  1. Was watching his game & Viney's on the weekend & a thought crept into my head. Todd Viney was one of the great leaders of our club through the 90s but only captained for 2 years because of Gaz being such a magnificent leader. Is history repeating. Could Jonesy be skipper for the rest of this decade & Jack, who oozes leadership, will end up skipper in the twilight of his career. Whichever way it ends up no one can question the leadership of the club & I don't just mean the skippers.

Todd was named Vice Captain in his second year at the club, after just 13 games, which shows just how highly regarded he was after crossing over from SA.

For whatever reason, he was replaced by Danny Hughes in 1989.

I was a big fan of Viney Snr but I've seen enough after 20 games to be confident that Jack will be the better player. His disposal is far better than Todd's, who wasn't really a great user of the footy until the twilight of his career.

  2. Just noticed this in the following article on Real Footy Demons Improvements Lift Spirits:

...In more promising news for the Dees, young forward Jesse Hogan, who has battled a back complaint this season, is likely to return to training this week after a two-week holiday at home in Perth.

“Obviously being the promising young player he [Hogan] is, he’s going to be a very good player, we just want to make sure he gets 100 per cent right before we push him back into it,” Fitzpatrick said.

“He’s back at the club now and hopefully he can build up and see how he goes.”

Same article says that Viv Michie has yet to make his debut and Aidan Riley is going well at the Scorpions.

  3. Brad Green came up with this ripper a few years ago during Women's Round:

"I think it's only a matter of time before a woman or someone with a woman's background gets a senior coaching job in the AFL."

  4. Watts put in a good last quarter. We all know he must've been fresh because his effort in the first 3 was typically ordinary.

We must have been at different games because his intensity and effort was right there from the get-go, and he never took the foot off the pedal after that.

  5. The 'holding the ball' interpretation is the closest thing to a random outcome you can get.

You can run 10 metres, be stripped of the ball without disposing of it properly, and it's called play on, yet find yourself at the bottom of a pack without any chance to get it out and you might be pinged. Absurd.

If shitty umpiring is consistent you can live with it but if you change the the rules during the game then you [censored] it up.

    Spot on.

  6. Big win in front of a big crowd at the 'G - gotta love that !

Boys seem to be really enjoying their footy, and each other.

Most importantly, we snared the 4 points; it would have been easy to settle for honourable losses this year, it's awesome to get the reward for our hard work and effort.

  7. I guess that is what privilege is all about.

Nah, we just hold ourselves to a higher standard of debate on here Nut - Demonland is the Algonquin round table compared to what goes on in Parliament

  8. I used to love listening to him on the old ABC 3LO football broadcast.

Tim Lane, Peter Booth and Stan Alves would cover the match of the day, and Tommy and Swan McKay would provide updates and analysis from the next biggest game.

He had a lovely voice, sounded like it had endured a lifetime of whiskey and cigarettes rather than endless cups of tea.

One of the game's truly great characters.

    RIP
