This is a great story of a baseball coach in the US delivering his final speech to his little leaguers:-

Like so many other things I read, it made me started thinking about the MFC. In particular, these lines:-

“You’re going to take that for the rest of your lives, what you provided for the town of Cumberland. You had the whole place jumping, right? You had the whole state jumping. You had New England jumping. You had ESPN jumping. OK?
“You want to know why? They like fighters. They like sportsmen. They like guys who don’t quit. They like guys who play the game the right way. If everyone would play baseball like the Cumberland Americans, this would be the greatest game.

This is exactly what I love about sports. I love watching competitive people compete.I still don't believe our players are fighters. I still don't look at them as sportsmen. I still believe they will quit when the going gets tough.

I guess I am lucky in that I love cricket as well as footy. During the summer I get to watch the Australian cricket team. We don't have the talent we had 10 years ago but I know every time I sit down to watch Australia play I am guaranteed they will fight. I wish I could say the same for my winter sport.

I will get howled down, but I still don't believe the draft is our answer. Blaming a lack of talent is once again letting the players off lightly. If we were getting everything we could out of our current players we would not be embarrassing ourselves the way we are. Why are we still not getting everything we can out of these guys? What are they waiting for? Can they be more 'tired' than other teams? Are they seriously happy with 4 wins in a season? If you're a competitor and are desperate to win at all costs, you find ways to eliminate the ridiculous errors that we commit that cost us matches. The slowly turning attitude of the excuse making supporters needs to continue until we finally demand unwavering AFL level competitiveness from the players that represent our club.
