I like Vanders and his story of making it back is great.  But his game was below what we wanted.  But is that also occurring with no ressie's comp to condition a player for the 1st's.  Mus be hard playing nothing and then stepping.

Not half as good a story as Nathan Jone's though.

Agreed that VDB is not mu h chop but I wAnt to point out that last week many were saying harmes should be dropped and is no good. Even LJ was mentioned being dropped a couple of weeks ago.

    Both killed it last night.

Yeah,  but Harmes( and Melksham) have demonstrated their worth over the journey.

How long ago is it ,if ever, that Vanders has done so?

Harmes and Melksham don't get in the way if they are playing a bad game.

VDB doesn't have a good game any more  if he ever did..His body has never let him.

I only mentioned Jones , who I acknowledged was also  off the pace to emphasise the futility of persevering with Vandenberg.

Don't get me started on Weideman   but Vander's aggression and Spargos game brain  on Weids skills base would be an AFL grade player.

Otherwise, if picked, they are the bottom 3 that defines the teams likelihood to win the flag

Jones might be only best 24 but he's not an impediment the way VDB is .

I won’t be popular for saying it, but I never thought Jones was that good – he was just in a very poor team. I don’t think he chases nearly hard enough, and that is such a major part of our game.

I have always liked VDB but he wasn’t great last night, but given the amount of football he has missed in the last year or so, he was always going to be very rusty. I say, give him another chance because his capacity to stick a tackle and hurt with it is enormously helpful to us.

When was the last time Vanders WAS great?

He turns " run" into sludge and his disposal is 2 seasons old.

But yeah ,Viney will come back in to run headlong onto ever pack he sees and Sparrow and Jordan are ahead of Jones.

Neither. Too slow. Our game is built on defensive pressure. I’d have Sparrow ahead of them both. Viney will come straight back in to, so unless we have a lot of injuries I think they are both well down the pecking order.

I think we planned for a very wet night last night, and might have been surprised at how dry the game became in the 2nd quarter. VDB got the nod for the rain, and that reason alone.

    Sparrow played last night

  5. Fair dinkum Vanders is a lumbering liability and still has the skill and decision making deficit of the earlier Goodwin Demons iteration.

Someone said yesterday the game has passed him by.

I said  the same thing about Jones  after the Finals win at the G in ...( whenever it was;who can tell these days?) against Hawthorn ,but seriously does anyone not think he would be a better inclusion than the frustration  that is Vanders. He can stop any fluid ball movement without even trying

    But Nathan Jones?

A red hot go (firstly as the medical sub), he can kick a goal and he would give it full throttle like no other player on the list to get a shot at the flag in his last game.

It wouldn't even be sentimental  (unless he holds the Cup), just a smart move

The tackle then the trash talk has been posted on here and talked about a lot, but yes at the end of the half right after Trac kicks that goal Selwood goes after Kozzie and Oliver intervenes.

Sounds like they may have been at each other all game.   God bless Kozzie for showing no respect to that diving cheat.

I saw Jones having a long friendly exchange with Selwood post siren.

You guys need to grow up

Unpopular suggestion perhaps, but I don’t think NJ’s looming 300th game should be a factor at all in team selection. Form, and form only.

Ok  on form in a team that's winning and with  no one kicking the door down to get in  he stays in indefinitel

its amazing its even being spoken about.

Last season and the one before he looked vulnerable because he needed to do more for a crepe team.

He fits in just fine at present

If anyone is talking us up then they aren’t true rusted on Melbourne fans. I’ve been happy with our wins, but they’ve been far from polished wins and they’ve been against average to decent opposition. Sydney beating the tigers at the G was a much bigger win to put a team in the frame than us beating an ego-bruised but wounded Giants in Canberra.

I wouldn’t say we’ve beaten nobody, if our three wins were Kangaroos, Essendon, and Hawthorn then I’d be saying we haven’t beaten anyone of note. But Freo gave us trouble last year, Saints have always had something over us and played finals last year, while GWS have some absolutely guns and were copping a belting from the media. All three were both winnable and losable, but guess what, we won!

A little kind but fair enough.

I would say we look very vulnerable to good sides and still lack speed and basic ball skills.

The " new " AFL  game style doesn't suit us

Call me a bit old fashioned  but Nathan Jones quite frankly should be given respect by us all on here.  We all on here have suffered miserably over the years supporting our not so mighty dees, and so too have many of the players.  None more so than him. Same as TMac and Jetta.  Warriors, for us, all of them . Jones deserves his 300th and I'm sure he'll earn it.

I suspect plenty of the school boys on here didn't see Jones when he couldn't kick straight but still managed to carry the team  essentially on his own, for what seemed like decades. Best 23 should earn that fella a game every week for a while longer and give the spuds around  here some time to do some historical  MFC research after they've done their homework and  chores for mum.

At least he can slot a goal now  and get in a chain instead of trying to do too much, even if its in the twilight  ( smile )

I agree here and im a big fan, but he has to clean up some off his kicking

" some of" ." Most of" more likely

If if wasn't for Hunt stinking up his run with his kicking we'd setting loose the hounds onto Brayshaw.

Only Cam Bruce could  kick more up and unders   but he' d perfected the helicopter

    Ridiculous

Jones hit up Jackson for a textbook I50 and goal at the start of the 2nd

Also had 7 score involvements and played well as an inside competitor in fwd half

Its remarkable given the commitment and  service  Jones has given,  carrying a crap team on his shoulders for about 15 years that he gets so little respect from the cheap seats on here.

Obviously they want to get him to 300 games ( well duh) and he's only just best 22 but he's still going better relative to his best form than Neitz was when MFC gifted him his 300.

Get rid of Spargo. Hes played his 2 good games for the year

Most of these guys would have no trouble getting a kick under no pressure to within a couple of metres of a team mate standing 40 metres away

The problem is in my opinion is not so much about technique but what is going on in their heads

Think golfer on tee who rarely hits a ball off line until he gets to his bogey hole - there he regularly hooks the ball into a hazard - not because of technique so much but because he is focused on missing the fairway

Fritsch always looks to me that he is over thinking every kick - if he ignored the goal posts and just imagined he was kicking to a team mate behind the goals he might just find things turned around quickly

Frisco just needs a normal hair cut so he won't be embarrassed that everyone is looking at him

Max must be licking his lips again.  (mods - I dont think this deserves it own topic, please put this topic somewhere else if it fits)

Three weeks in a row he has opponents who are very junior in skill and experience.

    • Lloyd Meek for Freo
    • Paul Hunter for saints
    • and possible Matt Flynn this week v GWS.

Might get some more experience against the Cats but I don't rate Rhys Stanley.

Max did well on the weekend, but hoping he starts really hurting teams soon.

Tell me how you reckon Max can really hurt these teams.

He could start by tapping to a mfc player  more often rather the technically " to advantage "

Not me. Gus is a shadow of the player he was. Slow, poor disposal, hardly gets the ball.

When he does get the ball he still mostly kicks it up in the air in the general direction that we are headed.

That much hasn't changed  and if he comes good then there will just be a lot more if that.

Surely Jones is an automatic  " in " (given theyre 2 zip ) for the next four or so games ; as he should be .

He's still best 22 while Vanders, the only one who can miss a pass more often than Chunk, is best 30

  15. When Trac can do in 30 touches what Dusty does in 25 then his name can go on the same page.

Same with Oliver...if he can "win " a game with his 35 then he's a genuine A grader matching Dusty's 25 possessions and timely goals.

    Reality checks all round please
