I would assume it is to lighten the load on his foot that he hurt in the preseason. I interviewed Aaron vandenBerg a few years ago and he mentioned that he no longer or rarely trained during the week to manage and lighten the load on his injury prone feet. It was also one of the topics of the To Hell and Back doco series the Dees made a few years back.
