Platitudes and Insanity

Featured Replies

Insanity = Doing the same things over and over again and expecting a different result.

Platitudes = So, after the loss last week I watched our coach give his post match interview and noted the following quote : Godwin  "Clearly we were inefficient forward off centre....We have got a lot of things to work on, especially forward of centre" Question "People might say, because it's a bit of a familiar story for a while, do you revisit the method?" Yeah we have revisited it (connection in the forward line) a few times"

I thought to myself - I have heard this before, so re watched  most of his interviews from round 1 2018 to the present (sad i know)

Godwin quotes from post match interviews:

Round 1, 2018 - "we've got some work to do inside forward fifty...64 (forward) entries is a lot and you should win games when you get 64 entries" (we lost)

Round 14, 2018 - Question "you dominated the inside fifties" Godwin "our efficiency inside fifty wasn't the best tonight (we lost again)

Round 18, 2018 = "we didn't connect well forward of centre, its a bit of a tale of our games this year where we struggled to connect...inside fifty.

Round 2, 2019 - "we need to connect better forward of centre"

"Round 5, 2019 - "were not connecting with the ball forward of centre"

Round 6, 2019 - "We got beaten forward of centre to often......we couldn't connect with our handball or kicking (inside fifty)"

Round 18, 2019 - "were trying to find an avenue to goal....we had enough opportunities today"

Round 22, 2019 - "our in efficiency (inside fifty) is making us look worse"

Godwin quotes over the last 2 years - featured in most post game interviews:

"we played a pretty good football team tonight/today"

"I understand that the fans are frustrated and deserve better"

"We are going to work really hard to get ourselves out of this position"

"Ive/we have full confidence in this set of players"

"Im not interested in the past" (maybe thats why he learns nothing from it?)

What else did I learn?

I doubt we have played the same  6 players in the forward fifty for more than a few weeks in a row. Just about everyone and his dog has played in our forward line.

Seems to me that until we solve this issue we are doomed to dwell at the bottom of the ladder.

  • THE STATS FILES: St. Kilda

As part of the effort to trim the runtime of the regular podcast, we’ve been looking at which segments could be reshaped without losing what makes them valuable. One segment that naturally came into focus was Binman’s Stats Files. Not because it isn’t important; quite the opposite. It’s become such a substantial and much-loved part of the show that it deserves a little room to breathe.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
