For anyone worried he isn’t up to our standard, watch the Rnd 14 replay against the Tigers. Wet and cold Friday night big stage, lined up against Dusty often in the middle Luke had 32 quality touches, 1 goal and 3 Brownlow votes.

If that is your injury cover, that’s sensational

    Agreed. Pants'd him.

I see Essendon as his best fit in terms of their needs and his skills.

Purely for game time in 1s agreed.

But if you listen to his conversation about why he chose Melbourne, he mentioned the clubs culture as a big factor. He is ok with playing in 2s if that's where he is asked to play, but I think he also believes he has a lot of growth yet to play out despite being 26... under uze et al.

I personally think its a great addition. Cost us doughnut, and we get a tough inside mid ready to go... and putting red hot pressure on established players to perform and maintain the grade... win win

Are they still doing that? I had some moron sitting next to me yelling that out all game one QB. I just kept saying 'Josh Fraser'

I thought he was going to punch me by the end of the game, but I can handle myself and I guess he saw that.

So sweet seeing Jack ice the cake. I hope my moron mate from long ago choked on his methadone watching that.

Yes some are... felt sorry for his kids. The constant swearing was alarming. I went to a shitty public school so no stranger to a bit of scum... but seriously. Wanted to knock the guy out.

My favorite moment of the year.

Watts last goal, arms open, half arrogant look on his face.

    Magic.

    Wasn't it great!...almost worth 8 years of waiting !!

even better with a foul mouthed Collingwood parent/moron behind me sledging him earlier as being a wasted #1 pick... I enjoyed yelling '#1' at him after he iced the game!

Dazzle, I think Biffen probably summed it up best. He did burn brightest and, for mine, the one who was closest in terms of natural talent was Liam Jurrah

. Both flawed individuals but ,of course, you went to see them as they could be electric.

    Absolute gold.

great to see Sean White again

Now apparently you have to earn $4.6 mill pa to know how to post a letter $1.7 mill pa to run the AFL!

I'm only a pensioner whose supported the MFC for 65 years but I'm prepared to go out on a limb here on the 18th February 2017.

We will be the 1st AFL club to achieve the triplicate premierships in the same year in the Seniors, Reserves & AFLW and it will be this year.

I urge every one of the latent supporters of old to get on board now, sign up for membership, ring Robbo #24 @ MFC and join the Foundation Heroes or the RDB Foundation right now or at least encourage any one you know who isn't on board yet this year to act now.

It's going to be too late later to say what a good job Roosy and PJ did.

Lets all support our club, boys and girls NOW!!!

    I love the optimism

    What ?

    Salem's soft ???

This is one weird Sunday morning.

Fair enough. Most demonlanders who have replied share your view. I hope his play this season changes my opinion.

I do acknowledge his build and nature is different to a Viney or brayshaw, I just wondered whether he had the opportunity to use his body more... maybe I'm judging far too harshly.

Either way, great first up game! Thanks for the replies

Random musings for you to think about:

    • Gawn played 59% game time and Spence 48%. So basically they were rarely on the ground together. Max will play around 80-85% game time in the season - does this mean that we wont play two rucks because effectively we didn't yesterday?
    • Our leading contested possession winners were Viney (12), Oliver (10), Brayshaw (9), Salem (9), Smith (9) - great signs that Salem is getting a hard ball.
    • O-Mac took 9 marks for the game. Which was more than Cloke and he is a marking machine.
    • Salem had 4 clearances. Which was more than Jones or Oliver.
    • Melksham was blowing out the cobwebs but had more rebound 50's than anyone else in the game. He also had 3 1%ers. While I'm not convinced he is playing round 1, not a bad effort from him.
    • Brayshaw had 5 inside 50's which was only behind Dalhaus for the match.
    • Jones (6) and Viney (7) led the way with tackles but not to be outdone were Brayshaw (7) and Stretch (6). The boys are adding a defensive mindset as well.

What this all means? We moved Lewis, Jones, and Vince out of the fire and the young boys stepped up. Specifically Salem and Stretch who are outside mids, who showed a little more balance. Our top performers are becoming our under 23's and that is only going to make us better.

Interesting stats... the one stat that surprised me was salem's contested possessions.

I know he is an outside player, but I think he can be soft in the contest sometimes, has opportunities to go in hard and shirks...although the stats don't seem to agree. How did everyone else see this?

Joel Smith was the big turn-up for me. Laid the best three tackles of the game, read the ball well and was constructive with his disposal. Dare I say his athleticism reminds me of Easton Wood. I think the brains trust have big plans for him. Sam Frost might be the one to make way.

Actually totally agree here. I like Frost's athleticism - however I think smith has this and more footy brains/read on the game. Tackling was outstanding!

All I can say is that, once the highlights of the game as a whole are uploaded, you'll enjoy some promising footy from our boys.

Joel Smith was another today who stepped up and took his chance.  He might find it hard to crack the 22 to begin the year, but he can only continue to develop and get better from here.  Moves very well, is strong in the contest and doesn't look to bad with his disposal.  One to certainly keep an eye on.

Agreed. Although if he gets off the rookie list I suspect he'll play before others. Looks the goods. Strong overhead, strong at the contest and used the footy pretty well ... only an upside for mine.

it will be interesting to see if he'll play ahead of guys like Jetta and frost.

Check under this link around the 2min mark on the Hungry for sport page      11:19 Ben Darwin; Gainline.biz on Hungry for Sport

I thought Demonlanders might be interested in discussing the ideas brought forward by Ben Darwin (starts around the 2min mark). He's researched pretty much all the major team sports around the world, not just AFL to come to his conclusions.

I guess it grabbed me as I must admit to agreeing with his conclusions and have thought along these lines from observation rather than research.  Of course I also liked that his research showed us to be in a good place as club going forward, also that Collingwood were in screwed.

My take on his research is that if you build a stable club, recruit (in AFL language the draft), develop your own players (you can augment the list but not too many outsiders) and don't look to recruit big fish as saviours, then success will come...

It certainly makes sense. Interesting that he talks of statistically, no coach can do better than a %5 gain when big churn occurs. Lookout bucks and Eddie!

Everyone seems to be assuming Jetta is a shoe in for a small back spot. I found the wording of Macca's update on him interesting...

It’s been a really good summer from Neville. He trained incredibly hard during the off-season break and has given himself every opportunity. He’s now part of a really competitive group of mid-sized defenders/wingers, so he’s up for the challenge of winning his spot and keeping his spot. He’s always been a gentleman and he’s still a gentleman, and he’s highly-respected in our footy club

    Agree with you. 'Every opportunity'...

and what's with the gentleman rhetoric

We've supposedly got the worst midfield in the league, stats wise, yet we still won 10 games.

Just imagine when our midfield grows and matures to go with the rest of the list.  The 17 other clubs would be scared shitless.

    Very valid.

looking forward to seeing who steps it up with Viney and seeing the focus off Jones every week.

Can salem get on the park consistenantly this year? Petrraca/brayshwaw's/Oliver/hunt/ so many more -development... it's going to be a long summer

I am still at a loss, taking into account DD's information, I attended training on the first day Clarrie was back, he was clearly suffering from something, second session he had to pull out and after discussion with medical staff, sat down and waited for session to end

I approached him, he didn't look well and said he was feeling crook, I checked with Misso and he said the same thing

He disappeared from the next training session or two and then reappeared looking a lot better, I asked him after the session what had occurred and

said he had been sent for tests and it came back he had asthma/hay fever and was now on medication, but the whole episode had knocked him around, I would be surprised if he lied to me in such detail

He participated in the whole session or two after that, before appearing in the rehab/other group on Monday, as a lot of players including Nev Jetta and Dom Tyson have done the same, I didn't find this unusual

I also have approached Macca/Goodwin/Misso and asked whether anyone was brave enough to turn up not ready to go, and all said no, including Macca, you ask him a question and you get an answer, as others attest, so I believed them

I don't really care what you think SMJ,  I am over the negativity displayed on here, some need it to be able to post, I watched Clarrie motoring around the field  in repeat 400's the other day, didn't look underdone to me

I've seen >25 cases of hay fever/asthma in new patients over the last month (since the thunderstorm)- before this 3-4 for the year. I don't find the above hard to believe at all.

Steroids and ventolin are making huge differences but may take a week or so to kick in. (Inhaled Steroids).. hope Clarrie feels better.

The answer to fixing this is via the salary cap. Give the wooden spooner $100K more cap space than 17th, and 17th $100K more than 16th etc. This would mean that the bottom team would have an extra $1.7m in the salary cap than the premier. Players could then become free agents from after the initial contract but the competition would still be even.

First thing I've read that actually targets bottom dwelling clubs. Worth a thought

    Giant Jake Barrett delisted.

Don't know enough about this kid, but obviously tough to get a gig in a midfield full of stars... would have thought he is worth a look and worth potentially more than a late pick at 69
