    A contract is a contract

I meant more at the negotiation stage when the contract is first being worked out. I guess player's agents will usually always push for lots more money, even above market value, which is why it's impressive when some clubs get their existing players to accept slightly less for the greater good (Hawthorn during their flag years, Geelong.. and Richmond now?)

The Grundy Contract is another big part of it

It's ironic that individual player's greed for a lot more money ends up crippling the very club they play for and the chances of a flag. Players talk about how important team success is but then they jeopardise this (I'm sure they can still pay their mortgage and look after their family on say 900k a year compared to 850k)

Anyway looking thru clubs rookie list a couple of names popped up. Thoughts.

    Brody Mihocek

    Sydney Stack

    Tom Atkins

All have been rookies for at least 2 years so either have to agree to stay on rookie list for a 3rd or be upgraded to main list. Or can reject there clubs offers and become a DFA.

Those clubs will sign those players to their main list rather than risk losing them though. Maybe the bulldogs were ok with that defender leaving under this rule as he's not that good.

My main concern is that Smith is at the end of his career and is playing for his pay cheque rather than his future. He has nothing to prove and already has 3 flags under his belt. Hard to imagine him retaining the hunger to maintain form and fitness. He may play a role but will it be enough to make a significant difference?

I disagree that players that have won flags have any less hunger than those without. Exhibit A - Richmond.

If the article is correct and they are paying him $900K for 5 years, then there would be few suitors.  And while the article suggests Collingwood will pay $200K of that, it will still be too big a pill for most clubs to swallow.

Besides...why help them out with their salary cap problems, of their own making?

Shows the risk with long deals. Tmac, Polec etc. When did Treloar sign a new contract with them anyway?

  6. Off the top of my head this how we've fared under free agency:

Players lost - Frawley, Sylvia, Moloney, Rivers

    Players gained - Tomlinson, Byrnes

Compensation - Pick 3 (1st round) for Frawley, Pick 23 (2nd round) for Sylvia, Pick 48 (3rd round) for both Moloney and Rivers (We diluted this compon by stupidly bring in Byrnes the same year)

So even though we've lost some decent players we've probably drawn even by being compensated fairly well, pick 3 for Frawley being the best example.

  7. Sad situation. There was a thread on this on Bigfooty a couple of weeks back. Normally Bigfooty rumours are pretty trashy but looks like someone had a connection with North on this. The media would have been all over it as its hard to keep things like this secret, Caro even mentioned it the other night on Footy Classified with a bit of a freudian slip.

I wondered about that as well DJ. It entrenches the crazy system of the past when there were numerous weeks where players coming Back from injury or dropped for poor form could not get on the field to gain form or return from injury. Seems nuts to me but I have the feeling It is more about the cost of staging the competition than anything. Less games equals lower cost. In the world of 2021 I cannot see there will be the ability to fly around the country like in the past. I still struggle with the cost of having a second level competition that flys around the country. The cost would be substantial.

Hopefully it's just 16 rounds next year because if question marks over Covid, bit goes back to the same amount of rounds as the AFL from 2022.
