He is in terrible form. Maybe he knows he is going at the end of the season which reflects the way he is playing just like what happened when Jackson left for Freo.

Don't post much but this is interesting, noting how poor Jackson was in his last year compared to his GF year. Totally agree with DOX, looks like he is deliberately downgrading his trade value for the team he wants to play for next year, our only hope is that Port enter the bidding.

It's worth looking at Davo (a long time junior watcher/expert) from Bigfooty November 2022 early predictions as to who the best draft prospects were for 2023.  Tholstrup was considered a top 10 prospect by many watchers 12 months ago.

    1. Harley Reid - Bendigo - 185cm 82kg - really shun at the champs, has been excellent all year in a variety of positions
    2. Daniel Curtin - Claremont - 195cm 91kg - best afield in the u17s pre GF game, terrific game after being injured for a large chunk of the yr
    3. Jed Walter - GC A - 195cm 91kg - wonderful season showing off surprising athleticism and kicking 9 goals in 4 games for the Allies at the champs
    4. Koltyn Tholstrup - Subiaco - 186cm 80kg - one of the best for WA in the champs, forward who can rotate in midfield
    5. Zane Duursma - Gippsland - 188cm 73kg - a real danger in front of goals, can also rotate through midfield, he was a real weapon for Vic country that they missed in the finale
    6. Archer Reid - Gippsland - 201cm 85kg - athletic and flexible KPF, had a huge trials game, was ok at the champs, but has heaps of potential
    7. Nick Watson - Eastern - 169cm 66kg - tough, electric small forward, loves a goal and can kick them from anywhere
    8. Jack Delean - Sth Adel - 181cm 73kg - was great last season and had a good champs this yr, but didnt dominate the sanfl u18
    9. Nate Caddy - Northern - 190cm 83kg - high flying medium forward, took a tonne of huge pack marks this yr, excited to see him fly high again next yr
    10. Ashton Moir - Glenlg - 186cm 78kg - had a good sanfl u18 season, had 1 good and 1 poor champs games

Interesting, not a Tasmaniac in that group.

I doubt it. Sheehan is very inaccurate in these drafts each year.

Was in a restaurant 1 night in 2008, Sheehan was at the next table, asked him If Nic Nat would look good in a dees strip, he said, " Believe me the best player in the draft is Jack Watts", He goes on Hype not smarts, if he says we will pick someone, then hopefully we don't.

I see Tomo, BBB, Tom Mac and Melk as the obvious delists next year at this stage.

So I don't think Tomo will be around in 25.

If Laurie fails to have an impact in 24 he will be another.

Agree that Tomo, BBB and TMac off the list next year, so would that not mean we would be looking this year at the best tall to replace one of those guys, O'Sullivan / Curtin etc. ???

Updated for Billings trade using a future 3rd round pick tied to Melbourne.  We still have Sydney's F2 and WBD F3.

Nominally we have 1 senior list spot (after the promotion of Turner) which suggests that Melksham will become a rookie.  The other option is to have more senior players next year and fewer A rookies but imv this option is unlikely.

We hold a full suite of picks in 2024 so can deal our F1.

Hi Luc, can you tell me the machinations of moving a player from the primary to the rookie list, is it a straight move by the club or do they have to satisfy the AFL in some way.

No way the Dogs with Lobb, JUH, Darcy, Naughton take Curtin especially also having access to Croft

I did say that players may not fall in this order, the ranking is from Cal Twoomey !

No way WC will take a real 8 and 16 and ff1 for pick 1, we have no chance of getting it. I hope I am proved wrong.

  7. Pick 11, I believe, becomes pick 16, if you factor in F/S and academy picks, using Cal Twomey's September rankings players may not fall in this order, but you can see how compromised this draft is. Our pick 6 (8) may net us one of Curtin, Sanders or Caddy, with pick 16 a toss up between Murphy, Windsor and Wilson, along with Young Doggie Brown, job done for today. Hard to turn 8 and 16 plus a FF1 into #1.

  8. We just have to understand that we are only ever going to be interested in drafting 2 players and young brown, with the upgrade of Turner, then we are only interested in 1 player in the draft unless the FD move Melksham to the rookie list, creating a second opening on our list. Reid, Brown, Turner fills our quota at the moment. Goody has just said that Petty ain't going anywhere. Might clear an extra spot if Spargo gets told he will probably only play 2's from now on. Lots to play out, Lamby will get it done.

Not sure Croft has nominated the Dogs, weighing up whether they have too many tall forwards, could be wrong but !  Western Bulldogs father-son prospect Jordan Croft yet to make call on future, 'open to other clubs' (afl.com.au)

Assuming North don't get access to him, you would have to think he would be available at our pick.

    Likely draft outcome will be:

    1 - Harley Reid (WC)

    2 - Jed Walters (GC)

    3 - Colby Mckercher (NM)

    4 - Zane Duursma (Haw)

    5 - Ryley Sanders (Mel)

With the loss of Jordon, Dunstan & Harmes we really need more midfield depth coming in and he is a high end one.

Even if North get pick 3 for McKay, it is hard to see them taking both McKercher and Sanders given the amount of midfielders they have. Think they would be more interested in either Curtin or Caddy with that pick.

If we can get another pick around 10 and take O'Sullivan I would be very happy with those two.

    Curtin ???

True, they'll be a mid 3rd rounder short of sufficient points IF Croft gets bid at 11 - probably not too hard to trade in the necessary though. Pick 4 and Croft would be a good haul for them.

Not sure Croft has committed to the dogs, they have too many tall forwards at the moment. Lobb, Naughton, JUH and the old ruckman's father son. As already mentioned above.

Massive yes to this guy. Ignore his height, it's never been less important. This kid can dance, makes a moment into something special regularly. Do people think Tom Papley is too short? Or do they hold their breath when he gets near it? The latter imo.

Papley, 177cm. Watson 170cm, fair difference in height, but the kid has good reports. Hope he hasn't reached his ceiling.

I think its all well and good to say we should poach a forward, but the reality is that there are not many that we could get at this stage:

We're also really tight on a salary cap level.  If Grundy leaves, that should free up some money, but not enough for a genuine, top 5-6 in the league key forward.

If people are floating 800K for Ben Mackay, a genuine key forward is going to be a lot pricier.  We would have to look at a second rung, Chris Dawes, Ben Holland, Cam Pedersen type player, or a risky option, like a player returning from a significant injury, at that price.  I don't know who that would be, but its unlikely that it will be a silver bullet in any case.

I also don't think this is necessarily poor drafting or trading by melbourne that has got us where we are. We've been looking for a big bodied key tall for a long time, but we've had some bad luck.  We've:

    • brought in Jesse Hogan, Sam Weideman, Luke Jackson, Van Rooyen, Matt Jefferson n through the draft.  Two of them left for the west, one is a best 22 player at 20 years old, one is too young to be anything, and one of them didn't cut through as a forward.
    • brought Ben Brown and Josh Schache through trades, one of whom was a hail mary, and the other got us a flag but has been [censored]/injured since.
    • thrown defenders forward, particularly McDonald, Petty and Smith, which has sort of worked at times.  McDonald, however, plays well once every four seasons, Petty has been injured and Smith is athletic but limited;
    • bought in another top ruck to try and let Gawn/Grunday play as resting forward, but that hasn't worked;
    • drafted a whole bunch of mid and small forwards who actually have been pretty good (Fritsch, Kozzie, Bedford, ANB, Chandler, Spargo).

In hindsight I think its easy to say we should have drafted Curnow/Mackay, or bought in McStay, but Weid was a reasonable pick and McStay has been injured a lot and kicked less than 20 goals this season.

The question for me in that siutation is what is the best, most achieveable way we can improve our forward line next year.   The answer to that may be trying to poach someone, but we need to identify who and how.  More likely, I think the answer will be through the draft, but that could be through drafting a key forward (e.g. Nate Caddy); a small forward (e.g. Watson); a midfielder who can go forwards and kick goals (e.g. Duursma); a genuine mid with good delivery (e.g. McKercher) or a key defender/forward who can either play up front or cover a move of Petty forward (e.g. O'Sullivan).  It might also be time for a coaching/tactics change, but I am not sure whether its our fwds or our mids that are really the problem.

The reality is that our forward line should be better next year.  I imagine we will move Petty forwards permananently, and so our forward line would be somethign like Roo, Petty, Fritsch, Chandler, Kozzie, ANB.  Talent wise, I don't think that is bad at all, particularly if we draft players who can rotate in/provide better delivery like McKercher, Watson, Duursma, etc.  That may be our best option.

Makes sense as he won't have any competition with Hickey retiring.

Add the fact Sydney have better Picks to use is also a bonus for us. Deal will drag on no doubt until the last day.

Can't see Sydney offloading one of McLean or Amartey.

    Sydney have Picks 29, 30, 41, 49 to use

The key to this draft will be Gold Coast that has to find enough points to pay for three Academy players - all predicted to go in the top 20

A few clubs including us are all over it and whatever deals will get done - I have every faith in our team - should help boost our draft hand

West Coast may also get involved as they are keen to get Daniel Curtain so may split the No 1 pick.

GC already have enough points to cover their Academy kids, they have 4 of them not just the 3 we've read about. It would look like they will trade pick 4 for future firsts. They may only need around 4200 points depending on where their bids fall, and they will get some currency from any players they trade out. Maybe our FF1 plus ports FF2 for grundy plus #15image.png.e946069b9672d411e9dde5e87665b92a.png

Just a note on your order, GC have pick 4 (pick 6 in your mock) and will presumably trade it out... so there will be another selection between Hawks and Melbourne with the GC Read bid notwithstanding. Might be us, might be another team. If your general order stays then we miss out on Duursma and we're looking at prospects from Caddy onwards.

Yes GC do have pick 4, but will be gobbled up with their first academy member at pick 2, so they will trade it out for currency (our proposal will be 15, 24, 34 and our FF1, possibly then offer 4 and 5 to WC for 1), we may be the club who bid and get their pick 4, but who knows, I'll still take any 2 of Watson, Duursma, Caddy or O'Sullivan. Will be interesting off season. Its all navel gazing at the moment, Cheers
