was the judicial ruling to get him off? Funny how the commentators asked Myke Cook while interviewing him during a quarter in that last half what happened, and he said something along the lines of "He seemed a bit upset about something, lets just leave it at that". -
Hasn't needed to, with a combination of Spencer, Pederson, Max King and Keilty there this year, and at least one of them generally resting up forward.

The commentators pointed out just before that kick that he's kicked 17.3, so he knows where the goals are. Almost impossible to kick goals from that pocket at Casey when the wind blows to the other pocket, as it so often does. Highlight of the day was Grimes rundown on Lonie, timed his run perfectly. Lowlight was the umpire paying holding the ball, and then 50, against Trengove when the only player who had hold of him was Bugg. The look of bemusment on both their faces said it all! Pick of the players for mine today was Grimes. His composure and ability to move the ball along his wing a feature. Thought most of Oliver's touches today, again predominantly kicks, were of very little effect. His net metres gained would probably be very minimal. After being seemingly bitten by Cook he played angry and distracted for the rest of the day. The lack of courage from any of the commentators to say what they and we saw of that incident was appalling, maybe because a lowlife such as Campbell Brown shares the commentary box meant it was no big thing to them. Massive win in the context of our season, especially when losing the crucial ruck dominance of Spencer so early. The last few weeks have been pretty ordinary, and we definitely learnt our lesson from last week of the importance of scoring goals against the wind.

All this angst over a defence that has conceded, I think, one point more on average each week than last year? Here's the games played totals for the back 6 defence for each team, as they were selected: St Kilda: HB 16 Jack Newnes 19 Sam Gilbert 11 Leigh Montagna -85/173/265=523 FB 14 Jarryn Geary 24 Sean Dempster 17 Dylan Roberton -136/216/96=448 Total Games Experience-971 Melbourne: HB 29 Jayden Hunt 28 Oscar McDonald 45 Matt Jones -13/11/58=82 FB 42 Josh Wagner 25 Tom McDonald 39 Neville Jetta -12/98/88=198 Total Games Experience-280 Until these number of games played gets up a lot higher, there are going to be plenty of times our defence falls apart simply due to lack of experience.

This miss was what ultimately cost us this game, more so any mistakes that our under siege backline was in that last quarter defending the howling gale. I was standing near the Casey dugout at the time, the miss did not go down well in there! Also conceding those two first quarter goals against the breeze, which were the only 2 goals kicked at that end of the ground for the entire afternoon. It's interesting being near the bench seeing just how hands on with Plapp that Brendan McCartney is. As I've mentioned before, before every single huddle at every game I've been to this year, McCartney has a word to Plapp directly before he enters the huddle to speak. Then in the last quarter yesterday McCartney was constantly on the phone from standing behind the dugout to Plapp up in the coaches box. I've gotta say if I was coaching I'd find the constant intrusions annoying, but it clearly must be working as our results this year show.
