I'll be the odd man out here, but when he was in the ruck was when Freo looked most dangerous.

He really opens the game up for the mids.

As I said previously, I would love him back...

Agree, he’s not Max(nobody is) but he offers a lot and points of difference. Freo may now improve by fate rather then strategy.

Darcy, Jackson, Treacy, Amiss and Voss is way too top heavy and why 62 inside F50 entries equates to last nights score.

I think Darcy being injured and Amiss so out of form will see Jackson, Treacy and Voss as the talls they go with producing a match better balance

Clarrie played at his peak capacity in that 3rd quarter but obviously can’t sustain that level of intensity for 4 quarters atmo. This must have something to do with his lack of fitness and why he’s spending more time on the bench. The coaches would absolutely know where he’s at and what he is capable of right now. Whether he reaches his former stellar performance levels remains to be seen. Perhaps we have seen the very best of Clarrie but his next best is still better than most mids in the comp. His current handball to kick ratio in his last 2 games indicates he is trying to execute the revised game plan.

Yes agree, however I see his progress w in terms of glimpses of his former self and especially buying into team structure as a big positive

Good point Pennant, but maybe the MC want to see that side of his footy all the time? Especially from the get-go

We've seen Viney turn his season around once we re-designed his role (tagging and run with) ... and Petracca just needed to regain his confidence again (that's happening)

Gawn has lifted big time and Rivers is using the ball really well now instead of bombing it. As are a number of others

But that's just the footballing side of things

The MH issues that Clarrie is battling is a completely different story of which we know very little about ... and the media should be observing his privacy right now. They observe that privacy with other players

To be fair, it's only a few in the media acting up (this time)

Agree totally media should be respecting his privacy

From a footballing point of view Clarrie's best game in terms of being a team player and getting back to his old self was against Fremantle

Didn't bomb it long and his stats read as 5 kicks & 20 handpasses. I felt his game took a big step in the right direction

Against Richmond a few long bombs returned and he ended up on the bench for 24% of the time (9 kicks & 13 handpasses)

So the break could also be form related but Clarrie has obviously got some issues where privacy should be observed

I wish him well and hope he is back playing footy sooner rather than later

He was however the Clarrie of old in that 3rd quarter against Richmond. He showed what an impact he can have when he is on

Have you seen much of Benji mate?

Yes, come on a lot in the last 12 months after long period out of the game. Ruck craft is developing nicely has soft hands and starting to move a lot better around the ground as he grows into his body. Can also rest forward and impact the scoreboard. Currently around the 203cm height with some more growth to come I would suspect

Oddly (pun not intended) we were $3.30 for this game before we beat West Coast.

Then after we beat West Coast the odds blew out to about $3.70, before Hawthorn played their game.

I think a lot of that would have been based on Petty out of the clash

Benji Van Rooyen (the younger brother) in 26 and Axel Walsh in 27.

Cooper Ramsey late/rookie prospect this year. Basketball convert when he was 16

Just throwing in a data point after my earlier blues comparison:

Tom Hawkins over his first 5 years kicked 107 goals in 79 games (average 1.35pg). Went on to kick nearly 800 snags at 2.22pg.

JVR is in his 3rd year and averages 1.35pg.

Good point he took backward steps in 2010 and had big question marks on him but really blossomed from late 2011 onwards despite being a Premiership player in 2009

We were at Casey when we won the flag.

Can the hand wringers remind themselves of that when they self-flagellate/copulate on this topic? Thanks!!

Hadn’t you heard from the wise on this site, we fluked that

  10. Has Howes been confirmed as coming in, if not JVR can play down back with Turner and Tmac for Waterman, Reid and Williams.

Query on that though is does that impact our ball movement if we don’t go with Howes

I dont see those traits in Sharp at all so we'll agree to disagree.

Also, this last paragraph is in my kind opinion, pretty irrelevant on any footy related discussion regardless on what level of footy I've played at.

My views on footy should be seen as equal to yours and every other footy head on here Dub.

I did after he laid 5 tackles and kicked 2 goals against Essendon.

I thought finally he was heading on the right track until Goodwin said he needed to work on his defensive side of the game in a press game interview against Freo.. confusing, but okay..

Thats why each week selection becomes confusing. I then watch him against GWS in the VFL and he barely got out of second gear and laid 1 tackle for the whole game.

You then can't tell me his selection was justified off the back of that performance compared to JVR's 5 goal effort against Richmond.

Once again this also shows the complete lack of support for Max Gawn regardless of how well he's playing. Matthew Lloyd was correct last week, the fact that we are still heavily relying on a 33 year champ who's got no back up whatsoeveris a huge concern.

Petty is not a ruckman at all and we saw that last year when he got absolutely monstered by Darcy, so I have no idea what plan B is when Gawn needs a spell or heavin forbid he gets injured.

The Eagles don’t have Darcy as their first ruck let alone their second and as we know Fritsch only came in because Melk got injured against Freo.

Based on as you’ll say the exposed form in the seniors vs Essendon, Fritsch’s form had improved whilst JVR was still underperforming and devoid of confidence

Surely you understand the potential for Melk to play a defensive forward role on McGovern or Reid along with Sparrow. Which is probably why he came in

JVR may still come in the way the weather forecast has changed for Saturday night and I’m still not convinced on Mays fitness

The comparison to ANB even if you were comparing back to his earlier career is actually a slap to the face to Nibbler.

Sharp should not even be remotely be compared to Sharp at any length or put in the same category. ANB even in his debut year showed more promise than Sharp has his entire career, we all saw the glimpses especiallyafter his 3 goal effort against Geelong. By Nibblers 3rd year he had consolidated himself as a best 22 player in our line-up.

Sharp is barely suburban level standard and hasn't shown any glimpse or ability that makes you think he'll grow into a solid AFL career.

Nah hang on.. see thats where selection integrity has to be questioned.

Why should certain players get a far more better leeway treatment compared to the guy that actually played into form unlikethe guy that didn't and still got a call up. Not only did he get a call up but his lack of defensive pressure and 0 tackles was once again on show.

Our tackling forward half pressure against Fremantle was the best i had seen since close to 2021 early 2022. That's why it made complete sense why both JVR and Fritsch were dropped.

What didn't make sense and is even more perplexing, is that you give one bloke only a week in the reserves who mind you was still poor, compared to the guy in his second VFL level actually hits form with scoreboard pressure.

Don't get me wrong, I understand the need for a fully in form Fritsch is still important to our line up.. but he still needs to earn his way back like every other Joe blow has to in the reserves and prove how desperate he is to earn his sport. I did not see that once when he played against GWS in the VFL.

Yet you actually criticised Goodwin for dropping Fritsch for the Fremantle game

I thought I heard that it was going to be wet on Saturday night in Perth, smallish team might be a master move.

That’s the forecast although it’s changing, think they’ll see how the weather is and potentially make a late change

  14. 3 hours ago, DubDee said:

Don’t think JVR and Melk were really competing for the same spot.

With our new game plan, I think we need Melk with his great kicking and fast ball movement.

But I am surprised we are going so short up front

He’ll play as a defensive forward on either McGovern to prevent intercepts or on Reid who has been playing off half back

A sensible tactical decision like that isn’t really in Goodwin’s wheelhouse.

Stupid comment given his roles of the last two games against Serong and Tarranto.

Also when taking into account as you’ll be aware (as I’m sure you’ve sat in numerous selection meetings) that Reid has been playing off half back and the FD discussion will be whether to play Viney on him or give that role to a forward and get Viney to run with Kelly

Usual beat up nonsense from Caro

Boils down to the LG meeting with coaches as they are winless and playing terribly. You'd be shocked if there wasn't such meeting happening regularly

Yet according to Caro, they met the week after the Essendon game which was their best performance for the year

If the forecast holds it won't be raining and as you say optus drains well (too well?) and its going to be 22 so hopefully conditions will be pretty good come game time.

    Are you going PSD?

I hope the rain is gone and we get another opportunity to continue with the implementation of the game plan. I think if we continue with the quick ball movement and high pressure we will get the win, but they are a different side at home and we don’t want to give them a sniff because they are hungry for their first win under Mini.

I won’t be going we have a late game Saturday so coaching duties for me, and with start times for both games meaning I won’t see any of it until watching the replay

It will be interesting to see how we play: Transition vs Territory.

On Friday McCrae said something like: when its wet you can't play the transition game, you play a territory game which I read as: reduce risk, don't be cute (ie HB) with the ball and get it forward by any means possible.

That isn't rocket science but knowing when to switch and being able to execute switch in game is the key. Having the very savvy Pendlebury mastering the troops and knowing when to switch is an enormous asset.

If it is wet and we stick to our new transition game we might get trounced.

Agree with McRae, don’t over possess in the wet, move it forward and apply pressure to the opposition. Nothing worse when you’re defending then being under pressure in the wet and the Eagles are vulnerable to the ground ball game in their D50.

Although the forecast is from 5 days out and Optus drains off very well

Those who didn’t attend the match but watched on 7 saw Fritta and his partner nursing a baby. Two weeks old! First child I believe . History is full of examples of sportspeople going off the boil when a baby is due/ recently born. Give him another week or two, see what happens

No it’s not, he hasn’t brought intensity or 1%ers for the last 2 years. It’s harsh but a fact
