REDLEG23'S MATCH SIM OBSERVATIONS

A stunning morning here @ Casey Fields & the vibes are well & truly up!

Rehab Running laps … laps & more laps - Hore, Kentfield, Kolt, McVee & Melk

The intraclub match sim is underway!

[played in two periods]

PERIOD 1:

• Viney grubs one forward from the centre, Fritsch collects a bouncing ball in 50, hands off to Trac who hits Chandler lace out to the RHS pocket - converts from the set shot.

• Lever vocal barking directions down back

• Beautiful passage from Sharpy - Sestan across half back to Sharp who gets & runs. Couple bounces then hits Mentha top of the 50. Hands back to a running sharp who streams inside F50 for the whites first.

• Nice clunk in defence from Petty

• Trac looking focussed & composed with everything he does - just slots a set shot bomb from 50.

• Viney to Caleb to Trac to Oliver. Clarry kicks to the RHS pocket to Chandler who found space again - misses the shot

• Chandler involved in just about every forward entry so far - another set shot from the same RHS pocket. This time he converts!

• Lovely swoop & collect of a lose ball from Bowey deep in defence who then hits Langdon in the back pocket.

• Windsor with the run and carry streaming forward, kicks … misses.

• Kozzy getting busy. One-two through  the middle then a long bomb who hits AJ mid stride into the open goal.

• Stoppage half forward 50 - lose ball ends up with Max who hits it sweet from 40. Goal to the skip.

• Viney with the centre clearance hacks it inside 50. Chin gathers another lose ball who hits Rivers in space. Converts from 35.

A quick drinks break & score update:-

Blue 5.3.33

White 2.0.12

• Hendo finds space across half forward 50, back in board to Spargo who kicks in a loonggg ball (35mt) to Campbell marks deep in forward pocket. Misses the set shot

• Who’s chuck? Dark, curly hair &  built like a brick @ghostwriter

• Another contested mark in the LHS forward pocket from Campbell against Petty - this time he converts

• Laurie looking the more composed from the Whites - gives off to Kozz who streams through the middle who hits up a leading Campbell again! Then chips to a free Fullarton who converts from 30

• Menth’s a smooth mover, evasive

• Kozzy with Pace thru the middle who pumps one forward. AJ contests deep against two, gathers the ground ball out the back who goals on the line - 5 goal apiece now, Whites with the last 3.

Half time Scores:-

Blue 5. 4. 34

White 5. 1. 31

Period 1 Stand outs:

Trac, Clarry, Chandler, Kozz, Bowey, Windsor, Gawn, Campbell

Roo, Turner & Jeffo barely sited up forward atm.

PERIOD 2:

• Charlie Spargo looking nice for the whites. Confidence is growing

• Beautiful transition work through the middle from Spaz on a couple of occasions. Hits up Roo who then chips one to Fritta 30m out who slots it

• Kozz & Spargo prominent for whites

• Turner looks down on confidence atm - great body work deep in F50 but then drops a sitter. Opportunity missed.

• Not a lot of leading or movement from our forwards, plenty of pointing though.

Another quick drinks break & score update:-

Blue 6.5.41

White 5.2.32

• Our key F50 posts are still very young up forward aren’t we - Jefferson, Turner & Roo

• Lindsay kicks the ball with lovely touch & makes the right decisions

• Long ball in F50 - beautiful contested mark from Roo against many … misses from 35. But better.

• Hendo clean below his knees & with some dash & skill. Looks likely

• Fritta with another set shot now. Better. At times getting be ball across the HB line & using it well.

• McDonald v Roo is a great match up right now - on queue Roo with another contested mark leading in front of Tmac - converts from 35. He’s rolling now & no signs of any back concerns

• Pup converts the set shot from close range

• Great tackle from Clarry on Kozzy - holding the ball

• Jeffo nowhere near it atm - up against Adams

Full Time scores:-

Blue 9.8.62

White 7.3.45

PERIOD 2 Standouts:

JVR!

And that’s a wrap. Teams branched off for more running & drills.

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.

The Demons have the Bye next week but then are on the road once again when they come up against the Gold Coast Suns on the Gold Coast in what could be a last ditch effort to salvage their season. Who comes in and who comes out?

  • POSTGAME: Port Adelaide

The Demons simply did not take their opportunities when they presented themselves and ultimately when down by 25 points effectively ending their finals chances. Goal kicking practice during the Bye?
