  1. Its Simon Eishold and Tony Elshaug.

I dont think we would have got close to Carlton in 1987 after the PF punch out with Hawthorn.

Northey would have fumed over an Irishman crossing over the mark.

As I recall Northey gave Stynes a frightful bake in the change rooms after the game, which he subsequently apologized for some days or weeks later. I may be corrected on that but pretty sure that's what happened.

  2. I have vague memories of a game in 1997 (Yes, I'm a baby compared to some of you) against the Eagles but most of my early footy memories are in 1998. A game against Essendon when they thrashed us by 60+ points and I balled my eyes out for the rest of the trip home. Meeting David Schwarz (who was injured at the time) in an elevator before a game and turning as red as a tomato while my dad politely introduced me to him and I could barely mumble a 'hello'. And Jeff Farmers screamer against the tigers (who we thrashed!) - my dad later convinced me that he was screaming "BROCCOLI" when he took the mark (because that's what gave him the strength to take marks like that) and since then I've always eaten my broccoli.

Favourite Players: Gary Lyon and Matthew Febey (because we had the same name).

    Love the 'broccoli' bit.

    Your name is Matthew Febey?

  3. 1987 - Round 18 v Brisbane Bears at the MCG

Went along with the old man and his close friend for the first time, watching the Demons roll a sheizen Bears outfit by 54 points in front of a paltry home crowd at the G. We were sitting well out of the top 5 at the time and Dad's mate earned a rebuke for telling me in jest that 'this was the start of our march to the finals'.

    Little did we know ....

I'll never forget that fairy tale run. Some of the best, most exciting weeks of my life. Anyone who witnessed that run will always believe that until you're mathematically out of it, you're never out of it.

  4. Not as funny as to fantasise what the issue is/was even when it has been clearly explained a number of times.

The issue is that the artist formerly known as Range Rover can lay claim to the greatest victory in the history of Demonland.

This has been brought up a number of times but it is worth mentioning again.

  5. Well, I'm yet to meet a young one :-)

It really doesn't matter what Sheedy says as, true or not, TS is at their club now and no-one stands to gain (or lose) anything by Melbourne spreading such rumours if as he claims, they were unfounded.

I suppose there is the slightest of chances that the injury was fabricated as a reason for dropping him if knowledge existed at the time of his upcoming defection, but that is highly unlikely - I do recall there were however, a few of the "TS is leaving" camp, who did actually espouse that theory... maybe it's not just Sheedy who is barking mad? ;-)

Why is it 'highly unlikely' that a fabrication - whoeverso generated it - of that sort might've occurred?

I guess it's as 'highly unlikely' as the original assertions by the TS is staying crowd that the boy wonder would never depart.

The gall to call out those few of us who were on to it from day dot as 'barking mad' is hilarious.

  6. One of my favourite players. When I was a kid having a kick I used to mimick B.Lovett. I even sticked my butt and hips out, acknowledging that B.Lovett's was most effective in keeping his feet and shaking off would be tacklers. Unfortunately I didn't have the mullet of curls to go with it.

Just like I would mimick another, skip and twirl the pill a la G.Lyon lining up for goal late 80's.

Strange indeed. But I loved it.

Ahhh it's off season reminiscing time ...

    B. Lovett was a beauty. Loved it heavy under foot and you're right, one of the all-time great exponents of standing up in a tackle before giving off to advantage.

  7. Not sure if this has been mentioned anywhere else, but Sam Blease has got his favourite number (17) for next season. Sam's dad wore number 17 and Sam wore it right through his junior career. Good luck Sam, we haven't had too many great 17's in my lifetime. Except Kelvin Clarke of course.

    Brett Lovett !!

    * Damn you pipped me Franky.

  8. YES.

It's the most stupid inane meaningless cliche.

Then when people think 110% is cliched so they push it up to 115% or 120%!!

    The stupidity of it all!

I don't understand why anyone would have an issue with the "fat side" or "stoppage".

It's like having an issue with a player being described as a "tagger" - they describe particular aspects of the game.

If you like, we could go more american and use the term "weak side" instead?

What would you prefer? Since these things don't have other terms to use as an alternative.

    "The Phil Scully side"

  9. Long felt that $cully became Sheedy's obsession .

We knocked Sheedy back as a player in the 60's and then knocked him back as a Coach .

He's has a ruthless , nasty , vindictive streak that knows no bounds - rat cunning is the best way to describe him .

These sort of people hold grudges forever - lets just hope it all turns to ..................

I agree. But decisions made in anger ... and I think there was more than a hint of vengeance in the way Sheedy engineered this ... can have a nasty way of going pear-shaped. Let's hope so in this instance.

  10. I said "why would anyone want to leave Serenity" and that, to Joss Whedon fans, is a ironic show of unearned faith that there is nowhere better to be than the place you are at.

Subtlety is lost on you though...

That's a tad rich coming from someone who missed, or refused to acknowledge, almost every less-than-subtle clue as to what was going on throughout the season.

And Joss Whedon can bite my crank

  11. And that is why you fail... lol I always maintained he could go - I just trusted the kid that he didn't sign when you said (via David Schwarz (via god knows who)) that he signed in October 2010. And then when he did go - all Range Rovers/Yodas christmasses came at once...

Blahh ... whatever helps you get through the day

Btw you didn't always maintain he could go. In the beginning you were totally adamant that anyone who doubted him was off their rocker. With each passing week you took a step down your ladder.

  12. Here we go again, hmm? The Melbourne Football Club was not complicit in any HWMNBN shenanigans. I couldn't care less about an effing GWS player anymore, but don't you tell me the club knew of the betrayal and kept it quiet to keep up appearances or whatever wafer-thin reason you can think up.

I fail to understand how you can be so forthright with your views on this subject when you got the result so completely wrong.

  13. Fair points Yoda....And i certainly am not disagreeing with you, but as i have hilighted your point above..There are ways of finding these things out...and as T$ has such a strong personality with the right methods, we could have dodged a bullet much earlier..as it certainly did drain a lot of energy from the club, in hindsight i admit.

Body Language is a truly fascinating subject and i would love to closely study that March 5 Media Conference again..it would have told a lot.

I have no doubt T$ was put in a very awkward situation...but he should never have done that Conference.

That conference can be found with a quick Google search and does make for interesting viewing the second time around. I think it was AmericadeCali who first picked up on it but you do get the distinct vibe that he was 'coached' to give specific answers. He did it very well but there are certainly a few giveaways in his body language that become apparent with a second, post-facto viewing.

Regarding researching top draft talent, I do wonder sometimes what lengths they go to to talk to the parents of these kids prior to selecting them. One wonders if a few surreptitious conversations with Fill Scully over some beers mightn't have raised a few early red flags.

  14. Let's wait & see....I think a lot can be learnt from this entire transaction. It is different to all others. What you say above, i agree with....But it is not the same as this one. The Club i hope becomes stronger because of it, as i said the day it happened, but that still does not stop the bad feeling i get from the whole shady affair. During 2011 i sat on the fence, seriously changing my opinion as certain snippets came through, but Range Rover was dead right all along, and even though he carried on like a pork chop in the aftermath & did himself no respect i give him some credit....The signs were there from way back...& the MFC was not educated enough to pick it up...no matter what we offered he would not have stayed. At least we saved money.

Not to want to harp on this subject but I'm obviously well acquainted with Range Rover. I'm quite confident that he was on the money most of the year but I think it's wrong to say the MFC weren't on to it as well fairly early on. I think they were and then did what they had to do - play it with a straight bat and make the best of a bad situation ... a season-long 'black cloud' as Schwab put it.

But I think it's wrong to suggest that there was anything at all we could have done to avert what happened. You could've sent the entire Purana Taskforce in to interrogate the kid before the 2009 draft and he wouldn't have blinked. He's just got that type of personality.

It was just bad luck, or karma, whichever way you want to look at it. Some have even ventured to say losing him will be a blessing in disguise. I think this is a stretch but it remains to be seen.

Btw ... Range Rover sends a belated apology for his post-victory histrionics. But can you blame the guy? He was sent to the sin-bin no less than three times for standing up to the Man!

  15. to say we wasted a number 1 draft pick is very stupid, we had our number 1 turned into 7+8 or something like that, which could end up being a winner, especially if 'the [censored] breaks down with injury his whole career which is distinctly possible also, there is no way we would have Mitch Clark if 'the [censored]' had decided to soak up all that cash we offered him.. so if Clark ends up being an important player to us you can chalk that up us a win too i'm at peace with it

If it was 7+8 it would be palatable but from my understanding its more likely to be 12+18 or something like that.

    Can anyone enlighten?

  16. I attended the GWS annual corporate lunch about a month or so ago. I have to say, I was pretty impressed. There were about 850 people there, and it was really well organised. The stadium and the facilities look good, and their membership base appears to be tracking well.

Everyone was giving me carp about GWS landing Scully, to which I said to all - you can have him - I just wish the MFC didn't waste our number one pick on him. Left a bad taste though.

Amongst other things, Sheedy spoke to the audience about the club's recruiting. Tongue in cheek, he kept saying the recruiters did a great job and they didn't really let him know who they'd recruited. It was 100% clear that the Scully deal was sewn up a very long time before he 'officially' signed the contract. What really p1ssed me off was how smug they were about it all.

As an aside, I was in NYC last week and had several beers with Andrew Mackie (Geelong player). Good bloke.

He said that, in his opinion, it was not such a bad result for the MFC in losing Scully, as the Dees would've had to have paid stupid money to keep him and that would've stuffed up our list management completely. He seemed to suggest that a lot of players were offered ridiculous money to go to GWS (as you'd expect), but he didn't think it would be good form to take the dough, leave your team mates and your club. A future leader of the club wouldn't do that - unsurprisingly, he really rated Jack Trengove.

He also said that Mitch Clark is the one of the hardest players to match up against - hates playing on him. Rated him very highly, but said he's still a bit inconsistent. In short, reckons he was a top get for the club and that his best years are still ahead of him.

Also said that he's close to Ken Hinkley, and the feeling amongst the coaches was that of all the clubs looking for a new coach this year, the MFC was the club to land. It has a young talented list with an enormous upside that hasn't been realised yet. Thought there was a big leadership vacuum at the club though - but, given the relative youth of the list, it's a very malleable list that can be moulded really well. Reckons Neeld will be a really good coach, and we could see a very different team in the next few years. Need to change the club culture, and he should be able to influence that.

All pretty obvious stuff I suppose, but thought some of you may be interested nonetheless.

Great read Ron. Mackie's views on us are very interesting and noteworthy coming from such a quality player. Probably slips under the guard with all of the other stars at Geelong but he sits comfortably as a champion alongside all of them.

GW$' culture of smugness and fib-telling will eventually come back to bite them on the bum.
