No list, however talented, is ever entitled to a flag. A lot needs to go right on many fronts, and often requires plenty of luck too.
Are you suggesting our list over the last 3 years has been comparable to that of recent dynasty teams? We don't even have a single established, consistent key forward. In no way has our list been that good. Dee's fans tend to overestimate the quality of our list holistically. Our top end talent is as good as it gets, but our middle of the road and below players are what prevents us from having Richmond or Hawthorn type success.Your expectations far outweigh the actual quality of our list.
That all comes down to how much work the playing group was prepared to put in.
there was to much playing off field…. -

We wanted Grundy out. Geelong wanted Stengle out. Gold Coast wanted Chol out. Port Adelaide wanted Teakle out. Gold Coast wanted Bowes out. Hawthorn wanted Mitchell out.
It's not a good argument.
We have paid peanuts to get depth players to complement the strong list we already had. Hawthorn paid a lot of money because they had salary cap to burn due to their terrible performances whilst we had a list with the contracts of Petracca, Oliver, Gawn, May, Lever, Brayshaw, Salem, Langdon etc on it. You're comparing apples with oranges.
But we have bought in Players who are not even depth. When a spot opened up for a Senior game, they were not selected.
That is incredibly poor trading, considering who we let go -

Let's accept for a moment your charitable view that a club source leaked all the material to the media and the Petracca camp had nothing to do with it.
The media reported that Petracca wanted to be traded and his contract was the only thing preventing that, and that he wants to play for "a big club" in front of big crowds.
There was no denial of this by the Petracca camp and there hasn’t been since. If this wasn't his position then the club and Petracca would have been straight on the front foot to deny it, but Petracca's silence was conspicuous and all we ultimately got was the explanation you quoted.
I conclude that the substance of the story is true and who leaked it is less important. If it was the Petracca camp, which must be possible, then that is more damining.
My take is slightly different, I think all the Petracca material was leaked to the Media, for the purpose of putting a Rocket up the Club. For the past 18 months-2 years, there have been problems off field, standards dropping, shall we say
Tracc had had enough, the continued silence was there to reinforce the point that he is dead serious.
Gary Pert’s comments on SEN only made it worse…

Gee, I would never have guessed that you, and some others, thought that. I had no idea that some people considered that we were disappointing in the finals in 22 and 23.
Here an idea: Why don't you, and other likeminded posters, bring it to our attention by mentioning it about 20 times per page on each and every thread on this site? But make sure that you don't mention the losing margins in the finals last year, or the injury list, or the poor kicking for goal by a number of generally reliable players....
Can you stop making excuses please…
You’ve been doing it for weeks now

But how many people have shifted away from FTA? A big number, I'd agree but Rugby League & the AFL still gets millions of eyes watching ... on FTA
There has certainly been a shift and Free-to-air is struggling but it won't die. Not in the near future and certainly not with regards to the 2 big sports in this country
And FTA is paying the NRL & the AFL $Billions for the right to broadcast the games
They are not forking out that sort of money unless they are getting a decent return
My view is that the FTA commercial networks needs live sport more than they ever did. Why else would the the last AFL broadcast deal go for $4.5Billion?
But you won't see the commercial networks clamouring for the A-League in a hurry. Doesn't rate (although, the A-League is on 10Bold on Saturday nights and 5pm Sundays
The main Ch10HD channel will be broadcasting an NBL every Sunday afternoon from 2.30pm (every week) throughout the summer
AFLW gets heaps of live coverage on Ch7. 2 games every Sunday for starters
So there seems to be more live sport on the FTA channels as there ever was
Which can only lead to one conclusion ... that people are still watching FTA TV in large numbers (sports included)
The overseas model paints a different picture but the overseas captive audience is enormous
FTA is dying quite quickly actually
that’s why jobs are shedding weekly
So the next few years will be fascinating
Fans don’t want a Night Granny

Yes, but prime time on weekends would still be a lot more expensive than non prime time slots for the advertisers (on weekends)
Explains why there always seems to be a push for a twilight GF or night GF. It can't be assumed that the push is coming from the AFL
The networks are looking for a larger, captive audience
Rugby League went to the evenings for their GF (Sunday) for the same reasons
Otherwise, if travel for the teams was the main reason, why not just have the game at 2pm instead
As for FTA TV, the NRL & AFL will continue to be in high demand for the commercial networks. They need the 2 big sports to survive
And both the NRL & AFL can't go all cable or streaming or they'd lose a large percentage of their audience. The captive audience just isn't big enough in this country
For instance, on the weekends, people are more likely to be home in the evenings as opposed to during the day. There's local Sport, horse racing, kids sports etc etc on Saturdays and Sundays but mainly before 5pm
Monday to Friday works the same way as most people are at work 9 to 5 (not all, but most)
Having spent 2 years working in the Advertising Department of GTV when Kerry ran the joint, we did a lot of Research into all the things you mention.
But I don’t buy it so much today. People will watch Sports on an iPhone now, so you don’t have to be home at a certain time.I watched last year’s GF on the AFL website Live on the phone, this push for the night timeslot is overrated, as are Fireworks and Halftime entertainment

Prime time advertising rates begins at 5.00pm. At least, that was how it was traditionally
That was the Monday-Friday Scenario
Weekends are on a different time scale.
FTA TV is a shell of itself compared to what it was in the 80’sIt would be fascinating to know what a 30 Second slot is worth now.

The problem with this type of analysis of list management is that the player motives and opposition club enticements are never factored in. It's a very simplistic view that can be summarized as... "Jordan showed signs of being a good AFL player... MFC list management didn't see his worth... Club shipped him out to first buyer that kicked his tyres!" There are many other considerations when it comes to list management in the 'Cap' years! Every other club would have similar stories to tell about the ones that got away as they try to crystal ball future list improvements/team balance. MFC list management has been very good in recent times. It was pivotal in breaking the drought. It has kept us in top four contention up to the final rounds of 2024. That's not to say it has been perfect, but credit where credit is due would make your concerns much more relevant/readable!
Yes, but we replaced them with Casey regulars.
So I consider it a shocking fail as far as list management goes -

2024 Brownlow Medal
in Melbourne Demons
I haven’t watched a Brownlow Count since 1986.
That year Dippa and Greg Williams tied.
Such integrity
Let’s never forget either that R Flower was never bestowed with this shallow award
