I don't understand what you are talking about here.

I'm talking about the 70's arrangements taken off music styles of the early 1900's being dated...not about the lyrics.

I think lyrics (words) and melody are integral to the song and shouldn't be changed, the arrangements are not.

I know I'm probably in the minority but those arrangements are bland to my way of thinking and should be updated.

My, we are a conservative bunch. Tradition from the 70's

...reminds me of a cricket interview recently when the player (can't remember who) said he would hate to see any major changes to the format of the traditional game.

He was talking the one day 50 over format. Traditional I am half in agreeance with you. I remember supporters singing the themes song in the days before the ground p.a coached the crowd when and how many times to sing. What we don't need is new jazzed up 'clean' vocals drowning out the patrons.

They do need to be re done....

The arrangements of the theme songs are so dated.

... but I wouldn't trust the AFL to be involved, they have no idea of what constitutes music good or bad.

Such a silly comment. As if the bombers would change their motto because it represents bombing, As if Collingwood members would know what a cakewalk was but what supporter would change that. As if any demon person could imagine dumping should auld acquaintance be forgot.  These outdated lyrics are the DNA of the supporter preserved by tradition and not the possessions of the AFL corporates.

    What are you talking about?

i think you are losing the plot mate. Your arguements are like Swiss Cheese Dr.

Seriously i am not an old Kevin Bartlett, but i am looking at what the AFL has done and is doing to the game

It is unrecognisable to what i watched 25-30 years ago

The AFL are swimming in money, but most clubs are in debt. You keep telling us this is a good thing.

In 1970 121,000 people rocked up to the Grand Final and you could hear the cheer squads face off at one another from Richmond Station.

As a 7 year old i have never forgotten that noise

Now it’s loud cheap music and betting ads that are so loud

This is definitely true. anyone who went to the football in the 70s for example could suck in fantastic atmosphere. now it's silent before games and subsequent breaks in the game are saturated with noise from the P.A and ground announcers. Peak Football Cometh.

  4. Driving to Traralgon and got one of those pesky call centre calls. I said who is it and the caller said Clayton Oliver. I told him he was doing a great job doing a membership drive and our family were all dedicated Dees. He said awesome. So my prompt renewal is thanks to his yet again good work in heavy traffic.

I agree , However we wouldn't  been able to keep them all because we would have been over the salary cap.

I suppose it should be noted that we also have five good "ins" to replace these discards:  Tyson, Lever, Pedersen, Garlett and Bernie Vince.

What a great tribute to the inter-team rivalry and history. This brings back wonderful memories - it truly does - of Polly Farmer, Bill Goggin and Co. Goggin was the toughest footballer that I ever played against, without doubt. How well-written was this piece of journalism? It is a gem in the football genre.

    Lou Richards with his house-journalist.

  7. Medical science now considers that every incidence of  concussion leads to brain damage. In the long term our code is doomed because courts will eventually spell this out toz sporting administrations. Anyone who saw what Daniel Bell went through would not want to see the likes of Brayshaw and others being exposed to the same thing, in the name of sport.

not sure what your point is here

we all know that certain companies pay big money for the rights

we know they are in the business to make profits

but they have plenty of options......which greatly affect us mug punters

    do they charge a thousand people $418,000 , a million people $418,  2 million people $230 or 3 million people $100....etc etc

do they sell packages i.e. all teams, all games all replays or something less like just your team....etc etc

and then there is all the advertising $s accruing as a result of the rights where the model with most subscribers delivers the most advertising $s

so just saying they are a business who bought the rights and can do what they like is just too simplistic

they can certainly get away with a lot just because they are a monopoly

In the very early days games were broadcast live, at least the last quarter. Grand finals inc. 57 58 and 59 were also broadcast live but went straight to air and were not preserved. I can still (barely) remember the cameras set up behind the goals and filming down the ground. About 1960 the vfl stopped live telecasts because they felt it damaged the gate.

I don't necessarily have a huge issue with there being a white strip but there's two things I don't like:

Firstly our current white strip is without a doubt one of the laziest designs ever, it's like they woke up one morning, looked through their agenda and realised New Balance needed the print that day to create the merchandise and just decided to slap the logo on a white background. For crying out loud Melbourne, get creative and make it a design competition on the website where it's voted by the fans.

Secondly it's the hypocrisy of allowing other clubs to get away with no white clash strip. I can cop the Pies because they are already black and white, and the Eagles don't really clash with anyone else massively with Gold and Royal Blue. But someone like Essendon, tell me how we are different to them? If they have a reverse colour scheme as their clash strip than so should we. There's also the fact that we wear it when we really shouldn't need to. It should ALWAYS be the Red and Blue unless there is a direct clash. It's bad enough we have the stupid thing, but we shouldn't have to wear it unless it's really needed.

Anyway, every year it comes up and every year the same frustrations are aired. And every year the result is the same.

The AFL is diluting the clubs' brand so that they become the brand. Typical Heysenburg.

Lever will probably make the decisive difference between winning and losing a couple of games this season. He'll be a strong contributor in many more.

That's how valuable he can be, as the best young player in the game at a role that is perhaps the most critical single position in our game plan.

He's an absolutely core part of putting us in genuine premiership contention.

He better, cos we've leaked Howe and Frawley in recent times.
