A discussion of meaning

Featured Replies

There's a lot going on in the world.  How do we find 'true' meaning?  How fraught with danger is that search?

It was an initial thought of injustice that sent me down a weeks long rabbit hole and lead to the podcast below.

This thread will hopefully be much, much more than an analysis of the rights and wrongs of the podcast, though they're more than welcome.

Bring forth your meaning, your struggles, your life changing moments.  Your podcasts, book references, moments of clarity, transcendence and, dare I say, divinity.

To that end I will say that these last few weeks have seen a strange convergence of things in my life that previously had maintained a strict level of isolation.  I'm still working towards a greater understanding such that I can clearly present it to others.  This post is, I guess, part of that process.

I'm currently reading 'This is your brain on music' by Daniel J. Levitin. (book discussion thread future post) and plan to follow it with Jordan Petersons '12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos'.

Note:  The podcast is 2.5 hours.  I found in thoroughly engaging and was surprised that it ended 'so quickly'.

Note2:  Please please adhere to forum rules.  Private discussions of heated disagreement are vastly preferable to having the thread closed down.  Thanks in advance.

title fix, text correction

The first question big question for me is how to find 2.5 hours to listen to a podcast.

As a precursor I will state that the only certainty that I can cling on to is my uncertainty about everything.

Thanks nutbean.  Transit usually provides a good chunk of time to fill for me.  The second discussion is 1.5 hours, perhaps more digestible.  Certainty certainly constrains - for better or for worse.

The dominant storyline coming out of Round One for Sunday’s clash at Optus Stadium centres on the influence of the big men. The spotlight naturally falls on two elite ruckmen who, five years ago, shared the stage in Melbourne’s memorable premiership triumph.

  • THE STATS FILES: St. Kilda

As part of the effort to trim the runtime of the regular podcast, we’ve been looking at which segments could be reshaped without losing what makes them valuable. One segment that naturally came into focus was Binman’s Stats Files. Not because it isn’t important; quite the opposite. It’s become such a substantial and much-loved part of the show that it deserves a little room to breathe.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
