The mistake was that long loopy handball from Oliver to Sparrow. 2nd mistake was Sparrow handballing it to Gawn. 3rd mistake was Gawn not being able to hand ball through one player. I mean you cannot make this crap up.

Oliver had to turn and break through the traffic  or give it to Viney on the inside.

Plenty of times we got first use in the middle and did nothing with it. Fix that up and we win the game.

    A premiership team doesn't lose 3 in a row don't you know..

The biggest thing I take from that is they had a 17 day break during their bye! We have a 9 day break before being sent all over Australia for a month or so.

You're delusional. We are fighting to stay in touch with teams. We've been outscored by 20 goals in the second half over three weeks. That's about a three goal deficient average EVERY third and fourth quarter. That's not just a slump. The season is done. We have Brisbane next lol

Things haven't looked good the last 3 weeks (even the couple before that). But this team and coaches have earnt the benefit of the doubt, I'll wait and see how the next 2 months play out before freaking out and declaring us gone.

We lost to the Pies last year in a game that was extremely frustrating and went on to win the flag. We're still 2nd (0.2% off 1st) after 13 games and will be back on top if we beat the Lions in 9 days.

I was going to go to this game, only to find out the carpark is shut except for permit and disability. Not going to bother driving the 1.5-2hours and then try to find street parking somewhere. And the train is more expensive than driving for me. What’s the thinking having the ground closed for a game like this?

They shut the car park now for any game expected to have a crowd bigger than 70k. It was closed against the Dogs and Tigers earlier this year too.

They did this after that psycho drove down Bourke St a few years back to protect large crowds from a similar incident at the footy 🙄

  5. I really don't care what footy players do in their spare time as long as they're not hurting anyone and not impacting their performance.

Smith will cop it now but supporters would be extremely naive to think their club would be a cleanskin when it comes to narcotics/opiates etc

To be honest you'd almost rather players do coke or weed rather than drink booze or eat junk food as far as the impact on their health goes.

I do agree, but I don't think honestly that I would have, then, at that age, and in those circumstances.I must relate it to then, or else I wouldn't be being honest with myself.

What, when you were 30? You must have matured at a different rate because most guys I know knew this by the time they were 20 if not earlier.

Interestingly we lead the league in tackles inside 50, have conceded the fewest amount of points (even with a full game more on a quarter of the league who had the bye last round) and along with Collingwood are one of the best intercept teams in the league.

We are one of the worst tackling and worst pressure act teams (pressure act being chasing a team from behind). It could well be the way we play in that we rarely need to chase. Teams out tackle us given we are near the top in contested possessions and disposals. We win and have more of the ball overall. We also go forward more than any other team.

It could explain why our games haven't looked "good" all year. They have almost always seemed like grinds and they really have been.

Suggesting Collingwood "should" win though is a stretch. Why?

Teams have also played a lot of possession footy against us (Essendon, Port, Hawks etc) meaning less opportunity for pressure acts.

Based on what has been said and what I have read so far, I have no problem whatsoever about Melksham taking a swing at May.

Any player drunk or sober would have been quite within his right to do the same, and to actually say that, the person who copped it should have been aware of what might have been coming, drunk or sober as well

I regard this comment as tantamount to calling someone somewhat inadvertently a coward, and I presume Melksham took it that way as well.

I may be wrong with this so be it but no one is perfect

Electing to physically assault someone, let alone someone recovering from concussion, let alone your teammate should be the absolute last resort. If you are defending yourself for example. Punching someone in the head because they said some mean things is not on.

That's not to excuse May's behaviour but there are other ways to resolve conflicts.

  9. Can't wait til May returns against the Lions in a couple of weeks, hopefully the crowd gets behind him as well. He is an essential part of our success, not just his ability but his mentality. Like it or not his ruthless attitude is exactly what this club has been missing for a long time and I can't wait til he is back out on the field I know he will be itching to get back out there.

I'm more surprised that all of these sort of incidents (and even rumours of events) aren't thoroughly investigated by the AFL as good governance.  Surely as soon as an whisper of off field event comes to light, shouldn't the AFL be on the phone to clubs to find out whats gone on?  This announcement of an investigtion seems to be nothing than pandering to the media.

Don't investigate something if you don't know what the answer is going to be. Investigating the De Goey incident had the potential to open a massive can of worms.

I am not sure why people find it hard to believe why numbers are down in attendance. We had 2 years of being discouraged / banned from going,  tv became the only way and a controlling body that does everything it can to suit the broadcast media. Surprise surprise the population have found a different cheaper way to view the game.

Surely after 2 years of being stuck at home people are itching to get off the couch!

If we lose Monday, the Melb V Bris game could go from 40K (if we we’re 13-0 OR 12-1) to 25K.

I expect the crowd on Monday will be low 70’s which is of not help to our back account.

The Brisbane game will be lucky to crack 20k if we lose Monday I reckon unless 5k Brisbane supporters show up. Thursday night in the middle of winter is ****house fixturing, thanks AFL

Also Dogs coming off a grand final are fourth last!

Kanagroos future looking grim. They’re about to be passed by expansion clubs in attendance 😧

Dogs have played 2 games in Ballarat (10k and 6k attendances).

North/Hawks games in Tassie. These obviously impact the average attendance numbers.

Is it possible that I (an MFC member who attends) am being scolded for poor attendance by someone who was not at the game?

I was at the game. I've been to every game in Melbourne this year (including the North game at Docklands which some Melbourne supporters seem to think is played in China).

I'm not scolding you. I'm scolding the supporters who weren't there.

I think Christian's comments are an indication that he is open to the wider debate (beyond MFC). He is responding to the notion that overall crowd figures are down. He is giving the broad player perspective that big crowds fire up the players. He wants bigger crowds.

Listen to the clip - he is clearly talking specifically about Melbourne supporters.

  16. 16 minutes ago, waynewussell said:

I'm simply pointing out that, by comparison in this downturn of attendances (the reasons for which I have previously hypothesised), MFC is holding up well... Your serve Dr.

It's BS. If the positions were reversed and we were languishing in 16th while Essendon were on top after winning last years flag do you think the numbers would be comparable? The amount of justification and finger pointing/deflection by Melbourne supporters is laughable.

Christian Petracca has commented on it in a public forum. But sure, just tell him how great our crowds are compared to 1965 and how Essendon crowds aren't as good or how it was Easter Saturday or its a night game or its a day game or it finishes too late or starts too early or its too cold or its too hot or the moon is half full or Jupiter is in Capricorn or or or

These are the 2022 attendance figures for Victorian clubs at home v Freo

    MFC 29812

    Essendon 23935

    Geelong 20136

Melbourne - reigning premier, 10-2, 1st on the ladder

Essendon - a rabble for 20 years, 16th on the ladder, one win for the season

Geelong - playing at Kardinia Park during redevelopments - 23k capacity

The whataboutism is ridiculous. Just admit the Melbourne crowds this year are anywhere on a scale from disappointing to embarrassing instead of pointing fingers. It is so poor our star player has publicly commented on it.

In our most recent post-Premiership year, 1965, our average MCG attendance was 38,928.

This year, 2022, our average MCG attendance is 42,662.

We continue to hold up well when the data is considered!

Yeah and in 1901 we only averaged 8k to our games so things are looking rosy all over really 🙄

Did they really think winning a grand final would change so much?
we missed out on so many generations of kids picking the dees… we need a lot more success over the next few years and decades to get us more fans.
we have an older age supporter base and if They’re  like My nan who’s in her early 80s it’s just to cold.

There are going to be mitigating factors for some but I don't think our supporter base solely resembles the cast of Last of the Summer Wine as some on here would have you believe (cheeky Ricky Gervais reference 😆)

Did we make it to the G on Saturday, Dr? I did, and I, along with the majority of those in MCC area, gave it my all when it came to being noisy. Stop generalising about the crowd.

What are you on about? Our crowds have been pathetic this year, it is not really up for debate. The fact one of our own players has now come out and commented on it is an embarrassment. Reigning premier, top of the ladder and sub-20k MFC supporters attending prime time games. It is a disgrace.
