The online edition of the Herald Sun is carrying an article by Mark Robinson in which Gary Pert explains that controversial comment about the club’s culture ~

"My point, that was taken out of context - I was saying we are dealing with player behaviour issues and I don't want the entire club being tarnished by that," he said.

"When I made the comment, we had won more games of footy in the past three years than any other team (in the league) and had recently won a premiership, and that we were doing a lot of great things. I was saying, the player behaviour issues had to be dealt with in that regard and not discredit the Max Gawns, Jack Vineys and Kate Hores ... I didn't want the whole football club being tarnished by a couple of people."

In what was a complex situation, Melbourne had to carry the can for its players being in the controversial and secretive AFL drugs program, which meant the club wasn't fully across all the information - and still isn't. It's frustrating, but it's reality.

"I did take offence, and maybe got a bit emotional, but I did take offence to a couple of players' behaviour tarnishing what I think is a club full of magnificent people," Pert said.

I’m sure this won’t satisfy everyone but it’s logical and consistent with the views expressed to me in recent months by some of the senior group of players.

In that article, Robbo makes this extraordinary comment:-

    1. I don’t believe this accurately reflects the situation.

    2. The comment more accurately describes public reaction to Robbo’s dismissal from AFL360.

    A “set up” for what?

A set up in the Herald Sun's dreadful campaign against the Melbourne Football Club dishonestly suggesting that there was a mutiny at the club based on a poll taken on line.

"Thousands of Melbourne fans have backed former president Joe Gutnick's call for the embattled club to sack coach Simon Goodwin."

The poll was open to the public and there's no evidence as to how many of the people who voted are Melbourne fans.

This is a disgraceful and dishonest set up against Simon Goodwin and a breach of journalistic ethics. The only person who deserves to get the sack is the person responsible for this outrage.

What we can hope for is Trac and Clarry back in form leading us back and winning games of footy.

Here's the thing. They will never be back the way they were in 2021 and the first half of 2022. Time has moved on, the game's changed and other teams have caught up with stronger midfields and have superceded the way the game is played. There's no Angus around the place either, and no ANB. Charlie Spargo hasn't played for almost a whole season. People are banging on about a review of the club but I'll bet that Goody and his assistants are reviewing how they want the team to play and how the midfield can catch up to the rest. That's what we can hope for (along with some strong recruiting from JT and Lamb).

I have no connections with the club, I have explained my views about a review did you read it, all I ask is show proof of mismanagement and then I will have no problem having  a review of the board I just don't don't go believing in heresy.

You might want to check the wording or rephrase that remark.

  5. Fun fact about the Casey Demons and the fractured VFL fixture:

Last week, Casey played Brisbane up north and there was something about the game that bothered me and I couldn't work out exactly what it was. Then I realised that Casey had already played against Brisbane earlier in the season (it was Round 8). What's strange about this is that there are more teams than rounds so why would you play one team twice? Then I discovered that Casey also plays Footscray a second time in Round 19 and that they don't play Geelong, Southport, Sydney Swans and Werribee at all this season.

This isn't a competition - it's Mickey Mouse club stuff!

I don't think we can underestimate the loss of Salem on top of Bowey and Brayshaw. Howes and McVee have been playing well this year but they we under siege and we really need some experience to quell the influence of McCluggage, Bailey and Cameron.

Speaking of Brayshaw, when is the AFL going to make a decision on the situation regarding whether the payout on his contract is included in our salary cap?

Surely, this impacts on the club's recruiting through the midseason draft if it wants to go down that path?

  7. It's not just because he's tipping us but because he understands what culture means in a club. Think back 12-15 months ago and Collingwood who had issues with De Goey and Ginnivan as well as ongoing off field issues with racism. The club dealt with those things while the playing group kept its eyes on the ball and played the game the way it should be played.

Concerned about culture? Think a club like North Melbourne with its many young players, the very talented player they just lost and the bloke who's coaching them. Good Lord!

  8. I once asked the question at an AGM about Irish recruits and was told it was an expensive exercise. It might have been 10 -15 years ago but if you pick the right player it can be a bonanza.

I haven't been down to Goschs but I'm intrigued by Lord Nev's observation as he drove down Punt Road this morning that ... "all the players were out, all the cones etc were setup and there looked to be an electronic scoreboard/screen setup - probably about 3m x 2m as a really rough guess."

Kev Martin's gone on holiday till next year ... is there anyone who can enlighten us about this strange phenomenon?

For that matter, any other news from the Paddock?
