  1. Easy to be depressed, deflated and demoralized, after perhaps some unrealistic expectations going into the season, but.... with 4 or 5 key players out injured there are glimmers of hope, at the very least players definitely have to learn to combine as a team, which will be a positive in the longer term.
  2. Good effort from the Dees today... Trengrove improving, great game from Terlich and Fitzy - some cause for optimism !
  3. Craig came across as diplomatic, level-headed and honest in the presser. I get the feeling he's looking forward to the new role. Will be intriguing to see how the rest of the season unfolds.
  4. A club's decline can be sudden (eg 1965) or slow and heartbreaking (the last 15 years) - a turnaround may take years or it may be quicker than we expect. The events and changes of the past week have been lightning fast and the repercussions will be far-reaching. I'm hoping the renaissance of the club will be likewise.
  5. Bob Skilton, unflinching courage and 100% effort all the time, could kick goals with torp from pocket...interestingly only played in finals once under coaching of the Red Fox. MFC: Robbie F - a natural, poetry in motion.
  6. GC: new team, new hopeful supporter base, injections of AFL $, strong leadership on field from GA, low expectation of success. MFC: old team, long suffering (disaffected ?) supporters, almost ran out of $ plus recent fine from AFL, onfield leadership struggling, everyone thinks we should be doing a lot better. no comparison really.
  7. Ah yes a classic for the ages, note how often Peacock begs him to be humble.
  8. Fast Forward 2017 gf, Haw vs Melb...what colour scarf is JK wearing?
  9. Isn't this the guy who turned the once beautiful Albert Park into a F1 race track ? I'm sure there are better 'uncursed' candidates.
  10. I wonder how much lower the team's morale can go - speculation about club's future, coach apparently DMW, finances possibly shot, fewer and fewer supporters going to games. Yes they're 'professional', but geez it's got to be difficult summoning any sort of effort under these conditions. Hopefully they can somehow put in a good perfomance against the pies. Schwarz's comments need to be read in this context.
  11. Sure it would seem to be bad form for Roos to be 'talking to' the leadership group, but not if he has already been offered the job and is sounding out the players on their opinion of him before making a final decision. I reckon this would be a very sensible approach.
  12. Well said, it's our club. Wonder how many of the players actually barrack for the Dees....
  13. The Dawes article was accurate as far as it went. Effort or lack of was evident, but the heart of the matter is why is this effort missing. I suspect it's got a lot to do with low morale or a defeatist attitude - thinking that no matter what you do, it's not going to matter. As Dawes correctly points out there is no silver bullet - but the team does need someone to inspire them and restore confidence.
  14. With injuries to key players, team morale and confidence probably at an all time low, little show of support from the supporters, club admin in total disarray, coach's head on chopping block....it would take a major miracle for the team to be in this contest. But miracles do happen....
  15. Certainly seems like you're right about matching the man to the position. But who were the also-rans for the job in 2012 ? Was he the only viable choice at the time?
  16. Interesting to look at the longevity of MFC coaches for the last century. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Melbourne_Football_Club_coaches Anyone with a win ratio of < 25% for the year got the chop. Sadly MN is not likely to get anywhere near 25%.
  17. If you're really old OD, you'll recall the MFC in July 1965....
  18. Our seemingly never-ending debate on whether or not to replace the coach has actually been covered in the sports psychology arena quite a few times and for a number of different team sports. To summarise, the results seem to be that if your team is doing badly changing coaches mid-season wont help, indeed the team could actually perform worse in the short term. For those interested: http://www.freakonomics.com/2012/12/21/is-changing-the-coach-really-the-answer/
  19. Yes too many changes each week combined with a young and inexperienced list means the players probably havent had the opportunity to get to know each others games, or strengths and weaknesses. A star team will usually beat a team of stars - we havent got the latter, but hopefully with time and determination can build the former.
  20. The last paragraph of this article is spot on - it's certainly true that things can turnaround rapidly in this game we all love. We probably all recall July 1965 and how quickly fortunes changed for the MFC then....
  21. An articulate and sincere message that gave us an all too rare but fascinating insight iinto the player's perspective.
  22. Lions always hard to beat at Gabba, but seem in a slump atm. Dees desperately need to continue the form revival - too close to call.
