Why do we allow umpires to decide who is the league's best player? The "fairest" is essentially decided by rules in that if you dont infringe you are eligible. Why do we still rely on the subjective judgement of umpires to adjudicate the best when readily to hand are all manner of objective statistical measures of success? I agree that the stats dont tell the entire story. One piece of inspiration might equate to x number of cheap posessions late in a lost game. Stats dont tell the entire story but they tell a lot of it or why are they so extensively used? By stats I have in mind the level of sophistication associated with Final Siren or other package where tackles, clangers, conversions etc are all factored and appropriately weighted - nominate your preferred statistical approach I dont mind. We might ad other indicators voted by a panel that recognise inspiring play, match winning goals or tackles etc. What do you think?
